Excellent post over at the Lakes today.
Dear Prudence challenges us:
"Here is the assignment, list five lyrics that stick out in your mind and their significance to you. It can be as zany, quirky or catchy to having had an influence or impact on some aspect of your life."
This is a real toughie, as my list of favourite lyrics runs to several hundred pages. Just about all of Dylan, Joni, John Hiatt, The Handsome Family, Zappa, Tom Waits … well, everyone on my profile page …
1: I'll start with Joni.
As I can't really write out ALL the lyrics to her "Blue" and "Hejira" albums, I'll stick to a couple of snippets from "Hejira" itself:
"There's comfort in melancholy
When there's no need to explain
It's just as natural as the weather
In this moody sky today …
… I Know - No-one's gonna show me everything
We all come and go unknown
Each so deep and superficial
between the forceps and the stone.
Well I looked at the granite markers
Those tributes to finality - to eternity
And then I looked at myself here
Chicken-scratching for my immortality."
Story of my life. Nuff said.
2: A complete change of mood.
The incomparable Bongwater, with Ann Magnusson going off on one as she does. This is the start of "Chicken Pussy", from the album "The Power Of Pussy".
"I'm in a one-room apartment located in the basement under the Polish National Church.
It used to be a club.
And then, a mental health outpatient clinic.
Now I call it home.
There's a king-size mattress in the middle of the room where me and the big fat lead singer from Canned Heat finish up an afternoon of incredibly hot sex.
Boy … Does he have a big one!
Joining us for late afternoon tea and a four-way is my old next-door neighbour Jimbo and his wife, who is a chicken.
As I'm the only woman there with hands, I soon find myself fully occupied.
I can't help but wonder how Jimbo and his wife had their baby, who had been sleeping next to us but had since fallen onto the floor.
She must be able to change forms back and forth … and what about chicken pussy?
Is it enticing?
I mean, what's the story?"
Just go buy it. There's no significance to my life there except that it makes me laugh.
3: Dylan …
Holy crap! Where do I start?
Okay. Sadboy Dive has every album, bootleg and demo known to Dylankind (at least up to Street Legal … after that he just wasn't Dylan anymore). But choosing a favourite? Bugger all round that.
Let's just settle on the first verse of "Highway 61 Revisited".
"God says to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on!"
God say, "No." … Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but …
The next time you see me comin', you better run!"
Well Abe says, "Where d'you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61."
Heh-heh … Reminds me of all the arguments and abuse me and God hurled at one another before we stalked off in opposite directions.
4: Hokay. Time for a Paul Simon one.
The first verse of "Jonah", from "One Trick Pony".
"Half an hour to change my strings and tune up.
Sizing the room up.
Checking the bar.
Local girls, unspoken conversations.
Misinformation …
Plays guitar."
It doesn't matter if I'm playing to twenty-five thousand people or twenty-five. It's like that every single time.
5: God! This is SO FRUSTRATING, Prudence!
Only FIVE? I want to list ten thousand!
I wanted so much to put Tom Waits' "Burma Shave" here, but it just got pipped at the post by a couple of snippets from REM's "Nightswimming", off "Automatic For The People".
"The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it's so much clearer …
You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
this one laughing quietly underneath my breath.
The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder."
It went curly at the edges. Then it faded. But it was there for a long, long time.
So there you go.
Five from Dive.
Thank you, Prudence for a doozy of a challenge.
The rest of you (other than Sassy, who's already done it), go to it.

Ok, I've done PRUDENCE's music challenge and RICH's poetry thing.
Now will someone write my 3000 word assignment they hit me with yesterday at school????
Please?
I've come to the conclusion I'm never finish school at this rate.
But great song choices dive.
xox
Finish? You've only just started!
hee hee. Sorry, Kate, but I've got my own Japanese homework to do for tonight.
What can I say, i'm impatient.
I'll have to think about this for a while because the lyrics in my head are in bits and pieces, and I have already posted my actual singing of them.
Anyway, it was Rich, I believe, who posted the lyrics to Nightswimming in my comment box at some point. And I think I posted a YouTube of it. Interesting. Chicken Pussy? My, you do have electic tastes.
I did the tag! I did the tag!
These are great. They put mine to shame. Love them.
Hee hee, Robyn, Bongwater, eclectic? I love it.
And Sassy; they do not put yours to shame, but I'll admit, they're pretty good songs.
Nice call with Nightswimming. My fave line is the first - "deserves a quiet night"
You push me to go find new music, Dive. I haven't heard of Bongwater before, but I'm off to google to find out what I can.
OK, it's done, but my list is not nearly as cool and of this decade as everyone else's.
Love it, Vic.
"A quiet night." from a girl who plays guitar, bass and drums! Hee hee.
Bongwater are fun. "Pussy" is probably their most commercial album. They're kind of psychedelia mixed with samples and general weirdness.
And Robyn, you have been busy this morning.
I'm now on my way over to check it out (and mine had NOTHING from this decade) …
Great Lyrics Dive. Because of you, in a past post, I downloaded Chicken Pussy. It makes me giggle too! I do understand about listing a zillion lyrics. It is difficult to choose only five especially if you spend a lot of time listening to music. Thanks for joining!
There I was talking about a thought-provoking lyric...
But it's less than a quiet night. Traditional muso thursday big night (gigging friday)...
I've taken the limewire jump and I'm going to try bongwater out if I can find them... I'll either love it or complain that my head hurts.
I couldn't begin to narrow down a top five bits of lyrics. there are so many that resonate with me. For instance... Hit Me Baby One More Time... brilliant. How does one even get past the Britney catalogue?
