Like Father, Like Son

Yet more unashamed wallowing in the past, courtesy of Mme. Benaut's wonderful post about herself and her mother.

So … Dad and me.
Apologies to mum and Phil for getting left out of this one but (a) it's a "dad and me" post to complement Mme. B's "mum and me" post, and (b) you both have stacks of humiliating and awful photos of me so I have to be careful what I post about you (dammit) and while dad's carousing in the Halls of Valhalla, he doesn't have access to a scanner.

So … Let's start in 1956.
Katie noted yesterday that dad was "very stylish".
Well here he is modelling the latest accessories for the man about Malta in the fifties.
Fifty years ahead of his time with the "manbag".

And here's dad and me back in '58 (or thereabouts).

Yesterday's cleaned up shot.
That's Mdina behind him and the Mediterranean in the distance.
It's all high-rise and hotels now, but if you look closely you can see a horse and cart in the middle distance on the left.

When Elvis ruled the world.
I love this photo.

Of course, dad wasn't the only stylish man-about-town in the family …
This is me hanging about for him outside the fire station where he was a volunteer fireman.

How cute was I back then?

Screw you guys; I'm going home.

Like father, like son.

Er … Like father, like son.
Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Better days, with Ana in Portugal.

Dad as Buddha.

Yeah, I miss him. We had some good times. That's as much as you can ask.

That's a lovely tribute to your Dad, old son.
He'd be proud to know how much pleasure he gave you and how you revere the good old days with him.

You probably could even find some of those old 78's somewhere in an attic, I bet.

I think many of us have a similar idea in our heads now. It's just a case of finding all the memorabilia.

Thank you for the privilege of sharing your memories.

I know exactly where those 78s are, Monsieur. A classic collection of early rock and roll and swing including Elvis' "That's Alright, Mama" on Sun; one of my favourites when I was a kid.
You can thank Mme for the post inspiration, Monsieur. I think it must be your turn to do one now. Hee hee.

What a great tribute, Dive! He was indeed a dapper man.

Great job cleaning up the photo, too, I'm impressed.

Dapper! Hee hee. What a lovely word. Thank you, Robyn.

And thanks for the Photoshop compliment. Coming from a Jedi Master of Photoshop such as yourself that is praise indeed.

Those do seem like wonderful memories Dive. I can see the resemblance big time in your profiles. Did he give you and Full your Frasier qualities or was he more like the sensible voice in the room trying to get a moment's peace in his tacky chair. Probably not that last part given his stylishness. ;)

Hee hee, Shan. Dad was definitely an influence!

Lynn and Savannah: Thank you both. I'm glad we had such a good time together.

Now you know EXACTLY how you are going to age. He was a fine looking fella, dive.

Everyone tells me how much I look like my mother and it pains me. I WANT to look like my Da instead. But...there are times when I catch a glimpse of myself (especially when I am grumpy) and I am STUNNED at how I resemble her.

And what a cut little tyke you were with your tam.

Hee hee, Maria.
You are so right.
I had that beard ever since college and only shaved it off when I passed forty, curious as to what I might actually look like.
The sheer shock when I looked in the mirror and saw my dad looking back almost knocked me flat on my butt!
We all turn into our parents.
Sigh …

What fun to see these photos! The B&W ones really give the sense of a whole different era. You as a youngster walking away from the camera is a hoot. But my favorite is the one of you and your dad in the swimming pool. Just makes me smile. Thanks for sharing these!

Fabulous. A serious looking young man looks like he really enjoyed his older life. You as a youngster do look good enough to eat and your mother's flair is quite apparent in the way she has dressed you. I love the hands folded behind your back.
Ana in Portugal. She was YOUR Ana? She's very pretty. I think you look much nicer clean shaven; it's just tidier, I think.
We don't have a scanner yet and most of M.B's old photos are still in boxes somewhere - even I haven't seen them. He's not one to be rushed you know.
Thank you for showing us these wonderful photos and the memories attached to them. Helps me to get to the "heart" of he who is our much-loved Dive.

Very touching post dive. Great photos and I feel that I've met the family.

You are all too kind.
Mme: Mum will be so pleased with you for noticing. She was always very fussy about the way she dressed us (much to our grumpy resentment as little boys who liked nothing better than scuffing the knees out of our trousers).

Wow...that was beautiful Dive. I got all teary eye over here in my little part of the world.

Thank you so much for sharing!

Your dad was so handsome, Dive.
You have that to look forward to.

Wait...that makes it sound like you're not already handsome.

That isn't what I meant. I just mean, you'll age well. Like fine wine.

Shit, now it sounds like I'm hitting on you.
