When I went downtown today, I stopped by to look at Victory on her Monument. She looks fairly large, in proportion to the column. In contrast,the column supporting Eros seems so large for such a little guy.
Sorry about your field trip. I'd be depressed, too. Is that one of the treats they used to entice you to work there?
Yay for Victory. She sure looks good with her new golden torch and her pigeon hat.
This one's not Eros, he's actually Génie de la Liberté, the Spirit of Liberty. His column is so fat because - like the Monument in London - there's a spiral staircase in there.
The base used to house the massive stucco elephant that's one of my favourite parts of Les Misérables (I mean the book, not the musical).
As for Paris, I'll pop over again soon. And at least I won't have to be embarrassed by being part of a huge crowd of gawking architects, shepherded around the tourist spots; I can do my Victor Hugo bit and wander the streets properly.
Pigeon hat. Hmph. When Victory was first modeled she had wings of her own but the builders were concerned they'd catch the wind and she'd fly off the pedestal, not to soar, but plummet to the ground. As compromise, the artist gave her a pigeon hat, instead.
There's a spiral staircase, too, as well as a Civil War museum in the base. No elephants, though.
I think the pigeon hat looks cool. And what a great way to stop pigeons from sitting on her head and doing what pigeons do.
