That Thing

Yesterday, Katherine quite rightly asked "What the hell is that … thing?"
Rather than give her the all too obvious reply, I thought I'd post photographs of it instead.
Ahem …

So now you know.
That thing is merely the "stack of tin cans" fire escape stair on the back of Richard Rogers' Lloyds Building (he's the guy who gave Paris the Pompidou Centre … he has a thing about pipework and ducts).

I've seen enough pictures of the Pompidou Centre that I thought yesterday's photo resembled that building. Seen in these pictures, the fire secape stairs remind be of the plastic coils binders one makes for reports and presentations.

Holy crap, Speedway, you are so right! I think the plastic binder people should be suing Richard Rogers right now.

Speedway, that was my first reaction too. Very office supply.

It reminds me of stainless steel canisters, or a kind of giant drill bit -- or perhaps a place where Stomp would stage a percussion performance --

Vanda, you guys have just renamed the Lloyds Building. It's now the Office Supply Centre and that's what I'll call it from now on.

Yay, Ms.M. Stomp should totally perform there. The echo from the surrounding glass offices would make a great acoustic for them.

I thought of a drill bit when I saw the picture. Too many DIY shows, I suppose~ xoxoxo

Now THAT is ugly!!!!

Savannah, you can never have enough DIY shows (say a man who's never seen one).

Katherine, it's what happens when money men (in this case insurers) want to display to one another. Taste, style, design, anything that's good and decent gets thrown out the window and crass displays of cock-waving are all that is left.
