What?

A long, long time ago I bought a house on the coast.
There was an elderly lady living next door and the first day I was there she leaned over the fence and introduced herself as Daphne Rubbernoids.

Daphne made great marmalade; really strong and bitter. And she sang - rather well - with the local Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

I lived there for over two years and got on really well with old Daphne, but being terribly "English", I never did ask her if I'd heard her last name right.

After I'd moved out I discovered her name was Ellis.

I don't even know why I'm relating this somewhat pointless tale except that the memory of Daphne Rubbernoids just ambushed me by the water cooler and forced its way into my head.

And now it's in yours, too …

Rubbernoids vs. Ellis?

You "English" people must be something else.

was she married to Phil Mcraken or Lester Lipshits?

LOL! Certainly is! When i first started to read i thought we'd regressed to lyric reminiscing again, a la Don McLean. A long, long time ago... american pie etc.
Anyway. Rubbernoids? Dive you silly thing. What on earth did she say to you? Nobody but nobody is called fucking Rubbernoids (yes Lynn said fuck)! Oh,,, still laughing.... what a great memory. More watercooler moments please.

I kind of like having the image of Daphne Ellis Rubbernoids in my head. She would make a great character in a book--hey, maybe she could be the lady on the scooter with the cat and the knitting--solving mysteries and delivering mail.

Hee hee to you all.
I think what she must have said is "My name's Daphne", then followed it with some sort of mumbled greeting.
Anyway, it registered in my head as Rubbernoids.
Hence, every neighbour I've had since (male or female) is known within the family as Mrs. Rubbernoids.

Thanks, Lynn.
I just got the old Martin out and discovered that not only can I still play it, but I still know every word to American Pie …

That's either very cool or very sad, depending on your age.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

Well i reckon it's cool, Dive.

I also reckon she said her name then told you sharply "and enough noise!"

Hee hee.

What are Rubbernoids, exactly?

M.Benaut said...

Dive,
I used to know her as well but she introduced herself as Daphne von Trapp. Thereafter, all I could hear when I thought of her was "How do you solve a problem like Maria" !!!
She didn't look anything like Julie Andrews or Bo Derick, for that matter.
The other crowd that bother my mind during the hours of sleep are Leroy and Elroy McElroy and young Earl. They are so persistant that we have named our garden magpies after them.
And Sassy, rubbernoids are rubber haemahroids, the spelling of which is quite impossible !

M.Benaut said...

And Dive,
I am constantly challenged by your quizzzes, monsieur.
Perhaps it was John Fitzgerald Kennedy who dun them things to Annette Funicello ? I won't sleep until you provide me with another clue or put me out of my miz.

dive said...

Sadly not, MB.
I can reveal that it was Linus Van Pelt in Peanuts who let rip with the immortal wail of anguish: "Annette Funicello has grown up!"

Rubbernoids? I'm going to have that word in my head all day now. Goes with the picure on Knudsens blog.
And its commendable that you still remember every word to american pie, as long as your not waltzing around your house in a tiara singing it like madonna.

M.Benaut said...

DIVE,
YOU MORON YOU!! just joking.
That's MY tiara and I won it fair and square on your blog recently when I got Knighted by Her Majesty after winning your quiz. AND I met Camilla. If you think you can just wear it willy nilly, I'll send Ame over to Straighten things out and take YOU in hand. I don't mind you singing like Madonna, but fair's fair mate. You CAN, however wear it on June 2nd, because that's the anniversary of our Blessed Majesty's coronation in Westminster Abbey in 1953. On that occasion, as you no doubt remember well, she said, "I declare before you all, that my whole life whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to the welfare of our great imperial family". Now you've got me fired up and you lot have feet of beautiful snow. Bugger !!!

Hee hee, MB.
The tiara is all yours (Kate, what have you started?).
And you must know by now about my loving relationship with our parasitical "rulers".
Disenfranchise the whole filthy mob, drag 'em off to Yekaterinburg, stuff 'em in a cellar and shoot 'em (Lynn will go all Daily Mail on me for that, but I think it's fair to say we agree to differ on the subject).
When I feel celebratory, I'm more likely to don a Che beret and a "Hands Off Cuba You Yankee Motherfuckers" teeshirt than a tiara.
And it's Rich who sings like Madonna!
Heh heh … A rant before breakfast is most refreshing.

lol M. Benaut: haemorrhoids.

Dive, yes we do agree to differ and are all the fonder for it therefore i shall leave it alone (this time, but only because i'm weak with flu).

Sassy. This little known word Rubbernoids is a building term. Short plugs of around 2" in length, they are of course made of rubber and usually red, they are used to fill holes in drainage systems, specifically the section of the down pipe which joins the twin barber, easing the flow of sewage.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

There's a little more added to the train journey, Dive, now at www.underatrain.blogspot.com well i didn't think you'd mind if i plugged, seeing as it's topical.

dive said...

Yikes! Not bird flu, Lynn?

Whatever type it is, I hope you're soon over it and feeling well enough to bait me with royalty again.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

No i reckon i'm okay there, though i suppose it IS bird flu as i'm a bird, but... no it's in your area isn't it. Bit scary all that. Are you off chicken and turkey? I'm going that way. Bernard Matthews isn't quite so bootiful now is he - maybe it's all over for him?

dive said...

I never eat chicken or turkey, Lynn.
But I do live in the Restriction Zone and have a long letter from the council advising me not to move any birds I might own.
It also says that - as long as I wash my hands and kitchen surfaces - I can eat chicken and turkey.
Eww …
I'll pass on that.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

Yes i don't blame you. Sounds like wishful thinking on not having massive losses to me. I wouldn't trust it. Eeeewwww. Must check with my parents actually, they've not mentioned a Council letter.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO, my head's swelling with this thread (that didn't sound right at ALL after I reread it)...better see my shrink! Naaaah, on second thought, he's just a big arsehole...guess I better butt outta here before I get banned...or worse yet, spanked and sent to my ROOM! ;)

Sorry DB...don't know what's taken over my brain today...perhaps a good Sapporo, some miso soup and a plate full of inari sushi will help!

dive said...

Mmmmm …

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

I reckon i should sign up immediately for Call My Bluff. No-one challenged my building term at all!

dive said...

Hee hee, Lynn.
I've not watched that since the days of Frank Muir (with his "sunset over Penge" bow tie) and P…P…P…Patrick C…Campbell. What a great show it was.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

Wasn't it, Dive. Now that was tv. Goodness we're sounding a little, just a bit, mind, ... old. Gah!
