Bin Laden's dead and we're still building ludicrous skyscrapers; I'd say that's a pretty fair start.
Meet The Shard, London's latest "fuck you" to al Qaeda.
Of course, it wasn't built for so noble a cause; it is merely - as I described it earlier this week: "a braying monument to crass commercialism with no æsthetic merit whatseover" but it does - willingly or no - flip the bird at those who think terrorism can help their cause.
After all, Hitler bombed London flat but look at it now.
Anyone fancy a job as a window cleaner?

Wow! I think those are gorgeous buildings, Dive. And no, I wouldn't want to be the window washer.
Speaking of cock, yesterday evening, I celebrated our election season: http://www.tenaciouspoodle.com/2012/09/meet-dildonian-peacock.html Might make some good graffiti.
It's a terrible building, Katherine. London deserves better.
As for the peacock, Herr Doktor Freud thinks perhaps your view of lobbyists and politicians is somewhat askew from that of the rest of us.
But hey, being somewhat askew from the crowd is the best way to be.
Talk about "cutting edge" architecture. Whew, that hurts way over here. And I love the nice, very friendly cloud, spreading rain hither and yon. Tra la!
Speedway, it's rained so much here this year that seeing a "Simpsons Sky" is such blissful relief.
I'm convinced the architect ran out of ideas when he got to the top and simply didn't bother finishing it.
Is that why it has what looks like raw edges, as though it's pieces of fabric that haven't been stitched together?
Actually, Speedway, those are the only interesting things about the whole building. I've taken some arty-farty shots of them which I might post another day.
I like the edges, too, dive, because the building would just look like a classroom pyramid without them. Like a drawing with "too many" lines, the eye picks up the ones needed to correct the shape. Does the janitor have his broom closet at the top, where it looks like there'd only be room for something like that?
I think the architect should be imprisoned in the topmost room, Speedway. Compared to such glories as the Gherkin and Canary Wharf his unimaginative overcompensatory cock is shown up to be a shallow sham.
Luckily it's south of the river so it's not allowed to besmirch the City's beautiful new buildings by standing next to them.
Can you tell I don't like the thing?
"Overcompensatory" shards. Ouch! It hurts, it hurts! Maybe the architect should be short-sharded and the sky should decide on another "safe word" so something like that won't cut it ever again.
Fortunately, most of the time the top third of the thing is hidden in London's murky cloud cover, so it'll probably become known as the Stump. It certainly needs surgery of some description.
It's very "shardy", jagged. Like a ragged needle injecting something into the sky. (maybe that's the cause of all the rain you've had this year)
What are those things sticking out from the building? In the 3rd photo, is that a modernistic gargoyle?
Ms.M. you may just have solved our rain problem! I'm going to petition the government to put a big rubber ball over the end so it doesn't keep poking holes in the sky.
The poky-out parts are window cleaner harnesses. They hang the working platforms from them. You'll notice one at the top of the Gherkin, too.
Not as sexy as the pickle.
Darn tootin'.
