Just back from mother's place in Suffolk.
She asked if I'd help her get a wedding cake down to a riverside hotel. The cakes she bakes and decorates are heavy and extremely fragile, so it's always a bit of a fraught operation.
Especially with this one. The bride and groom wanted hibiscus flowers … yeah, right … Mum's great at flowers, but how the hell do you make hibiscus flowers out of sugar paste and food colouring?
Anyhoo, after much hair-tearing and swearing and off-loading cake-related trauma on Phil and me, she finished it and we managed to get it through Saturday afternoon traffic chaos and down a bumpy old mediæval street to the river and here it is:

Mum looking very relieved. If anyone breaks the flowers now it's not her responsibility.
Take the money and run!

It's beautiful, and Mum did a great jojb. AND she looks great standing next to her work. You're a good son, Dive.
I am just flabbergasted. Those flowers aren't REAL? God, you didn't tell me that you were the son of a magician...
You're both so sweet.
Maria; click on the link and pop across to Mum's blog if you want to see more. She's pretty good at her flowers.
Sounds like a scene grom a movie I've seen. I think it took place in England as well.
Nice looking cake too!!
Holy shit...I can't even make cakes out of the box.
I would have a series of small heart attacks moving that thing.
What flavour was the cake? Did she have any leftover for us, dive? Did I tell you I love sweet stuff - wedding cakes, birthday cakes, chocolate cakes, fruit cakes, mocha cakes,...cakes,....cakes....
Anyway, now I know you take after your mom! And I think Phil takes after your dad.
She made a lovely cake!
Wanna know something funny? At our wedding here in Norwich, Thom thought that the orchids on the cake were real. I said, "Nah uh." He still didn't believe me. So I started eating them! Then he believed me. The lady who made the flowers is such an artist - like your mom!
All I can say is thank god the flowers aren't frngipani.
Thank you all on mum's behalf.
And Joy: mostly the cakes are traditional rich fruit cakes, but occasionally somebody will ask for a sponge cake which is a real pain in the butt to ice.
Mum is joining us for coffee next Saturday as we have to go the the cake supplies warehouse. We'll be back at Waterstones if you're about that early.
I'd get up if she's bringing cake :D And I'm one of those who prefers sponge cakes over fruit cakes.
Hopefully I'd be well enough by then to go out. That will be 5 days after my surgery.

We'll get you something spongey next time we meet then, Joy.
Good luck with the surgery. We'll be thinking of you.
Wow Dive. That is SOME cake! The flowers are incredible and edible (sorry).
xxx Mme xxx
Hee hee, Mme! Thank you.
Thank, dive! Here's hoping that I can eat something solid by then. I'm lining up straws coz I have a feeling I shall be on a liquid diet for a few days. Dang.
Have you ever had a wisdom tooth that grew horizontally inside your gum and had to be taken out by cutting through the gum and using pliers to take them out? Do you know how painful that is? Can you tell I'm kind of horried at the thought of this giant syringe and needle going through my jaw bones? Let's hope I would be well and truly asleep when they do it.
I caught an episode of Nip/Tuck where the patient was paralysed but fully awake and felt every single slice the knife made on her face. They didn't know she could feel a thing!

I had some teeth smashed out once, Joy, and my crappy old dentist didn't get all the bits out and after a while they went icky.
My new dentist (who is brilliant) fixed up a mirror for me (I asked) so I could see what he was doing when he cut my gum and cheek open and dug out all the smashed bits lodged in my jaw.
Sorry to be gross, but seeing what he was doing made it so much easier. Watching it all get stitched back up again was cool.
I react badly to general anæsthetic so he did it under local which was great until it wore off.
Soft food for a week was indeed a bore but endurable.
So you can probably tell that I have every sympathy for your ordeal this week.
I hope you get minimum pain and maximum result.
