Sheesh!
There was ice all over the car this morning for the first time this autumn. Thank goodness for quick-clear windscreens. I'll soon have to park the thing in the garage every night.
Hey ho.
I forgot to post anything today and I've spent so long over breakfast and chatting and shopping in the city that I really don't have the time - or the inclination - to write anything worth reading.
So here's a happy, happy, singalong song for Saturday to round off my week of non-dating woe; the beautiful Susanna Wallumrød (you know I have a thing for weird Scandinavian chanteuses) singing "Love Will Tear Us Apart", from Susanna and the Magical Orchestra's astonishingly lovely album of covers from a couple of years back, "Melody Mountain".
If you're waiting for the drums and guitars to come in you've got a bloody long wait.
Susanna deconstructs classic rock songs into things of stark minimalist beauty.
Her versions of Prince's "Condition of the Heart" and Laughing Lenny Cohen's "Halleluiah" rip out my still beating heart, tear it into tiny pieces and leave them strewn about the carpet.
Go buy it. And all her other stuff, too.
Because I said so.
And I am always right.

Wow that's the longest post I've ever seen for someone who has 'no inclination to write'. lol! That'll be the day, Dive. You're a writer for sure.
Most people use another "w" word to describe me, Lynn.
I'm besotted by this woman, and not just because she's got the vocal chords of a siren. Why she and her band haven't yet made it onto the soundtrack of a David Lynch film remains a mystery - but then neither of them are likely to be leaving us soon, so there's still hope!
Can't think of what that "w" word might be, Dive. Couldn't possibly be "wanker", so I'm stumped.
That's got a lovely swirly quality to it, kind of trippy.
The Scandinavian jazz and pop scene is a great place to lurk and explore, Lucio.
There's Susanna there's and Silje Nergard (check out her "Nightwatch" album).
Silje has jazz piano überGod Tord Gustavsen and his band backing her (again, check out his "Changing Places" album for great late night music).
As for Norwegian jazz; holy moly! It is the most vibrant scene since Miles and Coltrane lit up bebop.
As for the "w" word; you're talking to a man who's been sans femme for so long that I managed to write a successful self-help book for onanists: "Fifty Ways To Love Your Lever."
Robyn: She has a way with other people's songs (as well as her own). You should cehck out her version of Jolene (seriously).
Great video; I'll definitely search out this chick. One song was not enough! As for the "w" word, all I can think of is wonderful warm-hearted wanton walloping wag.
Wanton, Katie?
Hee hee hee!
That's made my day.
Dive just so you know, the meaning of wanton I meant was rebellious, playful or frolicsome, and not lewd or gratuitously malicious! Frolicsome -- that's a fun word! I do think I need to make that my word of the day and try to embody it.
Awww … But I so enjoy being lewd and gratuitously malicious, Katie.
Frolicsome is indeed a splendid word.
Hmm. I looked on Utube for hallelujah but couldn't find it. I can see how she might have some late night appeal but not with those sad lyrics unless you're a total masochist Dive dear.
I love those sad lyrics, Mme.
These lyrics were of course the last recorded utterances of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, who topped himself before the song was released.
Happy, cheerful stuff indeed.
"As for the "w" word; you're talking to a man who's been sans femme for so long that I managed to write a successful self-help book for onanists: Fifty Ways To Love Your Lever." LOL! Are you telling me it hasn't made you a millionaire and household name yet? Why, I could shift at least a hundred copies - and I wouldn't even have to go beyond my immediate circle of friends!
Makes me think of a late night television ad that runs here in Australia. The subject is "erectile disfunction". It features two dorky gents in ill-fitting suits - "Stiff" and "Stiff", would you believe - who drop their trousers, then their underpants, and smilingly proceed to play a piano with their (off-camera) woodies. This priapic prowess is a big hit with their geriatric audience, who leap to their feet and give the boys a standing (sic) ovation. One old geezer is so aroused (I know, I know) by what he has seen that he asks the MC: "Can you teach me to play like Stiff and Stiff again?" Yes, he's told. "Oh, goody!", he thinks, clapping like a moonstruck moron.
It's at this stage that one notices his wife, who has been standing next to him all along, and one thinks (well, I do), some medical conditions are best left untreated.
