More Dumb Weather

The best thing to do when the temperatures climb high into the eighties at the arse end of September is get out of the office and find a pavement café somewhere out of the sun.
Usually in England the few tables you see outside cafés are there to catch the rain or to attract visiting Norwegians who find that the ice forming on top of their coffees reminds them of home.

Yesterday it was too hot to eat more than a prawn and avocado doorstep (the two gay gals who run this café sure know how to make a proper sarnie - fresh-baked, hand-cut bread stuffed with high fat goodness) but I'm making the most of it as this is England and tomorrow it might snow.

New phrases: pavement cafe, doorstep, sarnie.

In the States: those would be sidewalk cafe and sandwich. (doorstep is sandwich, I assume from the picture—I know that's what a sarnie is). Weird.

Hmm, the doorstep seems to be the proportions of the half-sandwich. But the headline, "Universities still failing poor students," is disconcerting. Well, doh. Isn't that their job? How does that happen? Do you have the English version of "No Child Left Behind" policies over there? Or are they referring to the less financially well-off students?

You thought that was good Dive.. your Mum has been with Auntie Jan and had fish and chips and sat on Southwold common...and do not ask who has blistered feet! We parked by the pier!!

Robyn, they are old and hoary phrases. A doorstep is a thick, hand-cut sarnie, as inelegant as the big fat stone doorsteps we used to have and utterly delicious.

Speedway, the Tories are bringing American-style profiteering to the English educational system. We used to have guaranteed free education for all but some imbecile has decided to let universities start charging fees so we're back to the right-wingers' ideal of a two-tier system: one rule for the rich and one for the rest of us.
Scotland is still holding out with free university education so if I had kids I'd move up there.

Mum, it's about time you two started walking again. Stop moaning and get your marching boots on! Hup-two, hup-two!

Now that is a proper doorstep. And congratulations on the superb choice of filling.

I know you're enjoying the hot weather really.

Talking of fillings, this lunchtime I had a granary bap stuffed full of tuna, salad, red onions, black olives, sliced egg and beetroot. When you get a craving there's no point not satisfying it.
And yes, you're right as ever. Hee hee.

Hope you enjoyed the cigar.

It was strangely chocolatey.

It was damn near 90 here today, but tonight it will drop to the upper 50's and then, we'll be looking at 40's and 50's at night for the next week! I'm tired of summer anyway. It will be nice to not have to drink the air! xoxoxox

I'm going to "judge you by your labels" and ask, you had a tuna-filled BAP for lunch!? Cannibal!

Poor Dive, that looks just miserable.

Savannah, you guys get scary amounts of humidity down there. We English constantly moan about the weather but in reality we've got nothing much to complain about. xoxoxox

Speedway, that's a truly disturbing thought. But hey, why stop at silicone for breast enhancements? Why not keep your lunch in there?

It's a tough life, Petrea.

Fun to learn new words from your world. I'd love a sandwich--or sarnie like that! Can't beat prawn and avocado! I am sorry to read that universities are still failing poor students though. Tough having a grading curve based on income ;)

Prawn and avocado is a yummy combination, Ms.M.
The Tories are our version of a kind of "Republican-Lite" party; the party of the rich, the bankers and their cronies. As soon as they got into power (not by people wanting them, but by the collapse of the other major party) they tried to privatise everything that makes England a green and pleasant land: health, education, public sector workers - and they vowed to exempt the country from the European Commission for Human Rights so that they can change employment legislation and take away workers' rights.
Please don't get me started on them … I'm in too good a mood to get all angry and sweary.
