I lost my sense of smell when I was fifteen.
I'd been rushed to hospital with a burst appendix and a fully functioning pheromonal facility. A couple of weeks of hilarious japes with abdominal drainage tubes later and I left hospital with neither appendix nor sense of smell.
My doctor shrugged his shoulders. Had I been a private patient, he could have made a lot of money from me, but this was the NHS, so his reaction was best summed up by the word "whatever".
Recently, this condition seems to have become fashionable and even has a name (anosmia) and lists of famous anosmics such as William Wordsworth and Michael Hutchens (and somewhat more yummily, Ben Cohen, of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream) have appeared in the papers.
While this condition is classed a disability, we anosmics don't qualify for disability allowance like those scrounging slackers in the blind and deaf communities (smug bastards with their "proper" disabilities, curse their cotton socks).
Apparently, permanent anosmics like old Dive often have a much more developed sense of taste than those sniffy people with real working noses. It's kinda nice for an arty-farty snob like me to have my superior taste officially recognised.
Weirdly, I can still remember smells and that can be a real pain.
I sometimes wake up from a dream (I can still smell in dreams, how freaky is that?) with a smell stuck in my brain that stays there all day. The most annoying "virtual smell" I get stuck with is the smell of washday from when I was a little kid. We had a cold tap and a copper by the range for heating water. The awful smell of damp, soap-powdery clothes in a tiny back room sometimes assails me for days at a time. And oranges … which is a real pisser if I'm hungry.
Some advantages I have over "normally nosed" people:
- I can sit quite happily beside a farting dog and not notice a thing, while the rest of the room runs away, gagging.
- I am a demon at raw chili-eating contests.
- er … that's about it.
Some disadvantages:
- Being unable to smell burning.
- Being unable to smell gas.
- Being shaken awake in the dead of night with a "What's that smell?"
- Having to follow a frantic woman round the house as she tries to locate the "burning smell" or "leaking gas" she is convinced has woken her. And being bawled out for my inability to help.
- Not realising I have a drainage problem until someone visits and reels back, going "What the fuck is that stink?"
- Not realising I've got dogshit on my shoe at work.
- Becoming a fanatically clean person so I don't risk being smelly.
And a couple more:
Having no sense of smell and an enhanced sense of taste, I tend to "taste" smells, but can only pick up on a tiny amount of any smell. And it's usually the wrong part of it …
Ame (and a lot of other people besides) loves Lush products. While I can understand that they might smell very nice to her, all I can pick up on is a horrid taste of washday soap powder and rotting fruit.
And I know a lot of you like perfume …
Well should we ever meet, please, PLEASE don't wear any. It's an effective Dive repellent (maybe I shouldn't have given that away).
Even with the most expensive perfumes, all I can taste is the solvent. Chanel No5 tastes like a petrol/paint-stripper flavour and is the last thing I want to inhale close up.
I'm with the Japanese in finding the neck the most erotic part of a woman. For me, there is nothing nicer than nuzzling into that bit under her ear and inhaling lovely fresh, clean woman. If she's wearing perfume I have to reel away and have (once or twice) been known to involuntarily gag. EWW! That stuff is repellent!
So. That's me and my anosmia.
At least I have better taste than you. Official.

Mmmm … Nuzzle …
EW! You're wearing perfume!
intriguing post, dive. it must be quite interesting living without a sense of smell. dare i ask how your brain registers wonderful pheromones and do they even make an impression? i know pheromone attraction isn't conscious, but in light of your previous posts, it got me thinking.
ok, two more things:
1. neck nuzzling absolutely rocks
2. Becoming a fanatically clean person so I don't risk being smelly is not a disadvantage at all. in fact, this will get you bonus points.
hm, and your label question? i'm a superhero so i'm not supposed to have any disabilities. i do, however, struggle to identify pinks/oranges/reds and blues/greens/greys and a few other combos that i won't bore you with as this comment is already waaay too long. oh, and i'm quite blind, but generally forget to wear my glasses.
I've no idea if pheromones attract me, G.G.
Colourblindness is a bummer, though. My mate Mike The Bike is red/green colourblind, which perhaps explains why his motorbike leathers make him look like he's wearing pizza.
Kate: No perfume since you were twelve? Mmmm … Now that's a neck I'd like to get close to!
As for why I lost my smell; I've no idea. I could probably pay lots of money to find out, but as I'm getting on in years and just sitting here filling in time, waiting for death, there doesn't seem much point.
Yes i'm with you Kate, the neck oh the neck, up a bit, yes just there ooooh! oh but Dive, we are doomed as i am DEF a perfumed lady. I adore the stuff. Jean Paul Gautier, Coco Chanel, Gucci, love it all. I also love being fresh and clean from the shower too though...hmm...a slim possibility. No; i have a mobile phone anyway.
