I'm full of coffee and porridge and wrapped up in my Observatory thermals with a duvet over my lap (there's no heating in the office at the weekends and it's two degrees C in here). I have a bag of crayfish tails and some sashimi grade tuna in the fridge and am armed with Alina Ibragimova's latest CD of Mendelssohn Violin Concertos and both Alina's and Isabel Faust's Complete Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, so I'm pretty much set up for the weekend.

You are so close to the truth. These three witches are but a small part of a huge square filled with "surprise" fountains that lie dormant for the most part but spring twenty feet into the air when people walk over them. These three caught my eye as they calmed down after a vigorous spurt, reminding me of Macbeth's Wyrd Sisters. It took a good ten minutes of hanging around before I could catch them again with the camera.
I love your picture and interpretation, Dive. They do kinda look like three witchy hags in ragged robes. I saw them and first thought that a water main had broken beneath the pavement somewhere, or in a house.
Good grief! It's so cold you need a duvet? I'd just go into torpor. Maybe they'll give you an assignment in Paris as a reward for your hard work and loyalty?
Or maybe they'll let me keep my job. That's what I'm hoping, anyhoo, since half the office is gone in the last two rounds of cuts, and with a right-wing government here and the upcoming choice on your side of the pond of either a right-wing government or an extreme right-wing junta, I can see no hope for recovery in what's left of my lifetime.

Ms.M. if they were in my office this morning they would be ice sculptures. Some serious frost overnight, and this is a concrete building with single-glazed metal windows. I've brought in my own fan heater this morning and damn their electricity bill.

Petrea, this is capitalism. The only workers who keep their jobs are the ones who have no choice but to take pay cuts and work weekends for free. It's the American way, and it's crossed the Atlantic.
Is that happening here? I know people are working extra hours but I'm ignorant of the abhorrent working conditions. What surprises me when I hear this is that so many Americans still don't want to unionize.
Our crappy Tory government is trying to push through legislation that will enable bosses to offer workers worthless shares in the company in exchange for their human rights (meaning they can sack them for no reason and with no compensation, force them to work unpaid overtime and cut their wages with no recompense - what happened to me - and stop their pension and redundancy rights). You guys are not protected by the European Union Employment Laws and neither - if we don't kick out the Tories double-quick - will we be.
Heehee! And Hey! You guys are setting the example for us not the other way around. You are the Socialism people. We are the Capitalists! And someone did some really dumb banking in there somewhere too. Well, I am so sorry this is happening with your economy too. You may have noticed Jamey has been laid off for over a month (from his company's poor money management). But now we are about to join the big Capitalist co. WAL-MART! Bahahee And I LIKE IT! Yay for successful companies that can give my husband a handsome raise. Win! Of course he doesn't start for another week so we are still living extra low on the hog. I hope we all can survive this dreadful recession and make it to the other side!! Thinking of you! You have a b-day near Mme. B's don't you? Facebook will remind me, no worries. Stay warm. x

We've not had a decent Socialist government since the 1960s; most of Europe has been right wing since then (of course, we consider Obama and the Democrats to be right-wing and the Republicans to be far-right extremists). So glad Jamey's back in work; being unemployed is truly scary.
