Just Because

Jeanne Moreau, Miles Davis, Louis Malle …
It's what rainy Saturdays in February are made for.

Enjoy your weekends

500 Words XXVIII - This Week's Sentence

This week's sentence is taken from Boris Pasternak's 'Doctor Zhivago,' with apologies to anyone who gets Lara's Theme stuck in their head for the rest of the day.

The sentence is:
'The hotel staff were being driven frantic; the incident in No.23 was only one more nuisance added to their daily vexations.'

C'mon. You know you can't resist putting some flesh on that one.

500 Words XXVII - Story Time

This week's sentence was taken from Ken Kesey's 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.'

It was:
'Out along the dim six-o'clock street, I saw leafless trees standing, striking the sidewalk there like wooden lightning, concrete split apart where they hit, all in a fenced-in ring.'

First up:

Todd's 'The Rider'

Todd saddles up and heads west for an apocalyptic confrontation.
Put on a Morricone soundtrack album and mosey on over there.

Lulu's 'Meeting'

Yikes! Poor Jarvis is getting himself deeper into trouble.
Delicious and … er … electric.

Dive's 'February'

A bit of a downer this week. Sorry about that. I was having a shitty day, started typing and that's what came out. Hey ho.

Next week's sentence will be up tomorrow. It promises to be more fun.

Meanwhile, Katie's back home and has been making me drool with photos of delicious food she ate on her trip to Thailand and Laos.

As she neglected to photograph the menus, here is a selection from engrish.com for your culinary temptation.

Yum!

WTF Lunedì

'I saw this and thought of you.'

Well gracie molto, il mio fratello.

Phil was in Roma at the weekend for the rugger.
Nestled snugly among the many splendid photos he brought back, showcasing the innumerable cultural highlights of the Eternal City, was this … er … delightful work of art.

Those of us who share the name, if not the impressive musculature or the rather singularly unimpressive genitalia of Michelangelo's masterpiece salute you.

500 Words - XXVII - This Week's Sentence

My, my. You sure had some fun with Louisa May Alcott. Poor woman must be spinning in her grave.
Now it's Ken Kesey's turn. This week's sentence is taken from his glorious 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.'

It is:
'Out along the dim six-o'clock street, I saw leafless trees standing, striking the sidewalk there like wooden lightning, concrete split apart where they hit, all in a fenced-in ring.'

The usual rules apply. Go have some messy fun.

500 Words XXVI - Story Time

This week’s sentence was taken from Louisa May Alcott’s ‘Little Women’.

It was:
‘A pair of silk stockings, that pretty carved fan, and a lovely blue sash.’

Got your coffee? Freshly brewed and oh, so yummy? Got your favourite comfy chair? Okay then, settle in and let us tell you stories …

Katherine's 'Zoology Continued'

Something strange comes to the house of Louisa May Alcott in Katherine's sequel to an equally curious tale.
I do like this trend for expanding existing 500 words stories into chapters of something larger.

Talking of which, here's another one:

Lulu's 'Probing Questions'

Hahahahahahahaha!
Oh me, oh my. If anyone has not yet been laughing uproariously at Lulu's 'Jarvis and Miss Smith' stories, get over there and read them all. The latest is a doozy. This really could become the new X-Files …
… with dimples.

Dive's 'The Fan'

Mac's back (again). In yet another episode (chapter six and counting) of the Bartleby stories we actually get to meet Bartleby. I do love dumb conspiracy theories so I thought it was time I started one of my own.

Next week's sentence tomorrow. Sharpen your quills.

Here's something special: our latecomer this week is co-founder of 500 Words (and very lapsed contributor thanks to all her journalism work of late) Robyn! Yay!

Robyn's 'A House For The Senses'

A beautiful, tender and heartbreaking story from one of our real writers. Wonderful detail and an atmosphere so hushed I almost held my breath reading it.
Lovely.

WTF Monday - Valentine's Special

Yeah, Baby!

Is it just me, or is that rather sweet?

500 Words XXVI - This Week's Sentence

This week’s sentence is taken from Louisa May Alcott’s ‘Little Women’.

It is:
‘A pair of silk stockings, that pretty carved fan, and a lovely blue sash.’

I just know you can make something out of that lot, though I dread to think what Lulu and Jarvis might concoct after the past couple of weeks mayhem of steamy erotica, film noir, space aliens, Godzilla and wild drug abuse.
You certainly get your money's worth with 500 Words.

Enjoy!

500 Words XXV - Story Time

Well, drugs, paranoia and general weirdness were always on the cards this week and you certainly didn't disappoint.

The sentence was taken from: William Burroughs 'Cities Of The Red Night.'
It was:
'He was passing a huge marble snail, a bronze frog and a beaver.'