I'm not surprised you have memories of smells though; that's where the word nostalgia comes from. It must be very difficult for you at times Dive but i am cheered by your obsessive cleanliness at least.
I'd dearly love to be able to smell those fragrances, Lynn, especially JPG's as I think he's great.
Keep an eye out when you're between the shower and the perfume bottles. An obsessively clean man might come visiting (hee hee).
Oooh! Gosh. I shall. I could frighten you off though by a few wobbly bits and most definite lady lumps. he he where do we go from here?
Hee hee …
I think we go to London to meet Ame, Lynn.
And the two of you could go into the Lush store at Covent Garden while I writhe about in rotting fruit hell.
OK, several things: Lynn, "wobbly bits" is my new favorite phrase. Was that in Bridget Jones?
Dive, the neck thing really is great. You're a dream. I don't wear perfume anymore because my husband says no matter what I wear, on me it smells like bug spray. True story: we were at the counter at Victoria's Secret, and my husband picked up a sample of a bottle of something he had previously liked. I had previously bought it and had been wearing it for weeks. Husband: did you buy this? Have you been wearing it? Me: Yes. Husband: Oh (scrunched up nose), well, on you it doesn't quite smell the same as the sample.
Oh, and I'm sorry you can't smell the roastedness of your Brazilian coffee shop. I have thought it must be a fastastic place to just sit. On the other hand, having an increased sense of taste is a nice little bonus, no?
Robyn. Husband should be ashamed of himself. Fancy saying that to you good heavens. Do men learn nothing about women? Wobbly bits i don't know if Bridget said it, i claim it as all mine, but then being a journalist, i would wouldn't i. I love the BJ films. Not so much the books though, strangely. Visually it's hilarious.
Dive well then LONDON it is. Don't know Lush at all. I could always arrive straight from the shower, collect a neck nuzzle then pop to the ladies to swathe myself in JPG so that i feel dressed and feminine?
Good morning, Robyn.
I would have a gripe about your lovely smiling face disappearing from your comments, but the cutest picture of the cutest girl ever kind of makes up for it.
Men and perfume never mix. Not that my malfunctioning nostrils could ever tell, but I would have thought any perfume would smell much nicer on a woman than just as a sample.
Oh, and coffee - like red wine - is very much an inhaling thing. Unlike perfume, the greater part of the scent is picked up in the roof of the mouth, so I don't lose out on either of those fantastic things.
As for sitting in the Brazilian deli; thye still allow smoking, so I never hang around, and for ten months of the year it's too cold to sit outside in Britain (and the other two months it rains).
The increased taste is great for things that aren't smelly. For instance the flavour of steamed runner beans or courgettes is fantastic compared to when I had smell. Mmmm …
Tee hee, Lynn. Perhaps just dress in JPG (I've always wanted one of his non-tartan kilts, myself).
Kate: Yikes! That's nasty. You poor thing.
I'll have to make the neck thing nice and realxing.
I came back because I forgot to name my disability. The only thing I can think of is the occasional slipped disc. But then, I can flare my nostrils at will, so I guess it all balances out.
Oh, and the wobbly bits. I remember a scene when BJ jumps out of bed and hides under a sheet while she dresses. She tells the boyfriend it's so he won't see her wobbly parts, and he says, "but I love your wobbly parts." How nice.
Nostril flaring! I suppose no photo will be forthcoming, Robyn?
And I've never seen or read BJ, but can attest that men will say ANYTHING to make a woman feel nice (ulterior motive, of course).
YOU don't though Dive! You gave us well over a page and a half about the things you hate about us all! he he
Well anyway my neck's firmly taken and often! Appreciated as it is bathed in perfume, it's just great that way.
A kilt doesn't do it for me on men in any case, sorry. lol.
Ah, we like a bit of a breeze. Just ask our be-kilted old friend.
And as you well know, Lynn. Old Dive is no threat, so don't feel you have to overdo the parfum to keep me off.
Dive the vampire. Dig it. Neck nuzzling is the best. I can't say as I care for Lush much. We have a store here, and I can always taste the store before I really smell anything. Ick.
It's funny, you mentioned your anosmia once in my comments, and I wondered if you could taste anything. Guess you can.
Let's hope that you don't have anything else in common with Michael Hutchens. THAT would be a disability.
Let's see. What's my disability... I have so many.... Ah, here's an easy one. I can't see for shit without my glasses or contacts. I don't have super hearing powers because of it, but I am a damn fine eavesdropper.
