As for the script; it may be Cyrillic but it's Ancient Greek rather than Russian. It's not modern Greek, either (in case anyone was was tempted to feed it into Babel Fish); the exclamation of joy and relief related by Xenophon as the ten thousand caught sight of the sea has since been softened to thalassa, thalassa. Ooooh, I do love alliteration.
Mum, the speed of the rip tide in Sole Bay is nicely demonstrated by the "wake" of the groyne marker (and the oblique waves in the last photo). NOT a wise place to go swimming unless you want to end up miles out to sea.

I counted 2 sparkley bits then got pixilated when I enlarged it.