Skin up, make sure you inhale real deep and let's go tripping:

Katherine's 'Zoology'.

No drugs here, but mystery, paranoia, some pin-sharp observation and a mole rat. What more could a person possibly want?

Lulu's 'Feed Your Head'

Jarvis is back! Waking up after last week's erotic spectacular to find …
Well, find out for yourselves. It's worth it! The Jarvis stories are more addictive than the drugs he's been taking.

Dive's 'What Happens When We Choose'

Er … I really don't know what on earth this is all about, except that I don't want it to happen to me. Sheesh!

Eek!

Yikes!
Things are so busy this week and work is so crappy that I've just this minute realised I've not done the 500 words roundup for this week.
I'll do it later today or tomorrow. I promise.
Sheesh! Busy, busy, busy …

WTF Mmmmmonday

As I am suffering Katie withdrawal symptoms at the moment (she's on vacation, chilling by a pool in Chaing Mai in preparation for invading Laos), here is a WTF Monday gift she gave me.

Yes, you read that right; it's BACON chocolate!

And I must confess it was totally delicious.
Yes, it was chocolate, but yes it DEFINITELY tasted of bacon.

It was GOOOOOOOOOOD!
More, more, more! PLEASE!

Go HERE to buy some.
Thay make an awesome chili chocolate, too.
Proof that the US of A has finally discovered that food does not have to0 be made entirely from crap*. Woohoo!

* About fucking time!

500 Words XXV - This Week's Sentence

A Salinger quote would be too obvious an assignment this week, much as I am tempted. Instead I shall plump for another dead American curmudgeon and take our sentence from William Burroughs 'Cities Of The Red Night.'

The sentence is:
'He was passing a huge marble snail, a bronze frog and a beaver.'

Try to avoid any stories involving not being able to get the toilet seat down, and instead let your oddball imaginations burst forth in unexpected directions, lubricated by the intoxicating and occasionally hallucinogenic creative juices that appear to bubble away inside your skulls.

All the usual rules apply. Yadda yadda.

500 Words XXIV - Story Time

This week's sentence was from George Eliot's 'Middlemarch'

It was:
'I suppose it would be unprofessional,' said Rosamond, dimpling.

I had expected something in the bodice-ripping, historical romance line, but I should have known better with your feverish and - let's face it - totally outrageous imaginations.

Dear readers, you are in for a couple of treats this week. Both Lulu and Vanda have rendered me speechless with admiration and in quite severe pain from laughing too much.

Go on: brew up a coffee and settle in to a comfy chair for a good read.
Enjoy!

Lulu's 'Knowledge'

Woah!
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Holy moly. This is eye-poppingly, jaw-droppingly wonderful.
Where else but '500 Words' could you find a sultry mélange of steamy erotica, film noir, space aliens and Godzilla?
Hysterically funny and astonishingly inventive storytelling from the quite startling imagination of our Lulu.
More, please!

Vanda's 'Lessons'

And my, oh, my, the hilarity continues in Vanda's gloriously outrageous tale of Rosamond's schooldays.
Harry Potter, eat your heart out!
Hermione Granger? Pah!
Vanda, may I please place my order for a first edition of what will surely become the next monster, blockbuster book and movie franchise?
Pure genius!

Last, and definitely least this week:

Dive's ' Incense And Insensibility'

… in which I succumb to the obvious, don my empire line frock and giggle behind my fan.

Ooh! Ooh!
We've got another story rushing in just before the deadline.

Prudence's 'When Things Went Sideways'

Ooooooh! Something (actually Prudence herself) tells me that this may be (or may not be) a non-fiction piece.
Either way it continues Lulu's theme of erotically charged rampant writing.
Excellent, grin-inducing stuff, Pru.

WTF Monday

More disgusting faux food this week.
Phil and myself were in a camping and outdoor shop on Sautrday, buying some thermals for his fishing trips. And there, between the thermal underwear and the hiking boots was this plastic bag full of goo.
Lancashire hot pot is a traditional stew of lamb, onions, potatoes and carrots and is delicious and warming when made fresh in the winter. If you make enough of it you can make it last two days and it is even nicer on the second day.

What you should never do, however, is make up a load of hot pot, then pour it into plastic bags and hang it up beside the thermal underwear in a camping shop. Within a few days you'll have a nice rotting bag of mould and slime.
Whatever is in that bag is NOT Lancashire hot pot but instead some unhealthy chemical concoction of preservatives and God knows what artificial cack and I for one would decidedly not trust the exhortation printed on the front: 'Complete Meal - Ready to Eat - Eat Hot or Cold.'
Rather I would do just what I did on Saturday: blanch in horror and back away slowly.
