Not a sentence I can genuinely use every day but here are Brenda and Stavros looking as miserable as sin on their way home to the Parasite House after the Queen's Speech to Parliament yesterday.
Anyhoo …I was wending my merry way across St.James's Park on my way to the Philippines Embassy (off Trafalgar Square) for Joy's dual nationality ceremony and found I couldn't get across The Mall.
A bunch of Horseguards with fixed bayonets and some very cold and glum looking armed police were blocking my route.
Luckily I'd left the office half an hour early so I could wander and take some photos but in the end I only just made it in time.I got to hear the Band of the Horse Guards having a good old blast, though.
Which was nice.
These are the guys who were playing Elgar's Nimrod in that Remembrance Sunday video I posted.
Bloody good they were, too.
So … Next thing I know, clattering up The Mall comes the jolly Household Cavalry, which can only mean one of two things:(a) It was the annual Queen's Speech to Parliament and the mad German bint was on her way back to the Parasite House, or
(b) Her Maj had cottoned on to the fact that it was Joy's ceremony today and laid on a parade in her honour.
It turned out to be the latter, as you'll see in a minute.
Here's one for the laydees. Check out these chaps' chaps. All very splendid and jangly.
After a few phalanxes of Household Cavalry cantered past along came a couple of old duffers dressed for hunting.Nice horses, though. Very handsome.
And here comes Queenie! Here you go, Lynn. Some Queenie-porn just for you.I do hope you're standing up while you look at this … OW!
Brenda and Stavros, sharing a cab. Brenda's looking as grumpy and frumpy as she does on banknotes and stamps. But then she has just had to sit and look at the government for the past hour so it's little wonder she's none too giggly.
"Mai husband and aye … are bloody cold. I say! One of you horsy cheps run orn ahead and put the kettle orn."
No Chazza today, but the only royal I have any respect for did put in an appearance. Here's Princess Anne (of Blue Peter fame) wearing a rather fetching silly hat.
And looky! There's our Joy chatting away to her. How spiffing!
There were many other carriages full of glum-looking people but I'm not posting them all so this one will have to suffice.Once they'd gone I managed to grab a policeman and tell him I was due at the Philippines Embassy in fifteen minutes so he kindly let me across the road between yet more clattering groups of cavalry.
And I just made it. That's my rickshaw parked outside (I wish)!
Princess Anne had kindly dropped Joy off at the front door so she was already in there. The ceremony was lovely and the Philippines consul lady very polite and helpful.Joy is so lucky to have dual nationality at last. She has her full British passport and can now apply for a full Philippines one too, so when she flies to Manila for Christmas she can go through London customs using her British passport (and avoid all the queues) and go through Manila customs on her Philippines one (again, avoiding all the queues).
Cool, huh?
There are all sorts of other advantages, like property, pension and residence rights in both countries and visa exemptions for EU countries and Asian ones.
We celebrated with (of course) lunch in Green Park.Joy had promised me she'd bring some sunshine to London and she is a woman of her word. It was glorious in the park and we enjoyed lots of sushi and miso soup and green tea from Yoshino.
We also got mugged by Stumpy the tail-less squirrel but I was too busy fighting it off to take a photo.
So there you have it. A typical lunch hour for Old Dive.

Why did you have the Queen come round like this when I was in London? What excitement! Congrats on having your thumbs printed Joy; you don't get to do that every day I bet. Congratulations again, especially on that whole breeze through customs with the passport that works best thing. Oh, and I like your purse! Dive I'm glad to see Joy can bring sunshine to London too. And that bench looks awfully familiar!
Hi, Katie. That bench sure has seen some bloggers' bottoms. Hee hee.
One of the perils of working in Westminster (apart from all the horse poo everywhere) is that whenever you really have to be somewhere in a hurry all the roads are blocked off so Brenda can go out and scowl at people.
I had to think for a minute about what my "purse" might be. Of course, that's another one for our transatlantic dictionary. Joy's handbag is indeed truly awesome, but it weighed about four tons!
