Thank goodness for Maria. She rides to my rescue again, armed with yet another meme to cure my bloggers' block.
The Alphabet Meme.
A is for your age:
Forty-nine.
Shit!
B is for your burger of choice:
Gack!
I've never been in (let alone put into my mouth) a Mc.D. Or a KFC or a Pizza Hut or any other junk food craporium and I never will.
So "burger of choice" would be "none".
C is for the car that you drive:
Small. Black. Cute. Sexy.
D is for dog's name:
I'm a dogless person so I'll choose my favourite blog-dog: Hassan's wonderful, übercute eater of Savannah's glasses (twice), Ghostface Killah.
E is for an essential item you use each day:
The Interweb.
F is for your favourite television show:
I don't do telly.
I do, however, have a bunch of DVDs of shows I watch on my Mac.
From the States: Frasier, The Simpsons, Buffy.
From the UK: Black Books, Green Wing, Phoenix Nights.
Choose from one of those.
G is for favourite game:
Usually chess, though Scrabble if I'm feeling pedantic and I want to yell at stupid people.
Oh, and GTA4 when I get home from a shitty commute … There are times when one simply has no option but to tool up and gun the fuck out of the world.
H is for hometown:
Imtarfa in Malta, according to my birth certificate, but I don't remember it. My current hometown is anywhere with no mobile phone reception.
I is for instruments played:
Everything except the oboe.
I can't raise a squeak out of one of those fuckers, even with Dizzy Gillespie cheeks.
I don't think anyone can actually play the oboe; they're just faking it. They sit there and mime while somebody under their chair squeezes farts out of a rat.
Any oboe players out there want to give me a clue how to get the stupid thing started?
J is for favourite juice:
Why, lady-juice of course.
Hee hee … OW!
K is for what you'd like to kick:
Everything and everybody.
Hard!
L is for last restaurant you dined at:
The new Wasabi that just opened on Victoria Street in Westminster. Andy treated me as thanks for teaching him how to cheat at work.
M is for your favourite Muppet:
Beaker.
Suave, sophisticated. I model my dating technique on him.
N is for number of piercings you have:
None.
I have sufficient holes in my body, thank you very much. They cause enough trouble as it is.
O is for overnight hospital stays:
Sheesh. Er … One biggie when my appendix burst and I got peritonitis. That was a whole bunch of no fun.
And several more for various things. I'm too old to remember most of them.
P is for people you were with today:
The usual idiots on the train.
The usual idiots on the tube.
The usual idiots in the office.
Nathalie in the deli.
Q is for what you do in quiet times:
Read. Chill. Vegetate. Concentrate really hard on trying to grow fins.
R is for regrets:
Holy crap! I have the world's largest collection of regrets. I manage to pick up several new ones every day.
Let's just say "life."
S is for status:
Fat, ugly, balding, middle-aged sad bastard who lives alone and is likely to stay that way.
T is for time you woke up today:
Don't remind me.
4:40AM as usual; just before the alarms start shrieking at me.
U is for what you consider unique:
My cheery, optimistic view of the universe and my deep love of the people in it.
V is for favourite vegetable:
I kinda like Keira Knightley.
W is for your worst habit:
Blogging. Or kidding myself that one day a woman will find me attractive enough not to point and laugh.
X is for x-rays you have had:
I think I've managed to collect the whole set over the decades.
Y is for yummy food you ate today:
It's not lunchtime yet, so fat all. Today, it'll be a toss up between sashimi and seafood noodles; depends on which places have the shortest queues.
Z is for zodiac sign:
I don't do star signs.
What month is the sign of the Grumpy Old Fucker? That'll be me.

What fun to wake up to your alphabet. Having a good laugh before I even get out of bed makes it so much easier to get up and face the day. Especially knowing that my commute is a breeze compared to yours. Hope you got some cake today to sweeten things up a bit!
Even better than cake, I got sashimi! Yum!
Good morning, Katie.
It is mid afternoon here and rainy.
My dashboard Golden Gate Bridge-cam shows me that it's a beautiful morning on your side of the world.
Enjoy!
Keira Knightly huh? So, did you come across her in a magazine or at the movies? I rather like her too.
I think waking up at 4.40 am is just plain cruel. We have to sleep in here because the sun doesn't come up over the trees until about 9.00 am at this time of year.
I think we have a really good ABC song that I might email to you, if I can find it on M.B's computer. lol
I really have no idea who she is other than someone next to me was watching Atonement on a laptop on the train the other day and I remember waking up and glancing across and thinking "My goodness! Just look at those nipples!"
Is there any such thing as a really good ABC song, Mme? Damn! Now I've got "Poison Arrow" stuck on my mind.
Hmm, sashimi better than cake? Why not both??
It's too funny that before opening my curtains to see what the weather's going to be like today, I can find out from you that's it's a beautiful morning in the San Francisco area. Gotta love the internet! At work I have bookmarked a webcam for a beach in Greece! I've never even been there, but it's where I often want to go when work is sucking. Sorry you're dealing with rain. But hey, it's almost the weekend for you and I still have to go to work!
Sashimi and cake, eh?
A somewhat … er … curious combination, Katie!
Not that I'm jealous of where you live (HA!), but the two webcams I have on my dashboard are
(a) The Golden Gate Bridge looking north and
(b) A cam on a pier in Sausalito looking toward the City.
Oh! While we're on the subject, would you be so kind as to set me straight on something?
Here in London, Berkely Square is pronounced "Bark-ley". You live in the Colonial version; do you say "Bark-ley" or "Berk-ley"?
