Continuing the theme set last Thursday: this is what a Mercedes Benz car ought to look like.
Yet it doesn't.
Not by a long way.
Mercs these days are dull slabs of mediocrity.
They do try (if you're rich enough) but not very hard.
If you pay more than most people will
earn in a lifetime you can get one that has little features taken from
this classic model nailed onto an ugly slab. It has no elegance or
beauty; it is merely a modern car that someone in styling has tried to
improve by tacking on some 'retro' detailing.
Why not make one that looks like this?
Eh?
Or even this?

Lovely bits of highway jewelry, aren't they. It the same as if they were jewelry - the diamond ring bought in a chain store rather than commissioned by a goldsmith - you get the glitz but none of the love.
Not a bit of those cars was conceived in the wind tunnel or CAD programs, but crafted by hands smoothing over clay to match what the eye and heart imagined, then made real.
There's a romance about them that modern cars lack. A modern Merc may be a technological marvel but it's got no soul.
Technological marvels abound in our world, but often at the cost of the human input. I heard a comment last night that computers can solve all sorts of problems, except for visual ones.
As for technology taking over, can you explain to me the modern F1 car? I once saw a McLaren show car exhibited at IMS. It was, of course, beautifully done, absolutely spotless. But it reminded me of one of the vehicular contraptions in "The Great Race."

I had the feeling that, if the car actually needed all those extra little fins, wings, and ducts, there must be something inherently wrong with the basic design.
That car should close its doors. Shameful.
Speedway, I can only explain the ugliness of the modern Formula One car by comparing it to the ugliness of Bernie Ecclestone. Probably the most grasping and immoral person on the planet he has progressively ruined the sport over the past decade for personal gain. We now have a series of useless racetracks in bizarre countries (that pay him a lot to have a race there) and byzantine rule changes to suit his whims that result in ugly and badly performing cars. The days of great drivers driving great cars around great tracks are sadly long gone.
