It was the perfect time and place for the exhibition: right in the middle of London during the Olympic summer. At least a few people stopped to look and read and think.
The image is a justly famous one. The caption reads: "Sudan, 1998: A well-nourished Sudanese man steals maize from a starving child during a food distribution at the Medecins Sans Frontières feeding centre in Ajiep, Bahr El Ghazal Province, southern Sudan."
I'm comforted by two things: that the photographer was there to see and capture it, and that the Medecins Sans Frontières were also there. These details give me hope that humans who suck are the exception and not the rule, and that the child pictured got another chance.
You are absolutely right, Petrea. I only wish humans could get their act together and stop growing crops merely to feed animals or provide hideously polluting biofuels and use them to feed people instead. We already grow sufficient crops to eradicate famine but we waste them dreadfully.
