By four-thirty in the afternoon (when this was taken) it's already pretty dark here in the frozen north. By Christmas it'll be dark at three-thirty. Sheesh!
This is the time of year that reminds me we're as far north as the bottom end of Hudson's Bay, which is why we're such a miserable bunch of sods much of the time.
Roll on Spring (how many hundreds of times have I said that on this blog over the years?) …

But unsettling that it gets dark so soon there. It's hard enough for me that it's dark by 5 pm here at Christmas.
A nice early evening shot taken in late afternoon, Dive! Just think, once we get to Christmas, the days again begin to lengthen, so by late January the sun will only have set at 4:30.

In July, the sun is up until 10pm.

As opposed to "Old Dive" I actually enjoy the long winter darkness; it makes what tiny glimpses of sunshine we get all the more precious.
Yes, Speedway; Spring has already left the starting blocks and is jogging down the first mile of the marathon it takes to reach us.
I know, Petrea. It makes summer here so frustrating at the Observatory; plus the sun comes up at 3:30 in the morning and it's hell getting enough sleep. At midsummer we only get an hour or so of reasonable darkness and it's never really dark enough for astrophotography.
I think more Colonials should come over here in the winter; it has its own beauty.

I have a fantasy of spending the Christmas season in London. I lost the spirit long ago, and I wonder if that would bring it back.

And I've been complaining about the dark coming at 5:00 p.m. My daughter is going to Sweden after Christmas. I'm guessing its darker there.
Neetzy, the bottom of Sweden (where most people live) is level with northern England, but the TOP of Sweden is way up in the Arctic. I hope she's going to the warm part.
Hi Dive Oh I miss this....! Arrived back in London from cld cloudy Barcelona to brilliant sunshine on Thursday but cheeez it must have been all of 3 degrees. Have spent since then on planes and in airports - am a dribbling looney but god the sun is good!!! HWDB has collapsed and I am struggling on hoping to get through the day...... BTW he tried his coffee juggling trick in Singapore airport but not to the same spectacular effect as in Pret A Manger!!!!