God job Dive, I loved seeing Joy in the company of miss Annie - or is it the other way around? Too bad she wasn't wearing a nice hat though. I suggest you work on that next time.
I'm so pleased Joy will now be able to whizz through immigration on both sides - only a fair compensation for what she suffered before.
Glad you enjoyed lunch together. It seems pretty cold to have a picnic though...
Hee hee, Nathalie; I'm not sure about Joy in a silly hat.
It wasn't that cold in the park. We were armed with miso soup and green tea to keep us warm, too.
Ooooooh! I loved it thank you! I clicked on the Queen to make her bigger and EVERYTHING! That was great. How lovely that you managed to capture her, even looking quite grim, as I agree she was indeed. Perhaps her crown was too heavy, poor love.
How clever of you to Photoshop Joy next to Princess Anne. Loved that too. That's one to send home huh Joy? Fun!
Glad you enjoyed some lunch too, with thanks to the nice policeman who saw Dive safely across the road. lol.
Thanks again Dive for my Queenly update. Yay! :) Happy girl today.
i never see herself when i'm in london! ;) xoxoxo
congratulations to joy! what a grand picnic in the park and sun makes it even better!
Lynn: I am happy to oblige.
It's amazing the things you see in London when you've not got a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with you but it was lunchtime so I'd gone out unarmed and so you still have a monarch.
Hee hee.
She was indeed looking pretty grim, but having just had to put up with Black Rod's yelling and banging and then sit on that uncomfortable throne thing to make her speech I'm not really surprised.
Besides, the sun hadn't got out then and it was still bitterly cold. I doubt that carriage has much in the way of heating and she is after all an old lady, so she was probably dying to get back to the Parasite House for a wee and a cuppa and a nice bum-warming session in front of the fire.
They were rattling along at quite a clip, cantering rather than walking, which is why I only managed to get one decent shot.
You'll have to take a day off this time next year and come and stand in St.James's Park with your camera.
Savannah: Would you really want to?
The picnic was lovely; Joy brought the sun out and it took the chill off the air. Plus, we had warming soup with our sushi.
xoxoxo
Oooh I'd love to, Dive. It's years and years since I did that. I have old photos of most of them, including Diana, but there's nothing like an up to date one, so thank you again. Thank goodness for you and your camera in London. She is an old lady, it's true, and Prince Phillip is even older I think so yes I'd imagine the royal wees were in demand lol! Black Rod is always a fascinating thing to see and of course I watched it all on the news as usual! Didn't quite seem the same to have a woman shout out "Please close the door!" though. What do you think? Terribly sexist, I know, but to me it should have been a blokie voice.
Yay for Joy!
We have a tailless squirrel here, but it's name is Squirrelfriend, so called by a boy across the street.
Why does the princess dress like a prince?
Love your handbag by the way, Joy. I am coveting it.
LOL Scout! he he I know what you mean though. I believe it is because she is Colonel of the Blues & Royals, so she is entitled to wear her uniform.
Lynn: I'm kind of used to women screaming orders at me so it was no problem.
You keep up with the Court and Social pages so you're likely to know when Brenda's going to be riding up and down The Mall; choose a day when the weather is warmer and I'll meet you in the park for lunch and a bit of Queen spotting.
Robyn: this tailless squirrel was one of those nasty, aggressive types that claw their way up your leg, leap on your lunch and then bite you for your troubles. He took some getting rid of.
Lynn: Everybody loves that handbag. Perhaps when she gets back from work Joy can tell us all where she got it.
I thought Anne dressed like a man because she's kinda butch. I've always liked her no-nonsense, jeans and lumberjack shirt, swearing like a trooper attitude.
The hat was very Prussian and silly but I suppose as the Blues and Royals were providing her escort it would be rude not to wear it.
Dear UK blogger,
This post, though fabulous, confuses my little untraveled brain. Is Brenda a drag queen Elizabeth impersonator? A doppleganger? Why is Joy with royalty? I want to be a citizen too if I get to ride around with the Queen and her court. Did you photoshop that? Who is Anne? Help?
signed,
Bemused and Befuddled
Hee hee, Shan!
