Ms.M. These are in the Tower of London (and on Petrea's blog this very morning). They are arrow slits. Behind them is an embrasure - a splayed recess in the thick castle walls wide enough for two archers to stand side by side and to shoot in any direction, while the narrow slit makes it really tricky to hit them with return fire.
I knew IMMEDIATELY what they were because I've seen them in person! I also watch the History Channel here on the plantation, sugar! ARROW SLITS xoxoxox

I knew they were arrow slits, but it the notion of "embrasure" makes me think of a bunch of guys in Monty Python clothes spitting watermelon seeds through the slits at the attackers.
And horns! Don't forget horns - like a bunch of trumpet players loudly (how else?) tooting Fight of the Bumblebee through the slits.
I'm still numb from watching "Siegfried" last night. Four hours, when 2 would have done. Siggy and the Troll spent 90 minutes discussing their co-dependent relationship before going on to other things. Set was cool, thogh.
Wagner does tend to take every note and every line and drone on and on about them for hours. I still say the Ring cycle is three good tunes and three days of filler. Hope you enjoy your Zauberflöte this weekend!
