The Circadian Rhythm Method

Let's update that pesky Brontë bird, shall we?

"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in
possession of a bloody good job and a nice house (and who also irons), must be in want of a wife/partner/girlfriend/shag/good cuddle/whatever."

Thankfully, now that I'm back in the hectic routine of commuter hell, the lonelies seem to have receded a bit.

Before I expand on that, I feel I must apologise to my dear blogpals for my appalling mood swings over the past week or so.
While they've certainly brought in the old comments - 46 yesterday, 55 the day before - I don't really enjoy bouncing from euphoria to despair every few hours.
And then yesterday, exhaustion hit me … BAM!
I know some people pay good money to experience those effects. Well, they're welcome to 'em. They fuck me up big time.

After two lovely weeks of natural circadian rhythms (groovy), my poor old body is going through the transition shock of getting back into the old "4:40AM leap screaming out of bed/seven hour commute with a full working day in the middle/get home knackered, check my posts and tumble into bed" routine.

The first few days back after a break are always hard and my body gets its revenge by kicking my brain around my skull until I don't know which way is up. Hence the mood swings followed by exhaustion. It's like jet-lag, only nastier.

The one good side-effect of all this is that I now don't have time to get miserable and lonely. It seems that if I keep moving and keep busy, I can keep the lonelies at bay. Depression can't be arsed to catch up with me; it's too much like hard work.

The down side of course, is that loneliness lies in wait, ready to drag me down into despair whenever I so much as stop for a breather. Douglas Adams was right about Sunday afternoons: "The long, dark teatime of the soul" …
I've learned to do my ironing then; around tea time, in front of something funny like a Red Dwarf DVD.

So basically, I've not really got anything to say this morning other than I'm exhausted, but gradually getting back into my routine, and that even with all of your wonderful dating advice over the past week I still don't have a clue about how to find my "wife/partner/girlfriend/shag/good cuddle/whatever."

Hey ho … Same old same old Dive …

That's ok Dive we understand. Yesterday your mood was similar to that of Leo Sayer in Big Brother. I HEAR you groan, Dive, i really do and i apologise for being sucked into the inane madness of it, but well it's a psychological experiment isn't it. It's an educational programme with a scientific base, to see how a bunch of random people interract in a confined space. Rather like on your blog Dive, or mine, or...
Anyway i digress. Leo Sayer suddenly went from a nice chirpy little blokey up for entertaining everyone to a moody, shouty, up himself bastard. This, all after working all night on his own without food though. My point is that you had the same reaction. Overworked and underplayed. We really have to sort this out Dive, the partner thing. My thinking cap is on, yet again...

Thanks, Lynn.
By the way, you've confirmed a decision I made this morning.
As soon as TV switches over to digital, mine's going in the skip. I managed without TV for fifteen years before (and that was in the days of Buffy and Frasier, when TV was occasionally worth watching) and I'm certain I can - and should - do it again.
I can get my news online and watch my movies on my nice widescreen Mac.
Plus, it makes room for more bookshelves.

i agree - it totally blows trying to get back into the swing of work after a wee breakette.

sorry things have been so tough for you. does yer cyber harem not help keep the loneliness away? have you tried online dating? that's the only thing i can think of - short of turning up starkers on yer front door step.

and what's this malarky i hear about ditching the tv? i don't have one at the moment coz i never know how long i'll be here and i wouldn't be able to understand it anyway, but surely there's some good stuff on tv there? *sigh* i miss tv.

hang in there, dive. things can only get better (she sings at the top of her voice...)

Arigato gozaimasu, Gaijin Girl (I've been told that, while I can type kana and kanji on my posts, when I type them into my comments box they don't come out on some computers … hence the crappy old romanji).

My cyber-harem certainly helps, though sometimes they can get a bit out of hand.
As for online dating; the jury is out at the moment, although I did check out the biggest and most reputable site for my area and it consisted of 98 percent sad loser guys with Xena obsessions and one or two desperate fat women.

And believe me, there is NOTHING on British TV worth the effort of switching the bloody thing on.

Dive, we all understand emotional ups and downs on various levels. Don't forget this is your space here, so you can write whatever you want, and you shouldn't be concerned about apologizing for anything. It's no different than inviting us all into your living room. If you spill tea on the rug, well...it's your rug.

The description of the Sunday Afternoon thing is accutely real and evidently universal. If I slow down, I have time to be unhappy, so I keep moving.

Maybe we can reclaim Ironing from the banter of yesterday and make it now a euphemism for holding back depression.

Morning, Robyn (or lunchtime over here).
I don't know about ironing staving off depression. I have to do all of my laundry (as well as cramming everything else in) on my weekends, so that by Sunday afternoon, the ironing pile is not a cheering sight.

Morning Dive...yaaaaaaaaawn...it's now 4:20AM...I set my alarm JUST to get up and come type your comment here cuz I figured you'd be checking in around lunchtime...aren't I psychic? BE NICE! ;)

Please accept my "I'm Sorry DiveyBoy" appologies...never want to step too far outta line...we all got carried away yesterday but ya hafta admit it WAS a little exciting...and Lord knows THIS girl can use some excitement at this point in her life...and that's all I'm gonna say about THAT! LOL!

Just know I'm pretty sure we're doing each other both a little good! ;)

Now let's put it past us...the Lynn&Robyn&Ame&whomever-else-wants-to-jump-in-or-on-here-TEAM is ready to roll! We'll get to the bottom of this assignment if it takes us all...ummm...day? Week? HOWEVER long it TAKES!

