Yep. People take their legends so seriously. I'm so glad to find some people still see the humor in it.
This Christmas, I found that members of my conservative (R) family have bought into the "tradition" of Elf on the Shelf. It began as a story in the 1950s, where the elf sat on a shelf during the day, watching the activities of the family. After everyone had gone to bed, he went back to Santa to report on the Good/Bad little children, returning at dawn in another part of the house to continue his duties until Christmas Eve. My Tea Party family does not see any irony in this, between what they perceive as government interference in their lives, and the Homeland Security Elf they have spying on the kids. Eeew!
Oh god, Speedway, I'm so sorry. Or maybe I should just say Oh god, America, I'm so sorry. The Tea Party is so awful I keep hoping in my heart of hearts that they'll just disappear.
Yeh, Petrea, I think I may just have to plan on spending my Christmases somewhere else. This is getting so discouraging. However, I was the one who christened the doll as "Homeland Security Elf." It's a whole kit, complete with adoption papers.
Petrea, you need the Tea Party to keep the Republicans split between their normal brand of Fascism and the extreme insanity of the far right. Keep 'em bickering and disunited; what the world does not want to see is a saner (and therefore more vote-worthy) right wing in the USA. They're dangerous, but they're a joke and best kept that way as something to point and laugh at come election time.
Speedway, England's cold and dark but a saner place to spend Christmas. Come on over.
I see your point about the Tea Party -- but I'm really tired of their authoritarian, non-compromising policies that they keep trying to ram through. As you would say, "a pox on them!"

This is funny in a disturbing sort of way.