Dear Bemused and Befuddled,
Brenda is what Private Eye (our satirical magazine) calls the Queen. They use euphemistic names for people (a leftover from "olden days" when folk were even more litigious than today); Charles and Diana were "Brian and Cheryl", etc.
Joy had a lovely ride. We Brits are all invited to ride around in royal carriages whenever we're in London.
Anne is Princess Anne, the only royal with a sense of humour. She's Brenda's second eldest after Brian (Charles) and before Edward the pantomime dame.
I do hope this has helped clear things up.
Best regards
UK Blogger.
Ms. Joy is aptly named. Would you not agree Dive? I propose a "Hip, Hip, Hurray" in honor of a fine gal and a new citizen of the UK. The UK is now a better place.
Great photos of the Royalty. I do enjoy the pomp even though they seem to overdue it a bit.
The PBS TV channel is running a special series on the daily life of the Royal Family. Its called "Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work." They dont actually do much work. Lots of ceremonies, royal dinners, lunches etc. The Queen did make a trip to the US a few years ago. They put her up in a very fancy B&B. There was a list of items that the Queen required a mile long. One item was that the Queen's bathroom MUST have a new toilet installed and all of the towels must be new and washed four times. The Queen lives good.
Hey you guys! Thanks for all your kind words. I've only one hurdle left - get my new Filipino passport while I'm in Manila this December.
Dive didn't believe me a couple of months back when I said it'll be sunny when I go down to London for my dual citizenship. I hope I have made a believer in him now!
I enjoy riding carriages - providing the horses are well. Annie was chatting away about the whole ceremony. I told her I had everything sorted. :D
Lunch was delish! Loved the unagi and loads of Japanese dessert.
As for the bag, I loooove it, too! So girls, come to Norwich and I'll show you where I got it.
Thanks for a fab post, Dive! But more fab was the lovely lunch and the company.
I note that the sun came out for Joy but not for the Queen. Don't those people ever go anywhere in normal cars? They must have been freezing. Like Lynn, I enjoy a bit of royalty porn now and then.
I've seen the Benauts on that bench, too, haven't I? And Katie?
Good for you, Joy. Congratulations.
Thank you, Dive, this is delightful.
Mark: Joy is very aptly named. She is a great and true friend.
As you know I am a rabid anti-royalist but you can't avoid the Parasite Monarchy when you work in Westminster so I have to put up with them.
Our Lynn is the complete opposite so I do like to post the odd royal photo for her. And to wind her up, of course.
A little while back someone found a pubic hair on a toilet seat after the Queen had used it and sold it on eBay. The world's a funny old place sometimes.
Hi, Joy!
Thanks so much for inviting me to your ceremony. It was great fun and I am honoured.
And yes, I now believe you can conjure up the sunshine at will.
I'm glad you sorted out Princess Anne. I do apologise on her behalf as she swears even more than I do.
I showed Mayuko the photos of our day out and our lunch and she was most jealous, but the thing she said first was "Where did she get that wonderful handbag?"
Hee hee.
It was indeed a lovely lunch and the company was excellent … apart from Stumpy the overaggressive squirrel!
Hi, Petrea! Thank you.
The Queen is always so grumpy that the sun hides from her.
And yes, they drive big old black Bentleys around the place with lots of stupid police motorcycle escorts, but for official ceremonies she uses the carriage.
That bench has seen many a blogger's bottom; you're welcome to come and join me there whenever you are over on this side of the world.
he he I'm wound up in the best way possible, Dive!
I'm very touched that you would actually Queen-spot just because I like it. I really am. I'm sure it's the last thing you'd like to do. I can't wait! I do indeed read the court and social page!
It's also quite fitting, I think, that my middle name is Cheryl. lol! You couldn't make it up.
Thank you, Dive. I accept. I'll stop and pick up Lynn on the way and we'll all park ourselves there and watch for Brenda.
