Petrea, it's Horseguards' Parade, between Downing Street and St.James's Park. It's where the Olympic beach volleyball events were held, but when I went past on a quick visit to my old office they were clearing up and it was raining and it all looked a little sad.
It does achieve a certain magnificence when the parade ground is filled with galloping and wheeling chargers and the gallant, sabre-toting lads of the Household Cavalry are displaying their finery for the ladies; slightly less so when it's filled with thong-clad beach-ball bouncers.
When it's empty like this it makes a fine shortcut fro Whitehall to the Park at lunchtime (I do miss working in Westminster so much … sigh).
