You're right, especially on the amount of money spent on these campaigns. There is a lot of "repair" that needs to be done.
They've got about two days to do any repairs they can, Ms.M. because right after that they'll be mudslinging their way toward the next election.
The only hope I see for conciliation is that notorious Boehner and his cohort, Eric Cantor, will be up for re-election in a year or two. They know people hate them, so may be in more of a mood to "just get along" to work towards some positive solutions to our problems.
I'd thought it was just me, so didn't say anything until a friend asked whether I'd gotten any racist e-mails about President Obama. This was 4 years ago and has been a continuous theme of many messages we both received from friends we previously thought were, um, more enlightened. Linda and I only discussed it between ourselves because we knew we'd be told we were imagining the racism, but it really bothers us. Linda had said that she never thought many of the people she got that mail from would ever have those values and now thinks she can't even continue the friendships.
The night before the election, I got one from an acquaintance that was a series of photos of billboards about POTUS that were frightening to see actually existed in this country.
I also got a rather well-done video from a woman I know who lives in Alabama, describing the way the Muslim religion is spreading the world over. This video was distributed to small, conservative Christian churches in the south and is nothing other than subtle propaganda, designed to instill fear among those people. Sadly, my friend believes it. She didn't start out her life with those fears, but as she ages and becomes more isolated, the prejudices are building their walls.
Another friend remarked about the number of racist e-mails she got from members of her own church. She said she prefers to believe that they didn't know what they were, so just forwarded them on as a matter of course. It never occurs to people that being a Christian does not involve such hatred and bigotry as revealed by those e-mails; it makes us into the US version of the Taliban.
Pardon my rant, Dive, but this gets me going every damn time I even think a bit about it.

Here I sit inside my hollowed out volcano stroking my white Persian cat, smiling as my plans come together.
Not since the disappearance of the Roanoke colony back in 1590 has the North American continent been more puzzled; our country continues to dissolve from within.
We just spent more than a billion USD to smear the human spirit, only to wind up with the exact same government we had a week prior.
Dumb doesn't begin to explain it, but it's a good start.
