Moan, Moan, Moan

Sheesh.
The myth of the "paperless office" is once more debunked.
I got in to work this morning to find shiny new printers/copiers everywhere.
Great!
Except that none of the drivers seem to want to talk t0 our servers and IT are spontaneously combusting in a frantic effort to make beepy stuff talk to other beepy stuff.
I told them "It's Postscript crap. It's exactly what happened last time we replaced the machines." but because none of the present IT staff worked here back then, they will now spend the day running round the office like headless chickens on acid before eventually conceding that it is indeed a Postscript problem and they will then admit that they ordered the printers without the correct Postscript hardware.
Hey ho.
Meanwhile, there is a lot of beeping and clattering going on to no apparent effect. There is also a choice selection of expletives tainting the crappy, air-conned office atmosphere.
Emails are all very well, but our so-called paperless office requires a vast amount of letters, forms, invoices and general crap to be printed each day and suddenly we are back in the age of steam.

As one of the only people here old enough to remember how to write, I have spent the morning hand-cranking out my letters, interrupted by secretarial staff peering over my shoulder, cooing "Oooh. Haven't you got lovely writing?" as if they don't teach handwriting skills to kids today … er … actually, they don't, and they haven't done that since my old grammar school days; so neat handwriting and the arcane and magical knowledge of the workings of a fountain pen are concepts beyond the cranial capacity of these strange children I call my "administrative assistants".

On top of that, Heidi has just tendered her resignation in a fit of monotonal Finnish pique (to hear a Finn getting upset is hilarious as they have no tonal inflections and everything comes out as flat as Stephen Hawking's talky-box), and Aga has just whispered to me that she has an interview next week.
Having spent last year building up staff numbers to a stage where we can almost cope, we are now losing two of our best girls.

Poo all over today.

It's only eleven o'clock; it's pissing down with rain and I have the feeling today still has a shedload of crap to throw at me.
And you wonder why I'm such a carefree, cheerful sort of chap.
Happy days …

So how was your trip to the city yesterday? As usual, I wanted to meet up but I didn't know where you were by 12 noon. We could have had lunch at Delice. Have you been there yet?

One good thing about today, it's Friday! Tomorrow you can have a lie in if you wish, though I know you'll be having your hot brew in the city by 9am.

I on the other hand I will be stuck in Swanton.

Thank God it's Friday! Enjoy the weekend!

I got stuck in a meeting, Joy. In the end I didn't have time to get into the city. Bummer.

Swanton? Weird. There are worse places to be stuck in, though.

While you were sunning yourselves in the Philippines, we revolted against the appalling lack of service in Waterstone's coffee bar since Emily left, so last week we ended up downstairs in Borders where the croissant was yummy and they were playing Bowie's Hunky Dory album over the PA.
I've not been to Delice yet. If I'm eating out in Norwich I'll generally go to the veggie place above Rainbow Wholefoods.
Do let us know how the house situation develops.

Funny you should mention the house. Coz I was thinking about the housewarming and all, and I said to Thom that you're definitely on the invite list. There's also a an ulterior motive behind that. Hehe. :D

It's going smoothly so far, now just waiting for the searches to take place as the bank agreed to lend us the money. Quite excited. Will miss the proximity to the city centre very much!

So now you go to Starbucks! That's even better. That's closer to where we are.

Swanton is where I'm attending my NLP Practitioner course. Which means I'll be able to charge more for my services soon :-) Finishes in April.

I've been to Pulse but... Rainbow though is good. Love the Norfolk produced apple juice they sell there.

See ya soon!

"carefree and cheerful sort of crap." You SO are carefree and cheerful.

Printers are made to make us age too quickly.

Great news on the house, Joy! And the ability to charge more for your work. Cool.

Robyn; when have I ever been anything but cheerful and happy-go-lucky? I can't ever remember having been even remotely grouchy about anything whatsoever.

hee hee hee. I typed a glaring error in my first comment, and you didn't even point it out. How gracious. Substituting "crap" for "chap" must have been Freudian.

Hee hee, Robyn. My day has been so "chappy" that I didn't notice.

Funny you should mention handwriting.
It's a major gripe for me with the graduates we get here.
They are all very well versed in pc and text speak but can't string together an intelligent sentence or write to a standard which we would have been ashamed of at age 10.

Education has gone down the shitter along with all the other values we were led to believe made us a civilised society.

Dictate a note to 'em which includes the words "to" and "you".
If they write "2" and "u", remove their intestines with a stapler (slow, messy, but tremendous fun).
It's only right.

Dive, I was thinking about putting your text to music today.
It was so 'trippy' and airy. Your monothematic exposition, is delightful, but your recapitulation needs work. for this reason I think that Joseph Haydn is the chap I would select to add musical enhancement to this fine piece of prose, Sir.

I'd have thought more Steve Reich for the dull, moaning monotony of it all.

This is no doubt one of your more entertaining posts from my point of view anyway. You really have a talent for writng dive, whether it be by hand and pen or the old fashioned way of using a keyboard. haha

hang in there.

Prithee, sire; this day I have sorely wished to penetrate the fundament of IT staff with my sharpened goose-quill.

"headless chickens on acid."

That sort of sounds like my department at the college....

I get that a lot at work. If you can picture the inside of an intensive chicken-rearing shed if a fire breaks out, that's how it is most days here.
