At last my back is sufficiently healed that I can limp about without my stupid stick.
Mind you, I still lurch like Quasimodo's uglier brother.
On the way back from breakfast and shopping in the city this morning the news bulletin reported the return of Mandy to government and the OJ trial verdict.
Er … What the fuck?
I thought I'd gone through a time warp into a past only slightly less hideous than today's fucked-up world.
Then I realised what must have happened: at long last they've run out of news.
We've finally reached the point in time where we've done every crappy thing that it's possible to do so we've now got to go back and suffer it all again in the form of fucking repeats.
Somebody on the News Quiz this week mentioned that the world today seems like the eighties in reverse: America invades Afghanistan while Russia is the oil rich crapitalist haven for billionaires.
It's like they're taking turns.
That is so fucking annoying.
At least John Mc.Cain will be happy; in a few years he can go back and invade Vietnam again.
I don't understand how the man can possibly stand there with a straight face and say "Vote for me! I'm proud to remind you that I took part in an illegal war where America got it's ass kicked by people in pyjamas! And they kicked MY ass, too! That makes me an ideal candidate for President."
I've been keeping out of the US for a bit as what I've got to say would only upset people. This, however, is an entertaining read from today's Guardian Book Reviews.
Is it just me or are we just re-hashing past fuck-ups?
Whatever … if the eighties comes back, no WAY am I getting a poodle perm!
Shit … a fat, balding bloke in spandex. That's too grim to even think about.
Don't mind me … I'm just sitting here in the dark, listening to old Rickie Lee Jones albums and feeling crappy.

I thought the same at the news but I'm so glad that OJ has finally been nabbed. Guilty, guilty, guilty, twelve times over. Hooray!
I do have to agree that spandex is not a good look. Think of a boa constrictor that has just had lunch!!
At least we only have another month of the US election "stuff" (I honestly can't think of another word for it).
I can't imagine a world with John McCain as president but sadly I don't get a vote.
Nothing new under the sun, you know. History repeats itself and all that.
finally OJ goes to jail, though. That's something, isn't it?
Scrivens, Mme! It's almost half past one in the morning in Adelaide!
Is jetlag still messing your inner clock about?
The world with John. Mc.Cain as president would be pretty much like the last eight years except the whole world will be VERY quiet around him and move slooowly.
At his age, any sudden shock could impose upon the screaming world the most truly and dangerously insane, geographically ignorant, mentally imcompetent, gun-slinging, God-bothering moron as president.
It will be fundamentalist third world war time.
Yeehaw!
Hi, Robyn!
We were writing at the same time. Nothing new there, then. Hee hee.
History repeats itself?
Holy crap! I'm digging a hole right now to hide in.
Hi Dive! So sorry I couldn't meet you today. Ended up at the old place as my date preferred to go there.
Why? What happened? Bad coffee?
Glad you're much better now. Try multi-coloured leg warmers. Keep you warm and very 80's.
You went back there? The service has been so totally crap for ages that we all gave up on the place. At least in the new place I can turn up at nine and get served coffee and a decent croissant.
You had a date? I hope it was Thom! Hee hee.
Multi-coloured leg-warmers … my soul weeps in despair at the memory of those awful things. Sheesh. Sometimes I think I really was born two hundred years too late.
I agree, Dive. By the way, good blog friend of mine Petrea is over at mine, thinking that perhaps we have very good trains here and she feels quite envious. I leave it to your superior knowledge, blah blah...!
At least balding is extra insurance against the possibility of a poodle perm.
Sheesh! Don't get me started on the trains, Lynn!
Hee hee.
Vic: At long last you've discovered just what people mean when they say "You know what they say about bald men."
I was thinking that, Dive. A date? What about Thom?!
Yes I know I'm up far too late. I should go to bed. There's you, sitting in the dark listening to whatever it was and here I am, catching up on emails and doing Sudoku. My body clock's all off. Ok I'm off now. zzz
Dive I have just a quick moment before Eric is ready and we head into the dining room for a breakfast buffet of the most amazing food and then pack our bags and spend the day toodling through the Tuscan countryside on our way eventually to Pisa and to our 6 pm flight back to Paris, but I just had to say that we happened to have the news on in the hotel yesterday and the TOP story, with the financial world going to hell in a handbasket, was OJ and I immediately said (outloud even!) "What the f*ck! That's the top news?" So I'm going back to ignoring the news. Oh but I did see London's floppy-haired mayor on TV. That's sure some look. Anyway, as sad as I am to leave Italy, I am SO EXCITED that in 2 days I'll be in London hanging out with YOU! I'm enjoying reliving your time with the Benauts over at Adelaid Daily, and can't wait to join the London fun! I'll pack my jumpter and brolly and be prepared for horrible weather, but you'll provide all the sunshine I'll need. See you soon!
Sorry i can't do the eighties again - i burnt all my shoulder pads........ which is a shame - I could use them as incontinence pads in a few years!!!!
Sleep well. Lynn.
Katie: You'll certainly need a brolly, and probably a wetsuit, too. It is blowing a gale and hammering down torrential rain right now.
I am sitting here looking at it all and wishing I were driving around Tuscany with you and Eric.
The news at the moment is quite surreal; I'm glad you had the same reaction to it.
I can't wiat to see you in London. You must let me know where and when to meet you!
Jules: That's a particularly unsettling image at breakfast time. Hee hee.
Dive and Lynn - I was with a girl. Hmmm... is that worse? :D And no. Thom wasn't there.
D'oh! I missed coffee with two weemen!
Awww crap!
Huh! You've secretly been going to church; I'd heard that they were serving croissants to get the customers back in. Yes, my body clock is off too - I fall asleep at 7 pm but have to get up to feed the cats at 10.30 pm so somehow I'm still awake. MB is asleep though; we seem to be taking it in shifts! We've spent two days trying to get the garden back in some kind of order. Sheesh - winter weeds - everywhere and the oak tree is now dropping its "blossom" so there's rubbish everywhere.
Saw Snuffles last night and he looked more like his old cheeky self. I had a closer look at the wound which seems to be healing in spots while has extended in others. I think he's rubbing his skin off himself, there doesn't seem to be any infection, just some rotting flesh hanging off which smells bad. Anyway, I'm still putting food out when he comes, encouraging him to come to me but tonight I haven't seen him.
Oh, poor Snuffly! I do hope he gets better, Mme. I know you can't really grab him and take him to the vet's but can you not talk to the vet about him and perhaps they might be able to suggest a cream you could put on him or a food supplement that will help him heal?
Good luck with the garden! I am now shutting mine down for the winter. We're due our first frost tonight. Brr!
If only the rest of the world could vote, Mme. Benaut. You might save us from ourselves. I recall a London headline from the 2004 American elections, which I'll paraphrase: "How can half of America be so stupid?"
What terrifies me far more than John McCain as president is the possibility of him dying in office and leaving Sarah Palin in his place.
Please encourage all the Americans you know to vote with intelligence. Let's show the world we're not stupid by electing the intelligent candidate, Mr. Obama.
Oh! As I read the comments I see Lynn mentioned me. I feel famous. And Katie, you'll be happy to know the OJ story hasn't been the top story here. It's maybe third or fourth or even lower. The financial markets are still the top story, even over politics at the moment. Money is on everybody's mind. Good old America.
Now I believe I'll visit Mme Benaut and see what she's been blogging about. Thanks for letting me blab, Dive.
Thanks for the great article. If it weren't for you I wouldn't think to read comments from Europe. I cannot stomach John "Get off my lawn" McCain or his cute little, polar bear killing, ""folksy sidekick either. So many Americans have been brainwashed by the so called "family values" right wingers.