I wish I was as sexy as Hutchens was. But no, I'm not into auto-erotic asphyxiation.
And I like a woman with poor eyesight, Sassy. Gives me a fighting chance of a date with 'em.
As for taste, I'm just back from the Japan Centre in Piccadilly, grabbing a couple of big bags of stuff for the kids in Japanese class. And they are doing yummy hot miso (not like the crap they push in some coffee / sandwich shops; the full on Japanese silky wakame heaven). And hot steaming sticky rice straight out of the steamer, ladled into my teryaki tuna bento box.
My overexcitable taste buds love me, big time. Oh, and some scrumptious kelp and pickled plum onigiri for the train ride home.
Happy, happy Dive.
Yum!
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn...I really hate missing the party like this...GEEEEEZ! And I can't believe Lynn mentions her seedy "BJ" films and no one BITES! Hmmmmmmmmmm...
DB, anything else you really miss smelling? ;)
Tee hee, Ame!
Remember, I was only a kid when I lost my sense of smell, so I've no idea what any "grown-up" rudey stuff smells like (probably just as well).
DIVEY BOY! Get that mind up outta the Westminster Bridge Street Road Avenue Expressway GUTTER! I was thinking about food...or nature or animals for Heaven's sake!
But now that you mention it, your ass-know-me-yeah explains it ALL! You missed out on the foundation smell of human existance...locker rooms!
Off to add neck-guzzling...I mean NUZZLING to my Do-London list!
;) HI KATE! HI GG! HI LYNN! HI ROBYN! HI SASSY! xo
I don't miss many smells, Ame, though I get really pissed off when I sniff roses and can't smell a damned thing. I used to love that smell and I can't get a memory fix on it anymore.
One of my all time favourite "air flavours" though, is when I've just dry-fried a load of spices - coriander, cumin, fenugreek, star anise and whatever else I fancy - and then I tip 'em all into my big old iron mortar and pound the shit out of 'em down on the kitchen floor while they're still red hot. The aroma sends my taste buds straight to Heaven. Wowee!
Hey! Sounds like my Mother-In-Law...always pounding away with her mortar and pestle! It's such a fun back-to-the-old-country (she's from Indonesia) technique to watch...but Holy Moley, it DOES get your nose...if your body's even THINKING about bringing on a stuffy nose sinusy thingy that will clear it RIGHT up! ;)
Ever eaten a habanero chili right off the bush?
Take my advice and DON'T! I had to call the paramedics on my Brother-in-law after he tried and ultimately thought he was having a heart attack! Not funny THEN!
LOL about it all the time NOW! ;)
Have your docs ever tried you on a maintenance dose of any kind of steroid? Cures a lot of anosmia cases over here!
HUGS! ;)
I don't like pills of any kind, Ame. I'd rather have anosmia than take steroids.
And my record is sixteen straight Scotch Bonnet chilis, raw and bleeding. I'm incredibly chili-tolerant, which makes me (so far) unbeatable at raw chili eating contests.
And for anyone else. Do not! EVER! put a raw Scotch Bonnet in your mouth! Let alone chew the fucker up and reach for more. It takes a strange metabolism like mine and a kind of insanity to do that. And after a while your eyeballs start to bleed.
And check out the comments box of my December 8 post ("Coffee Machines! Aargh!") for my strange obsession with pestle and mortars.
I KNEW you would be the one to bite the BJ Ame, i just knew it. Passed the rest of them by but you came along and BAM.
Disabilities well nothing serious but like Sassy i don't see much in the distance without my specs. Not too good with heights, i could easily fall just changing a light bulb in the centre of a room.
Changing lightbulbs? That's what men are for, Lynn (in case you were still trying to figure out what we're any good for).
If I were to choose, I suppose I would rather not have my sense of smell opposed to my sense of taste. Being a proficient cook I would be lost without the ability to taste. I am with ya Dive, you can smell flavors and the upside of not having a working proboscis are as stated. Plus a myriad of others. The “Bad Catering” that you have to suffer at your office is brought to mind. You don’t eat it because it’s horrible and you are saved from having to smell it.
I seldom wear perfume, as it is a luxury to a single mom of 3. I find a clean-showered smell more erotic than cologne anytime. Being unable to smell a gas leak (of the deadly kind) is a bit alarming. I wonder if there are natural gas detectors that would solve that problem?
As far as disabilities, having ginormous “ta-tas” makes it difficult to do a lot of things. Running, sleeping on your stomach, crossing your arms, never mind finding shirts that fit properly. Also never being looked in the eye by the opposite sex. Add to that I am almost 6 feet tall, the average guy around these parts are usually about eye level with those puppies anyway.
