Careers Advice

Not yet decided on a direction in life?

Pissed off with your current job?

Hate the idea of actually working for a living?

Simple … Become an Architect. It works for me …

As you know, I am the kind of fool who likes mondays and loves my job. This morning I'm sitting here going "Yippee" and playing in my personal sandbox (and getting paid many a groat for it).

Here's what I'm up to today:
Some of you might remember this nice old Art Deco building (before you fell asleep from boredom last time).
Inevitably, the school have waited until everything's already finished and then changed their brief, so back I go to dick around with the design …

This is technically called "cursing the staircase" and involves regular consultations with Mister Knudsen's Dictionary of Profanity.
When I've done enough dicking around with the actual model, it looks kinda like this …
See? Told you it was easy.

Then I start to put clothes on it. Rough guide colours for when I render it properly.

And there it is finished. Voila!
It really is as easy as that. If you can fall off a log, you can be an Architect.
So come on. Join today!
You can win awards while still being a slacker.
And you get to shout at builders, too. Bonus!

That concludes today's careers advice.
Now I'm off over the road to the Brazilian deli for a cup of blissful coffee heaven … Hey, it's better than work!

I'd like to have gone into this area, Dive, instead of arty paintings, i've done a little technical drawing but not much. Want an assistant?

Funny you should ask …

We have a post coming up in the new year.
Actually, we're always looking, but of 254 applicants for the last vacancy, not one of the Brits even came close to the shortlist. Education here is the pits.
Which is why I work with three Kiwis and a Polish girl …
…and, er, a morris dancer …
Funny old world.

Morris dancer? The application looks like a lot of fun. And you get to dress it up with a sunset and people loitering in the parking lot. Nice.

I'd picture my desktop in the middle of a project, but I think there's something about other publishers stealing cover designs, etc. Publishers can be very secretive about their upcoming lists.

Ah … That brings me back to an old request to see some of your cover artwork, Robyn.
Perhaps some that has already been published and so is not so contentious?

And making skies and sunsets is fun. I use Bryce for that (the same programme I made the maple tree in) and then import them into the 3D rendering engine.
Like I say: better than work. I've done work before and I don't want to go there again …

And Morris is traditional English folk dancing. People tend to poke fun, but it's not really advisable to goad a bunch of heavyset, ale-drinking men armed with big sticks and swords …

That looks like fun. Too bad I suck at things like math.

In that case, I'd be great at it!

Come and sit, one on each knee and I'll show you what to do …