Oh, BTW, looks like Hubs & I are planning our trip across that pond of yours for the 17th thru the 25th of February!!! PULLLLLLEASE think about how we can fit you in for a visit...can't not meet up with you NOW can we? The airfare is HALF what it'll be in April so we're taking advantage of the kids' "Winter Week Break" in Feb...

OK, off to toss a load of laundry in the washer...the house never sleeps!

See? I really DO know how to behave myself...right Lynn? Robyn? LOL!

;)

I too watch little tv, but do tend to get sucked into these reality things. I'm not sure what it is, the psychological experiment thing certainly appeals and yes, there is one. Mostly when my tv is on, it's tuned to the news, which i love. I would miss that if i didn't have it. Other than that, i agree with you.
Ironing doesn't do it. Like Dive, i groan at the sight of the pile. Sassy appearing nude on your doorstep might be fun for you i'm sure, but i suspect it's more than that which you crave; a relationship. So unless Sassy has hidden behind her nude self a few large suitcases and a like-minded life-plan promise, i'm not sure it would help you much.
It will happen though. Usually when you expect it least.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

True Ame, we probably behave ourselves 99% of the time, hence the diversion yesterday. In fact, in all sorts of ways we all went a bit AWAL didn't we. Something in the air perhaps...

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

AWOL... sorry

Ame said...

Or AWAR...away with a RABBIT! LOL! Sorry...couldn't resist! ;)

I just checked my diary, Ame.
I can make any day that week other than thursday. I'll try to stop anything urgent coming up, work-wise.
You do realise WHY flights are cheaper at that time of the year?
Bring storm-proof clothing, a team of huskies and a sled, and the means to make a raft.
And expect scowls from the locals when they see your tan.
February is the hardest month to dress for in Britain. We can have a heatwave, snow, torrential rain and floods, storm force winds, fog so thick you can't see your own glasses … and all of that is usually just in one afternoon.
Brace yourselves, and good luck!

And Lynn; You're right of course; it's the old relationship thing that I'm after. If Sassy (or anyone other than perhaps Knudsen) turned up nude on my doorstep, I honestly don't think I'd remember what to do, it's been so long … sigh …

I like the same old Dive.

And isn't that Austen?

GG said...

lynn - just thought i'd better clarify here lest poor sassy be misrepresented. i said i'd turn up nude on dive's doorstep and that was actually in response to a comment he made to me earlier in the week. just so the context is there and sass can keep her kit on. :)

robyn, you are amazing and your comment to dive was one of the nicest things i have ever read.

dive - sorry to be commenting to your commenters on your own blog. it's kinda weird, i feel all subdued being here today. do you think a cyber mood can infiltrate and effect the reader?

Ame said...

Ooooooooooo harsh weather conditions hummmmmmm? Well I'm a seasoned Girl Scout...I come prePARED! And are you kidding? I WISH my Summer tan would have lasted...I'm only tan in the eyes of GIMP & Photoshop! LOL! ;) I'm really gonna start relying on all my DP Family to help me plan this thing! Can't WAIT!!!! ;)

dive said...

Yes, you're right Sassy.
Austen, Bronte … it's all girly-lit.

dive said...

GG: I think you've summed up Robyn perfectly.

Feel free to comment on my commenters (they do it all the while), and I think you're subdued because you're not standing naked on my doorstep.

Ame: I'll have to hurry myself along and come up with a few suggestions on what to do over here (other than shiver and complain, which is the "English Way").

Sassy Sundry said...

I'm not commenting on the nude thing. I'm thinking cleansing thoughts.

Scout said...

Aww, I feel all happy and full of friends--very nice thing to say, GG.

I stopped in here one more time for the morning before I convince myself to get some work done. There is certainly plenty to do.

dive said...

Wasn't that sweet of her, Robyn?

And absolutely true (and she doesn't even know how cute you are yet).

GG said...

i agree robyn, i'm feeling the love too. it's such a shame i have to hit the hay - bloody time difference. this blog is very addictive and i'm riveted by the goings on, which is not to diminish what you're going through, dive me dear. just wanted you to know that i can quite relate to your circumstances - i just like to hide that behind my inane remarks.

eh? i can see how cute robyn is aaand, great smile.

dive said...

Nighty-night, GG …

Shh now, everybody.

dive said...

Woohoo! That's one doozy of a "something to tell you"!

Kate, you're right. Insane working hours are certainly cheaper than drugs if you want massive highs and lows.

They seem to have got the online dating thing sorted in the States (judging by Sassy's experience), but over here, we're still in the "you only date online if you can't get laid any other way" phase.
Bummer …

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

Gaijin Girl, i credited the wrong girl for such an impromptu idea full of action, oops! And yes so Sassy can remain fully clothed while you might or might not be standing naked in front of the anticipating Dive pretty soon? You won't be let in without suitcases though i fear.

Kate, yes, Leo Sayer. It's the Celebrity Big Brother so there are none unknowns. I'll try to recall some others for you in the house at the moment (sorry Dive to contaminate your blog with BB)- a bloke called Dirk from the A Team - i never watched it so don't know him. A bollywood actress called Shilpa, Jade (ex BB contestant and loud mouth) Jade's mother (defies description other than AVOID) Jade's boyfriend (mute) Ken Russell (aged film director) a footballers girlfriend (vacuous; big surprise) Jermaine Jackson (Michael's older brother) Carole journalist someone (interesting. Well she's a journalist; what else am i going to say) girl from s club 7 (nice singing voice shame she's tainted by the girl group) bloke from steps (giggly and silly like a little girl) some rock singer (stoned and abusive but extremely pleasant and interesting when sober). Think that's it.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

..that should be no unknowns. Not none unknowns. Clearly. oops again.