Seriously, I could maybe do this by genre from show tunes to thrash metal, folk to opera and everything in between. And don't get me started on mariachi to rancheros. There's just too much...
I know just what you mean, FH. There were a good ten thousand songs I wanted to put down, but Prudence is a strict mistress, so five it is!
And Prudence. Well done for actually downloading something as uncommercial as Bongwater! Thanks for a really excellent assignment.
Vic. Your head will hurt. And have a great gig tomorrow. Wish I was there (not just because of the chance to see you play, though I'd LOVE that; it's just pelting down with snow here and I'd rather be in summery Oz).
Oh Dive, you mentioned Zappa.. another giggle tune..Dynah Moe Hum...funniest freakn tune. Prince also belts a good one called Pussy Control off his Crystal Ball CD
P.S.
Everyone needs a firm hand now and again!
Will my head hurt because of
1) the wine
or
2) the music of bongwater? (that's a great stoner reference, if only I was into that scene)
The gig will be crap, but I'd like tha money. And yeah, the weather's great. We'll finish at 2am and I'll still be wearing a T-Shirt outside. (Aus isn't all summer, though. I'm just rubbing it now.)
Oops! Sorry about the "strict mistress" bit, Prudence.
Yup; the Prince track is cool, and just about anything Zappa did gets my vote, even totally offensive stuff like Jewish Princess ("with a couple of sisters who could raise a few blisters") and He's So Gay (I don't remember it off hand, but it goes something like "His evening's not complete without some meat inside his seat") The man was awesome.
And thanks for rubbing it in, Vic (there's a bizarre reference for those who are old enough). I've just been trudging through the blizzard to the village shop, all muffled up in Goretex and fleece. Brrr …
Well I just read my last comment and realised the implication. We should trade email sometime when it isn't half past one with a bottle of wine down.
Hee hee.
Put that bottle down and crawl off to bed. You've got a gig tomorrow.
And stop rubbing it …
I won't be putting this on my blog but i'll do it here if that's ok Dive. One of the most beautiful i think is Vincent, by Don McLean.
ARTIST: Don McLean
TITLE: Vincent
Lyrics and Chords
Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
/ G - / Am - / C / D7 G /
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land
{Refrain}
Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now
/ Am D7 / G Em / Am7 D7 / Em / A7 / Am7D7 G - /
Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand
{Refrain}
For they could not love you
But still, your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night
You took your life as lovers often do
But I could've told you, Vincent
This world was never meant
For one as beautiful as you
/ Am7 D7 / G Em / Am7 Cm6 / GF7 E7 / Am7 C / D7 G /
Starry, Starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in ragged clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will
Oooh yes please Kate, i'm afraid i'm a real swot (adjusts glasses).
It means a lot to me, that song, as Van Gogh is one of my favourite painters who led such a sad life.
Nice one, Lynn. I love Vincent (although I play a slightly jazzier version in open D tuning … kinda Martin Taylor style, though I developed that version when he was still in short pants)
Done it.
Next!
"Eidelweiss"?
"EIDELWEISS, Betty?"
Moving to Montana soon....
Gonna be a dental floss tycoon.
Oooh! Nice one, Sassy!
Let's all talk Frankspeak!
"I'm only interested in two things, and thats Titties and Beer."
Er … maybe we'd better not go down that particular road.
Oh what have I started! We could always do a "Naughty Lyrically Speaking". We could start with Denise LaSalle, "Lick it before you stick it" or "Bone it like you own it".. ok, I'll stop.
Nice choice Lynn. I also like Josh Grobans version strictly because of his voice, not so much the arrangement.
Don't eat the yellow snow.
Hee hee.
Before this gets out of hand, I'm going to hitch up my dog sled and disappear (avoiding the yellow snow) to Japanese class.
Sayonnara.
Rubbing in a circular motion! Konban wa
Hee hee! Konban wa, Prudence-san.
Japanese was a blast (as ever).
Now it's bedtime for the old guy.
You really did start something with this assignment. Splendid!
Lyn - Now you've got me listening to vincent. I've had that one playing over a few posts. Awwwwwww
EEEEEEEEEEK! Good thing I'm waaaaaaaaaaaay down here...below the FILTH up above! LOL! HEY! M-B over in OZ says it's SNOWING? Please tell me he's pulling my SNOWSHOES!!!???
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK! ;) WHAT should I pack NOW?!?
OOOOPS, how RUDE of me..MORNING DIVEY BOY!;)
Morning, Ame.
We had a brief flirtation with winter yesterday. Lots of the old white stuff, most of which is still hanging about today, but it's not too disruptive.
The airports were closed yesterday but they're open again now.
The phrases "I told you so" and "hee hee hee" spring to mind.
Just pack your unicycle and some swimwear and hope for the best.
RIGHT-O! CHEERIO! Good thing I'm an all-terrain kinda gal! Altho' it's been yeeeeeeeeeeeears since I've navigated thru the white stuff! Is a scarf, knitted cap and heavy coat a must-pack? Sexy, long underwear? A ski mask? Astronaut suit? Ticket to Tahiti instead? ;)
Haunting, isn't it Kate.
Layers, Ame, layers.
It's freezing outside, but shops and museums and galleries will be way too hot.
Think "peelable".
Good advice DB! Peelable is key! Cuz I KNOW it'll be warm inside..and I get hot very easily these days...what with my given whore-moan situation these days...sometimes it SUCKS getting older ya know? ;) Oh, tanks for the tip!
See today's post for a weather update.