Being tall is also somewhat of a disability especially in the dating arena. It is funny that men say they don’t have a problem with a woman being taller than they are. The usual comment is “well it doesn’t make such a difference if you’re horizontal.” That’s a load of crap. Face to face, horizontally, my navel would get a lot of action! Although I am a modern woman in many ways, I want my man to be the big protector and make me feel at least, bit dainty. It makes dating even harder than it already is. Compact cars, you forget about it. It is hard to drive with your knees up by your earlobes. Not being able to wear pretty shoe because when you do you are then 6’3”. Talk about really sticking out in a crowd. In high school it was at its worst. None of the really “good” guys wanted to date because I towered over them and that left only those who wanted a date in hope of copping a feel of your “lady lumps” as aptly put this morning by Lynn.
Talking of which, head over to Old K's Fake Old Man Balls.
that was meant for Ame, but i'm sure Old K will make anyone else very welcome.
Thanks for the warning, Lynn. I won't be going there from here today.
Yetta may be tall. She's also fabulous.
Personally I hate not being taken seriously because I'm shorter than most.
Thanks Sassy, I love you being just the way you are too!
Lynn...;)
hmmm no sense of smell. So that explains why you don't pick up on a womans pheromones when they are reseased when you're around. That's the first attraction you know divey boy.
But look on the bright side you can taste what most men wouldn't.
I am almost deaf in one ear. sometimes it sucks but other times it works to my advantage.
Like jewelry, perfume is something i love but haven't got the habit of wearing, for the simple reason that I can't remember to put it on. still, It must be nice for a girl to not have to worry about farting, I dare say the sounds can be a lot more enjoyable if unaccompanied by the stench. Of course I'll be dropping in to keep reading you while in retirement. All I ask is you spare me a kind thought every now in then in that busy head of yours.
I ought to mention that quite unlike you, I have hyper sensitive smelling ability. I can smell what my roomies been drinking from a hundred paces.
Ame...;)
Hi Prudence.
If they made a natural gas detector it would be no good to me. Remember, I'm a single man and mostly veggie so my duvet floats a few inches from the ceiling.
Clean, showered smell is indeed far more erotic than unnaturally perfumed.
Ah, the old tall woman problem. I think if a man's confident in himself, he'll definitely date a tall woman. It's the dickless wonders who need a strap-on Porsche who are afraid (with good reason). And never mind "dainty"; tall women are "elegant", and the fact that they have wonderfully long legs does all sorts of things to me … er …
And Sassy; I spent many years with a four foot ten woman and loved every minute of it, so small is no problem either.
I know how the ear thing can be an advantage, Rich. My left ear's shot from too many years standing in front of Marshall stacks (well not so much standing as posing and leaping about, but that was then …).
And Taihae; really glad to know you'll still be popping in during your hiatus. Someone as hot as you doesn't need perfume, by the way. And as for farting, I'm with Fat Bastard on that "We all love our own flavour" Hee hee …
Your super "booze" smell sounds great. I compensate (even with only one and a half ears) by being able to hear a bottle being opened across a crowded gig.
Lynn and Ame: you two are incorrigible.
True about long legs. They have the abilty to completly wrap around things, giggle , giggle!
P.S. Dive my blog is about you today!
Wow! Thank you. That's so sweet of you Prudence.
You are a fantastic gardener. And the BBQ and wine sounds oh, so tempting (though not at this time of year).
You are welcome Dive. It would be difficult to see them now for sure!
I guess we are Dive, yes.
Changing lightbulbs, putting the rubbish out, oil & water in the car, taking the hoover to bits, all so called man jobs but along with the lady jobs, there's just me to do them all i'm afraid (cue violins) as best i can.
You're forgetting the main "man job".
Slouching in front of the TV watching the rugby with a beer.
Yes, thankfully i don't have to do that one. I merely bring in the beer.
No-one's mentioned the best thing (for the rest of us) about Dives lack of olfactory acuteness - when you're visiting him, you can take your shoes off and not have to worry about how long you've been wearing them (unless Taihae is in the room too, it seems...)
Or those super-sexy boots of yours!
Dive,
Not sure when this one was put on but I'm always late in any case (something to do with being at the bottom of the world) but thought I'd add something: You can TASTE the old fashioned smell of roses if you buy genuine Turkish Delight from a market (not the one coated in chocolate) - the flavour comes from rose petals!!
As for disabilities - too many to mention!!!
And perfume - I'm with Lynn I'm afraid but I only wear the same scent so as to not confuse anyone - YSL Opium - have been wearing it since I was 22 and before one could buy it in Australia (banned because of the name). No complaints from M.B so far ...
