On my way out to Sydenham yesterday, I took a detour up Shooters' Hill to the Greenwich Observatory. After three and a half butt-numbing hours on the train a nice walk in the park is as yummy as chocolate.
Unfortunately the weather was arse, so you only get one miserable picture. I'll have to go up there again next spring when there's a decent view. The walk was nice though; freezing but refreshing.
The white building in the foreground is the "Queen's House", designed by the splendid Inigo Jones. Behind that is the Royal Naval College, then the good old Thames, with Canary Wharf in the distance. London is off to the left with Westminster a few miles further upstream. Our office summer ball is usually held on board a river cruiser which takes us down the Thames from Westminster to Greenwich and back. If I get really bored over the holiday I might post some photos from that.
Mister Grinch succeeded in getting me out of yesterday's Christmas party, as well as today's, but I think I'm going to have to develop some kind of tropical disease to escape from the big party on thursday (God, I hate parties) …
There was a splendid "Messiah" live on Radio 3 last night, if anyone caught it. Much better than any stupid party.

Nice picture. The crappy weather adds a nice texture.
So, it's parties in general that put you in a funk, not just Christmas parties? I don't like big planned parties with people I barely know--I stand in the corner and wait for someone to speak to me, then I stand in the corner and wait to go home.
I'm glad I'm not the only one, Robyn.
Um … Probably a good idea if you don't read my next post (currently being written). The Grinch is back and ranty. Skip through to wednesday and I'll try to be nice again.
I'm tough. I can take it. But it's a shame--Utsav just congratulated me on scaring away your Grinch. Well, I did what I could.
hehe--no Freudian slip there, really.
Hee hee.
I think you succeeded in scaring old Grinchy away as I'm still feeling almost festive.
Like any scolded two-year-old, however, he has to have a bit of a shout, so that's the next post.
I've been replaying last night's Messiah this morning on my headphones, and trying not to sing my old tenor parts karaoke style across the office. I'm amazed how much I still remember …
I love this area so thank you for that, arse weather or not.
Didn't have you down as a ball sort of person Dive so i'm surprised at that, but i see you're still avoiding parties. Must say it's not really my favourite thing either. New Year's Eve must be the worst, being kissed or attempted kisses by total strangers, drunk and weaving their beer-dripped mouths through the crowd towards you. Ugh.
Even worse for me I'm afraid, Lynn. I have to stay sober up on stage and watch drunk couples snogging all night. It's a nauseating and embittering experience, believe me.
That is amazing view.
Parties are tough. Although I play a Schmoozer for work, I'm not much of one in real life. I've gotten over some basic shyness, but it's hard for me too.
It's a much nicer view on a clear day when you can see all of London upriver.
And good luck with your new date!
After reading this string of comments, I'm imagining us all in a room together for a party. What an event that would be. Yikes.
Hee hee. All of us standing in separate corners trying not to catch one another's eye.
There would have to be one person talking at least, or pouring drinks. After a cosmopolitan or two, I can talk up a storm.
Hee hee. Maybe I'd go to that party after all.
