Gargoyle Envy

Nobody does gargoyles quite like the Parisians.
No reason to post this except I'm too lazy to write and I like the evening light against the cotton wool sky.
Oh, and the extreme gargoyle action.

Extreme and a little creepy. It's a shame we don't still stick gargoyles on buildings. Why don't you change that?

I do my best, Robyn, but it's kinda hard persuading people they need gargoyles on their building.

At first glance, I saw a lot of beautiful marble lace. Then...monsters. Why did they cover buildings intended to honor Christ with beasties that look like dementors and frighteners out of Ghostbusters? Do the ones at the top also act as scuppers for rain?

Sculptors have to have a bit of fun, Speedway.
And yes, the whole point of gargoyles is to throw rain clear of the stonework. Fun, monstery and practical.

I agree with Scout! You should convince your clients that they NEED gargoyles! You will have to reinvent them a bit for modern times. They could look a bit like demented celebrities or politicians. Our Michelle Bachmann with Bat-Wings, some of your Royals. Think of the possibilities!

The gargoyles are great! I've always liked the odd mix of gargoyles and saints.
And I especially like Neetzy's ideas for reinventing them for modern times. Lots of possibilities!

I do, I do! I need gargoyles on my building! But please, no Bachmann. I'd rather not be reminded of her. Medieval monsters are far more pleasant.

Neetzy, that's simply too horrifying to contemplate.

Gargoyles and saints are a pretty entertaining mix, Ms.M. which after all is what mediæval peasants needed to bring them to church.
My second ever post dealt with a statue I spotted high up on a local church (way out of sight of the naked eye) of a bear with a very impressive boner. Those old masons must have had a real hoot up there on the scaffolding, hiding rude stuff from the parishioners below.

Petrea, I totally agree. We see too much of politicians and Zelebs in the papers and on TV. They should be decently hidden from view rather than given the oxygen of publicity.

Oh come on! You can twist the celebs into twisted and ugly gargoyles. Boehner's can have a boner and Weiner can have a boner and batwings! The original nameless artists must have had someone in mind!

Ha ha, Neetzy! What would you do with Bachmann?

Neetzy, you're so right! Brilliant.

No, no and NO! Those people should be expunged from our memories. Stone effigies will give them a permanence they do not deserve.

But you need grotesques! My students are already playing with it on Photoshop! Ms. M. my student has already attached batwings to Bachmann! Hopefully I can post it soon!

Neetzy, that is too funny and delightfully subversive.
