Then drive back again.

What? You were sent off to check THAT? Couldn't they just as easily have sent an image via e-amil or set up a Skype connection? Or was your presence required in order to verify that an actual hole had actually been dug at the actual site?
There was a lot of standing around in the snow and a lot of sitting around in a freezing tin hut, drinking crap coffee and arguing about contract law. The hole was the high point. If anyone tells you they want to be an architect, point them at me and I'll make damned sure they run away screaming.
Or wide awake and wishing the wind would stop howling and that I could afford to repair my boiler so it's not too noisy to have on at night. Roll on spring, Ms.M.
We did, Petrea: the site is a second world war airfield and the place is full of unexploded ordnance, so digging holes is fun. We found one particularly large readout from the ground-penetrating radar survey and dug down carefully with the bomb disposal squad in close proximity only to find it was a bomb crater that the airfield personnal had used as a tip for all their wrecked junk (cookers, twisted metal plane parts, etc.) and then filled in.

Well, "e-amil" was another fat-fingered mistake, but checking on those little rectangular holes seems just e-anal.
