Lunchtime in the Garden of Good and Evil

Bleah …
Yes, it's that most hateful time of the year once again: the dreaded office Christmas party.
I predict a low turnout at work today.
If last year is anything to go by, a few people will drift in during the day, shuffling like zombies and moaning, others will be missing, some may never be seen again.

A different venue this year, and as I'm still hicking about on my stick I made sure I got the end seat near the door, well away from the more boisterous parts of the room.
The food was good: the usual spicy parsnip soup followed by what was referred to on the menu as a chartreuse but which turned out to mean "wrapped in cabbage". It was yummy: puy lentils, butternut squash and celeriac baked in a cream sauce and then wrapped up in a crisp savoy cabbage parcel and steamed just long enough for the cabbage to soften and go bright green; accompanied by roast potatoes and parsnips and a great dolloping of pickled red cabbage baked with sprouts and chestnuts.
Yum
Oatcakes, Stilton and coffee for afters.

Most of the others went for roast suckling peeeg followed by chocolate cheesecake. Inevitably they were pretty drunk by the time that came around and here's Erin adding a "lemon curd jus" to Dale's cheesecake while he was in the loo, except that she used stingingly hot English mustard left over from her peeeg.
Piquant!
After that, things took the inevitable slide downhill, as the consumption of a combination of beers, wines and sickening kiddie-sweet comedy cocktails accelerated at the usual alarming pace.
I didn't bother taking many photos this year as I was Mister Grumpy on painkillers and just wanted out of there.
They chose the venue this year for its close proximity to the places they would be spending the next twelve hours: strip joints, nightclubs, curry houses and other vomitoria.
Luckily, some of the staff have kids and had to leave early so I slipped out with them. Apologies for no chocolate willies and penis racing this year, but I don't have the stomach to stick around for that stuff any more.
At least I can enjoy a soupçon of schadenfreude today, watching them suffer.

… Unless of course the world really did end and this morning is the afterlife … Oh, fuck; the afterlife is precisely the same crap I had to endure during life. Sigh …

Merry Christmas everybody.

I want that Christmas stick tree! It would be useful for East eggs, too! Wow, the possibilities are endless! xoxoxo

(We're on the road again!)

Ha ha Grumpy Mr Christmas, maybe I should get some of the old photos out of Christmas Past to show your pals on here, of a very different young Dive enjoying himself at Christmas.

But I am with you on the drink side, not a good idea, I like to enjoy myself and know about it the next day.

Well … the office is mostly empty this morning and the few people who made it in are veeeery subdued.
In comparison I'm quite jolly and not being at all quiet! Yay!

I'm with Savannah - I love the Christmas stick!

The menu at your party is much nicer than any I've ever attended. Did they take the trouble to accommodate your vegetarian taste, or did everyone get that wonderful sounding meal?

We had a choice of four main dishes, Speedway; the others were all traditional Christmas cack but the veggie one looked scrummy so I ordered that. I'll be making it myself now as it's a stunner for winter eating.

Oh, and would you please share the recipe when you make it? I'd also love some parsnip soup.

Anyone can make parsnip soup, Speedway. I'll be having a go at the chartreuse after Christmas and I'll make a cookery post out of it. The recipe will be my usual: make it up as I feel like.

I saw that IMMEDIATELY, sugar, but I didn't want to gush! ;~) xoxoxoxox

Savannah in London! Lovely.

Dive, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy yourself. It looks like your coworkers are having fun together. But I sympathize with not wanting to get drunk. I love a glass of wine, but my heavy drinking days are past.

I'm looking forward to when you share those recipes.

Glad to hear you didn't suffer any damage from the Office Party. And your meal sounds very tasty. (Looking forward to your next cooking post).
I also like that stick tree. It's got an aesthetic minimalism to it.

I hope your back is on the mend. Also that you get a holiday from work.

And N & I wish you a Merry Christmas, filled with excellent books and good food.

You're totally entitled to gush about your fabulous city, Savannah.

Petrea, I'm feeling a little better today, thank you. I managed to hobble into the city and do some festive shopping and thoroughly enjoyed myself this morning. Of course, the knowledge that I won't have to go in to the office until next year has considerably improved my mood. I'll try making the chartreuse after Christmas; until then I've just stocked up on fresh baby octopus, sashimi tuna, lobster and clams, so I'm sorted until the big day.

Ms.M the ikebana tree seems very popular. I only took it to show the strip joint door just across the little cobbled street from the restaurant (the street is the enticingly named Lobster Lane in Norwich).

A very Merry Christmas to you and N! May you eat, drink and be merry as much as you like and suffer no consequences.
