Don't Try This At Home

My marvellous "very personal secretary", Ms. Gaijin Girl has suggested I start a regular post called "Dive's Extreme Eating" after last night's shennanigans with a bar of chocolate and a tube of wasabi paste (hey, you do what you want with your "very personal secretary" and I'll do what I want with mine) …

As I have previously posted on other inadvisable things I have put in my mouth (check out the link to "Eating Endangered Species" posts at the bottom of my sidebar … Not you, Kate!) … I felt I would share this one with you, too.

Last night, I simply smeared wasabi paste on some chocolate and stuck it in my mouth. The wasabi hit first, which was nice, but then the chocolate started to melt and …
Well … Let's just say that was something I vowed never to repeat …

Until this lunchtime, that is …
I decided to vary the experiment. Follow this recipe if you are clinically insane:

These are the basic ingredients:
1 bar of Green and Black's Organic Dark Chocolate.
1 tube of wasabi paste.

To avoid the kind of time-lapse taste explosions of last night I decided to let a piece of the chocolate dissolve on my tongue first, and only then follow it with a further - and larger - piece, liberally dosed with wasabi paste.

Take it from one who knows …
This is something only an imbecile would try once.
Only my love for my fellow bloggers and the interests of culinary science induced me to repeat the excercise.

What I WILL say is this:
The aftertaste is fucking AMAZING!
The taste itself is, however, decidedly not.
Suffice to say, wasabi paste on dark chocolate is probably the most unpleasant thing I have ever had in my mouth (and believe me; a whole lot of strange things have passed that way).

So this is the first in what will be an occasional series of Dive's Extreme Eating. Starring Dive and his lovely assistant, GG.
Coming soon to a cable channel near you.

Well no WONDER it was disgusting...you were using ORGANIC chocolate...that's just WRONG! Probably meant there was absolutely NO chocolate IN it! So you were merely tasting wasabi and WAX!

Eeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwww...why am I thinking about RICH! ;)

Think you should call it "Dive put WHAT in his MOUTH?"

Think you MUM would approve?
=)))))

52 hours and 69 seconds!

And do I REALLY have to PACK? Can't I just come shop and buy everything I need over THERE?

;/

You certainly can, Ame.
But I'm still waiting for that list so I know where to meet you, where to take you and what to do with you when we get there … er … that didn't quite come out as I intended.

Oooooooooooooh, THAT list...will get right ON it...have to consult the other half...sigh~ so many things to DO! Now let me see, where DID i PUT him? ;)

I think you should just tell us what to do and see!

But then again, I might be putting my life in danger...what with falling bodies and rafters and spires and all!

;)

We really haven't tossed around anything other than Tower Bridge, Westminster whatever, Royal Stuff, the Tate...Jewels...the Eye (does it really have a red nose on each car?)

Your dedication to your fellow bloggers is Emmy-worthy already, and the season has only kicked off. What a triumphant start to Dive's Extreme Eating. Japanese stations would totally be into picking up the show, except they actually do their own version of extreme eating in their everyday lives.
And those shennanigans? Baby, you made me burn. I'm Green and Black all over.

I read the squid thing. Did I rant? I come from a country where we eat our national symbols.
You actually tried this?
We so have to find you a girl.

p.s - i don't think all japanese people are evil, just ones with harpoons.

Back to the choolate issue, perhaps you should try it with a variety of different chcoolate, and have an ambulance standing by.

Well, Dive, if nothing else, you are persistent in your pursuits. I will look forward to the next installment in the series.

In the culinary world, hot and sweet are often mixed together with amazing, favorable results. Had I been there with ya Dive, I would have taken that leap too! However, I don't have to now that you have. I will put my thinking cap on and see if I can come up with any other extreme eat possibilities, keeping in mind your Vegan-Health Food roots.

Mmm, Prudence.
You have yet to try my astonishingly fabulous home-made dark chocolate and chili ice cream.
I'm drooling just thinking of it.

And as for you, GG: we'll have to do that again some time very soon!

Chocolate and chilies go great together. I'm just not so sure about giant gobs of wasabi.

dive said...

And you are SO right to be afraid, Sassy.

Ame said...

So Divey...what ARE two of your FAVE flavors...and keep this G-rated for your young viewers! ;)

Hey You! Do you have a private email so I can throw all my "WhoHowWhatWhereWhy" questions your way and not bore everyone here? ;)

Click on my page and I think my email link is there!

Fresh Madagascan vanilla pods, Ame, and that bit where onions, garlic, fresh herbs and tomatoes are frying off together and it just fills the kitchen.
Mmmmm …
Sorry it was so free of rudery.

as for Monday; I shall be getting in to Liverpool Street Station sometime before 8:30. From there, I'll go get breakfast. I'll be in London all day, so just name a time and I'll meet you in your hotel lobby.
Oh, better remind me of the name and address to save my poor old broadband from searchin through our old comments.

DIVE! WHERE ARE YOU!

Do you think we need an electrical adapter for the outlet to plug in the power cord for the laptop?? (got that?) In other words, do our plug prongs fit your holes? BEHAVE!

This forum thread has now evolved into Ame-Asks-Dive-Answers! LOL! ;)

Guess he's reserved his private email for dodgy surreptitious Japanese feely bar opportunities!

A man's gotta eat dinner at some point in his life.

Yes, the hotel will have that type of thing, but you can also pick 'em up in airports. Three prong, 240V AC.

Chocolate and wasabi? Why?

Is this what happens to a man who suddenly doesn't have a 7 hour commute every day?

dive said...

Spinny, it was from Gaijin Girl's post about Valentine's Day in Japan.
Apparently they really DO have wasabi chocolates!

Pushing the boundaries of culinary sensibilities! I think you just picked the worst combination imaginable. If you can top it for the next installment, you're doing well (or you're insane).