Oh what a fabulous post today Dive. I love all that pomp and ceremony and the horses and carriages are so beautiful. They may be relics of another era but they're "our" relics of history so like Lynn no doubt, I'm sitting here lapping it all up.
Joy: congratulations!
I agree with Mme. I love all the horses and carriages and pomp! The horses are pretty. They are sooo much better than impersonal motorcades. Queen Brenda eh? Thanks for explaining that to Shan. (Thanks Shan for asking)! I guessed Brenda was the queen from your context but was not quite sure.
Wow. That is a lot of FUSS for one woman.
And I am so jealous that you were able to dine in a park!! The high was 12 degrees here today. With a bitey old wind...
A pubic hair from the Queen you say? Sold on Ebay? That may be the funniest thing I have ever heard. Would that make it a "Royal" pubic hair? I guess it would. Dive, You slay me. I may not quit laughing till tomorrow.
Here, one has to go to the theatre in order to see old queens strut their stuff.
Lynn: Oh, my! Cheryl! Your ex's name wasn't Brian, by any chance was it? That would be too much of a coincidence.
Petrea: The two of you will need to bring earplugs to keep out my sweary grumbling about the Parasites.
Mme: I cannot avoid horses in Westminster. Right next door to the office is the barracks of the Military Police with their stables, we have the Household Cavalry and the Horse Guards just around the corner and of course the Metropolitan Police are mounted and ride around in pairs. There are never too many minutes going by without hearing the clip clop of hooves outside the office and of course the smeared poo-line along each lane of the road outside.
Maria: It was just above freezing but there was no wind and the sun made it almost pleasant. We picnic fans are very hardy.
Mark: It was a couple of years ago in one of those events where there are rows of portaloos. The Queen of course had her own loo set up in an enclosure and it would appear the people who provide these things were not quite so discreet as she would have liked.
It gave us all a few giggles when the news leaked out.
Lucio: Over here it is the clubs on Rose Lane where the old queens strut their stuff.
Well I am not amused - not even a Queenly wave or even a sneer - just ignoring all her loyal subjects - how typical!!!
Well done Joy and welcome to the Commonwealth I think it means we are now related!!!!
The squirrel was cute, but gave me a fright when I saw his tail. It's been sharply cut! Poor thing. It bugs Dive because he wouldn't share his food.
Tell Mayuko to come to Norwich. It's only half an hour away :D And I'll take her to the shop. But I should warn her, there are just so many delicious things at that shop. So either bring heaps of cash or plastic - or keep to a budget.
Thanks, Jules!
"Smeared poo-line..." It sounds like London retains its ancient character of yester-year.
I can't speak for Lynn, but I think I'll enjoy your sweary grumblings, Dive.
This great stuff, dive. Just your typical lunch hour eh? I want one of those.
Thanks for the picture of the band, Dive, you know I like that one. Christmas caroling season has started (brrr), and those big furry hats and greatcoats look just the job.
Jules: Joy will be "down your way" soon. She's spending Christmas just across the sea in Manila.
Am I jealous of either of you?
Er … YES!
Joy: Stumpy was pretty scary, wasn't he?
I think you'll have to fess up which shop you got the bag at so everyone can go there.
Petrea: London does indeed retain a certain mediæval poo-scent at times, especially when the wind blows from the stables next door into my office.
Rich: Some lunchtimes are just surreal.
Hi, Pea! Thank you again for my lovely prezzie. And yes, those greatcoats look snug and warm in this bitter weather. Tis a busy season for you brassy folk. I hope you get to do more indoor concerts than outdoor. Brr!
Dive, do you work near her majes--er, I mean, uh, Brenda's stables?
LOL no Dive he wasn't. I can't think of a Brian I know apart from worky people. Shame isn't it. I may have to go looking for one... he he.
Charles & Camilla refer to themselves as Fred & Gladys of course. Gosh they're all incognito.
Petrea, I work next door to the stables and barracks for the military police; the royal stables are just around the corner so yes, it can get pretty horsey when the wind's in the wrong direction.
Lynn: I really think you shoud hunt yourself down a Brian.