Enjoy your day's work; I'll be heading home across the city in an hour (hee hee).
late night, late morning, sugar...great meme to start the day, sugar! thanks...re berk-ley in the states..unless of course you're singing a gerswhin tune ;-)
HA! Squeezing farts out of a rat! Thanks for the visual Dive! I will think of that every time I hear the oboe now! I like the oboe though...rat farts and all.
I love your view of the world Dive - you definitely brighten up my day!
Have a great weekend!
Sometimes I enjoy a smattering of julienned Keira Knightly atop a nice bed of linguini. Oh no, I'm thinking of zucchini.
Actually the chopping I'd like to do on Keira is an osteotomy on her lower jaw. As an ex-dental surgery assistant, all I can see is her little bull dog chin jutting out at the opposing on screen hunk. So distracting. I guess you wouldn't notice THAT where you were looking though, eh Dive?
As for your non veg choices, that's the stuff I'd point and laugh at (well, that and your Frasierism's). All that seafood business is best left in the aquarium if you ask me. Eeew. Didn't you say you ate shrimp flavored Pringles once? And squid sticks or something? I point and grimace at those.
Now I even sound grumpy. Oh well, it's raining here so it suits the mood. ;)
Thanks, Savannah. I've always wondered about that pronunciation.
Very strange.
Shazza: I tried and tried to get the oboe to squeak at school but it just sat there, grinning and mocking me.
If you've never tried one, give it a go. It's a fun way to drive yourself crazy.
Shan: Yes, I'm afraid after a lifetime of vegetarianism I succumbed at last to the joys of raw and wriggly marine life.
I still don't eat land animals or birds unless I'm round Phil's (he only uses organic so it's not like I'm munching chemicals and drugs), but point me at a live octopus and I'm a happy man. Yum!
Hee hee.
You need an embouchure to get a tune out of an oboe.
That's a vegetable isn't it?
Was it in GQ magazine where you came across Keira Knightly? (G'ack F'nar)
Snickering wickedly at "lady juice".....
I so love your memes - they make my day.
Your car intrigues me - cute, black sexy - sounds like mine - Ford Laser hatch-back!!!!
Thanks Savannah for offering up the correct pronunciation of Berkeley, since I was busy at work all day! Sometimes people call it "Berzerkeley" but not so much anymore since there are fewer hippies and more expensive homes here than in the 60s. I guess someone from Texas might pronounce it "Bark-ley" though.
Classic that you have both a Golden Gate cam and a Sausalito cam looking toward SF. If you want a great view that includes all of these views at once, check out http://sv.berkeley.edu/view/ which is a camera located just up the hill from where I live. They have the current view, as well as yesterday's Timelapse Movie, which is really cool. If you think it's sunny in CA all the time, click on the Archives and watch the "A full day of rainstorms" timelapse.
I know you "don't do telly" but I bet you'd get hooked on The Weather Channel if given the chance. Mainly I like watching it in the winter so I can laugh at my friends back in Minnesota suffering through yet another horrible storm (says I who woke up at 2 am today thinking I just dreamed my bed was totally from an earthquake, only to hear on the radio later that there actually was a little earthquake in Berkeley at 2 am).
Let's make that "bed was totally shaking due to an earthquake"
Phil: Nope; that's brass. For oboe, you need to be a twelve-foot lungfish with the lips of a giant clam (to wrap around that pesky double reed).
I'm still convinced that oboe players mime. There's NO WAY that you can get air into the thing! Have a go.
Here's a challenge to all of you.
Get an oboe to make a sound other than the squeak of a dying shrew. I defy you to make it sound like an oboe.
Maria: Mmmmmmm … Yummy stuff, eh? Better than a smoothie any day!
Jules: We don;t have Ford Lasers over here. Is that one of the Aussie Fords? They're weird!
Katie: Woohoo! And wow, too!
I've just watched yesterday's movie and I have GOT to move to San Francisco.
As for a day of rainstorms; well, I can sit and watch that live most days in England.
The earthquake! Cool! I followed the earthquake link on the cam website and it showed me all about it.
I have a realtime earthquake monitor on my desktop but it's set to magnitude 5 and over, so mostly it just shows Jules getting shaken up a couple of times a week.
I also have weather widgets (as well as clocks) for all of my blogpals (if you're familiar with the thing called the "dashboard" on a Mac then you'll know just how messy mine looks), so I can keep an eye on you. Sad but true.
I've only ever felt two minor tremors that I'm aware of.
Did you ever read Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy books? People had custom made planets built. The one that always appealed to me was a "soft rubber planet with plenty of earthquakes".
Fun!
M.B and I experienced an earthquake when we were in Bali. All of the hotel staff ran outside but since we were in bed already, we just stayed there; smirking and asking one another if the earth had moved for them. Hee, hee. This is the sort of thing that honeymoons are made of.
BTW, M.B is going to send you the ABC song since it's on his computer but he's in the middle of translating so it might be a little bit longer. I think you will like it ... LOL; especially if you were attracted to Keira's nipples or even just the mere mention of them.
Hee hee, Mme!
As for the Knightley nipples, they were there when I woke up on the train and opened my eyes. I didn't go looking for them.
You answer to N has the potential to be gross, but I LOVE Beaker. He really is so interesting and suave, as you've said. What a guy.
I can't get noise out of an oboe either. I tried learning the bagpipes once and had the same trouble.
Bagpipes are quite easy to get noise out of, but very difficult to get "listenable" noise out of.
