The Paralympics enjoy their own opening ceremony this evening and I can't wait. The city yesterday was eerily quiet, taking a last breather before another two weeks of sporting mayhem. There will be tears of joy and of anguish, records will tumble and we will cheer.
That's the Paralympic symbol adorning Tower Bridge, in case anyone was wondering.
The Paralympics have grown since coming of age so wonderfully in Sydney and this year promises to be the biggest and best ever (and certainly the best televised - we're getting the same coverage as the Olympics) After the NBC Olympic debacle I very much doubt folk in the US will get to see much of it, though it is gaining in popularity across the pond now that they've realised it's a great outlet for wounded Veteran service personnel to overcome their ordeal and shine.
Wherever you are I hope you watch as much of it as you possibly can.
I'm rooting for my own little bunch of heroes this year. Here's one of them: Martine Wright. Read her story - I insist!
If anyone doubts there are true heroes in this shitty world, read it and weep.

How that young lady has put into perspective that a lot of hard work and sheer guts can get you something from life after such a terrible trauma.
I so admire all those people that life has brought sorrow to… I do not think I would ever have been as brave as them.
Good luck to everyone showing your ability not disability.

What a moving story! and such determination. We're still in the midst of the Republican convention with more televised speeches (I'd like to be drunk for those), and we're obsessed with Hurricane Isaac. So, I'm not sure we'll get much coverage of the opening ceremonies tonight.
I realise how lucky we are over here; we get no coverage of the Republican Convention other than the fact it got a near miss from a hurricane. That's about as much Republican news as we can take.

Ok, I went looking for coverage for the Paralympics here in Indy and found none, at least for tonight. I checked the sports channels, the usual suspects of ABC, NBC and CBS and, nope, nuthin, nada. What we do have are a couple games shows, an unreality show (isn't it ironic its's called 'Big Brother') as well as America's got Talent - not. The RNC proceedings are being telecast on PBS, not even the evil Fox has gone so far as to relinquish sponsor income to shamelessly promote their ideological brethrens' meeting.
Holy crap, Speedway. I've just finished watching the opening ceremony and it knocked the Olympics into a cocked hat.

I haven't seen anything on the Paralympics except from my cousins in Golbourne. I will have to search the web. Stupid NBC and all the other "major" fooking networks.

Neetzy, the US Paralympic Team is the biggest of anybody's and is set to beat China in the medals table. I am astounded that there's no coverage of an event that will shower glory on your country's athletes.
Shame on US television.

I love that Paralympics symbol...it brought tears to my eyes.