PS Your musical recommendations have been duly noted and are much appreciated.
Cheerio, old cock (I know, I know)!
Oh, hee hee, Lucio. I wish we had ads like that over here.
Loving appalling puns as I do, I once did a series of posts on America's destruction of any chance of peace in the Middle-East called "Iraqtile Dysfunction."
Yes, but did you mention that they've been bombing the shiite out of the place for the last several years?
Groan!
Hee hee. Excellent punnage.
It's 2.00am here, Dive. If you want genius, you'll have to contact me during office hours, which are between 1.00pm and 1.30 weekdays - provided I'm not having a long lunch.
2AM! Sheesh! My alarms go off at 4:40!
I do like those office hours, though.
It's "high tea" time here in Blighty and I'm about to ignore tea and scones and attack some gorgeous, sashimi quality fatty tuna I got this morning from David the Fishmonger.
Yay!
Sleep well.
Insomnia and I have been dating for quite some time now. She's not the best girl I've ever gone out with, but she's certainly the only one I'm afraid of going to bed with.
Bon nuit.
When you say breakfast, shopping and chatting - whom with? And when are you going to Harvey next?
Well, what wayward word will 'W' work? Wanker? Wrong. Wit? Wonderful!
Lucio you're so funny x
Insomnia's a bitch, Lucio. I find - with the stupid hours I keep - that if I'm not asleep before ten in the evening I cannot sleep at all.
Sigh …
Hi, Joy! Tony and Terry; and later David and then I bumped into Eva and then Michael and by then it was elevenses and I needed more caffeine.
I'll probably go to Harvey's sometime in the next couple of weeks.
Lynn: Lucio gets "wit"; I get "wanker".
Audacious alliteration, by the way!
I was insomniac from the age of 6 to 9. As a child, it was such a miserable thing for me to go through. I felt so alone. My mother promised to get me some pills for it, and I'm still waiting!
It must have been awful at that age, Joy.
At least now you have Thom to snuggle up with … though that's probably not going to encourage the two of you to sleep much. Hee hee.
No darling the wit is for you, silly! he he. It was just an addition to the marvellous Lucio that he is funny.
hello! seems as if i left this window open, sugar ;) such is age, so easily distracted! it was the music, i sort of wandered off to itunes ...
xoxox
The thing I loved about Joy Division, and about so much indie pop in the 80's, is that they made insanely sad songs danceable.
This was so, so, so beautiful. I'm a fan already. Thank you!
Lynn: I've added Lucio's new blog to my side bar if you want to pay him a visit.
Savannah: it is kinda dreamy, is it not?
xoxoxo
Hi, Suesun. I've always loved playing that song on stage; it is indeed impossible not to dance to; somewhat bizarre considering the lyrics.
Thanks Dive I will but I know him well from Paris and he's hugely entertaining.
He is indeed.
Lynn: Really? Funny? And I thought you were laughing AT me!
Dive: I know you only did it to spare my feelings, but I assure you, there was absolutely no need to drop the suffix "-less" from your epithet.
Joy: I'd say "I'll sleep when I'm dead", but I'm still rather attached to the idea of waking up.
Lynn: There you go again! To call you incorrigible, Lynn, is to spend a twenty-dollar word and not feel the need to recover any change. LOL
Suesun: That's so true, and probably why sad clowns like myself have never had any trouble shaking their booties to JD's tunes.
Dive: I'm honoured - and a little freaked out. Now fucking up really isn't an option!
Lynn: Oh, enough already! Now you've got Dive doing it. LOL
Dive: I hope you heard that.
Incorrigible? Moi? In what way? I am innocent of these charges. lol you ARE funny, Lucio. I would never laugh AT you, or anyone, in fact. Well maybe some people... if pushed. ;)
Minimalist beauty is the best kind =)
I love how (in the video) Susanna sings about love tearing people apart and is effectively portrayed so: A trapped persona consolidated by the strong thin lighting from above, and the dark, yet simple dress she wears. However her hair is all free and non-perfect and thrown about. Perhaps she seeks to be free? A beautiful piece of music. Never heard it before so thanks for sharing =)
