I almost didn't do a melee this morning.
I'm in mourning for the incomparable Lois Maxwell, who passed away this weekend.
I'm going home tonight to watch "You Only Live Twice" for that moment when Sean Connery ducks through the submarine hatch to find her sitting there primly with her Miss Moneypenny smile.
Okay, okay; so I'm also watching it because Wakabayashi Akiko is in it.
She's dead, too.
My two favourite Bond girls.
Sigh …
Notwithstanding her surname and her admittedly hilarious "cunning linguist" joke, Samantha Bond will never be Miss Moneypenny.
So long Lois; you will be missed by just about every middle-aged man on the planet.
Right … Back to Fracas Monday Melee.
The single artist melee - prompted by Groover's Pink Floyd Week and Robyn's astonishing and bizarre melee using only the lyrics from Oklahoma - has got me itching for more.
I'll be starting with a really simple one: David Bowie.
I could do a whole year's worth of melees from his lyrics.
This should please our Rich. I can picture him dancing down his hospital corridors, belting out Rebel Rebel.
Hennyway … As Bowie said in "Joe The Lion": "It's Monday."
So let's break open another tin of of crapola:
1: The Misanthropic.
(Name something - about humanity - you absolutely hate).
"So where's the moral,
When people have their fingers broken?
To be insulted by these fascists,
It's so degrading.
And it's no game"
"It's No Game" from Scary Monsters And Super Creeps
I mean, what the fuck is going on in Rangoon?
2: The Meretricious:
(Expose someone or something that's phony, fraudulent or bogus).
"God is an American."
"I'm Afraid Of Americans" from Earthling
3: The Malcontent:
(Name something you're unhappy with).
"Well I wouldn't buy no merchandise.
And I wouldn't go to war.
And I mixed with other colours,
But the nurse doesn't care.
And I hide under blankets,
Or did I run away?
I really can't remember,
Last time I saw the light of day.
But I remember Sam,
'cause he was like me.
Scream like a baby.
Sam was a gun.
And I never knew his last name,
And we never had no fun.
Well they came down hard on the faggots,
And they came down hard on the street.
They came down harder on Sam,
And they all knew he was beat.
He was thrown into the wagon,
Blindfolded, chains,
And they stomped on us.
And took away our clothes and things,
And pumped us full of strange drugs.
And oh I saw Sam falling,
Spitting in their eyes.
But now I lay me down to sleep,
And now I close my eyes.
Now I'm learning,
To be a part of soc-society.
No athletic program,
No discipline, no book.
He just sat in the backseat,
Swearing he'd seek revenge.
But he jumped into the furnace,
Singing old songs we loved."
"Scream Like A Baby" from Scary Monsters And Super Creeps
Extraordinary rendition my arse.
4: The Meritorious.
(Give someone credit for something and name it if you can).
"Love me, love me, love me, say you do
Let me fly away with you
For my love is like the wind, and wild is the wind
Wild is the wind
Give me more than one caress, satisfy this hungriness
Let the wind blow through your heart
For wild is the wind, wild is the wind
You touch me,
I hear the sound of mandolins
You kiss me
With your kiss my life begins
You're spring to me, all things to me
Don't you know, you're life itself!
Like the leaf clings to the tree,
Oh, my darling, cling to me
For we're like creatures of the wind, and wild is the wind
Wild is the wind"
"Wild Is The Wind" from Station To Station
Yes, you know who this one is for.
5: The Mirror.
(See something good about yourself and name it).
"It's not the side effects of the cocaine;
I'm thinking that it must be love."
"Station To Station" from Station To Station, surprisingly enough.
I put this one in so I could confess to mishearing the lyrics and thinking for several months that the first line was: "It's not the side effects of her cooking."
Mea Culpa.
6: The Make-Believe:
(Name something you wish for).
"I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be Heroes, just for one day
And you, you can be mean
And I, I'll drink all the time
'Cause we're lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we're lovers, and that is that
Though nothing, will keep us together
We could steal time,
just for one day
We can be Heroes, for ever and ever
What d'you say?"
"Heroes" from Heroes.
Next week I might have a go at Tom Waits. I don't know. We'll see.
Anyone else fancy doing a single artist melee?

Sadly not quite old enough to appreciate bowie, Heroes I like unless I listen to closely to the lyrics and then its a fairly maudlin song really.
You kids! Huh!
James Taylor lyrics are all in my head. Let's see what comes of it.
The recipient of #4 is a lucky woman, Dive. You say such lovely things to her.
I'm kind of spoiling my rep there, aren't I?
I'll get back to being a sweary curmudgeon tomorrow.
James Taylor's a cool choice. Go for it, Scout.
The Bond girl will be missed. And Kate, I appreciate Bowie. Nicely done, Dive. Am I allowed to be afraid of Americans too?
Tom Waits would be amazing.
Tom Waits is another easy one, Sassy. He has so many hundreds of songs to choose from.
And yes, you are allowed to be afraid.
Sas, its not that i don't appreciate Bowie i just haven't been educated by anyone who loves Bowie.
And i just can't get that wearing tights in Labrynth image out of my head.
You're a persistent bugger, Dive. Does it come with age?
Okay, I'll give your single-artist melee a bash next week.
With age comes wisdom (true, actually), decrepitude, confusion, sagginess, curmudgeonliness, incontinence, and yes, dogged persistence in the face of all reason.
Cheers, Vic.
And Kate: Labyrinth! I'd forgotten that. That was back when Jennifer Connolly was attractive; before she had that stupid boob job.
And Bowie was ludicrous in it. I prefer to remember him in The Man Who Fell To Earth.
wow, wild is the wind i always hear nina simone's voice...had to check out youtube to hear bowie...i was listening to tom waits last night i wish i was in new orleans is one of my favorites...this is going to be a great week, sugar!
This is a good one dive. I like the bowie lyrics. and now "wild is the wind" is stuck in the ole brain for the day.
I've been listening to a lot of Neil Young, so maybe I could do one from his words.
Savannah: It sure is.
Rich: Neil's a great choice!
Bravo Dive, I love Bowie!
You have proved many times that you have impeccable and truly cool musical taste, Prudence.
And once again, the dunce hat goes on my head...
I don't know much about Bowie.
But, I know a sappy man in love when I see him, Dive.....
Yes, I'm sappy. Yes, I'm in love. Yes, we just got off the phone and now I'm going to bed all sighing and mooning.
G'night all …
