However, I do have to pander to a mostly Colonial readership and picturing them staring blankly at their monitors, searching the photos in vain for signs of ladies' headgear is a mental image too pitiful to bear for a man of my generous disposition.

A hood is some species of headgear or a famous British battleship.
What you have there is a bonnet. (Coincidentally also headgear).
I get enough of this at work with people referring to hoods and fenders (these are guitars not parts of car bodywork), they are bonnets and wings.
Sorry about the rant but you'll be calling engines "motors" next. Please stay this side of the Atlantic.

Yup, sometimes I have to pander to the Colonial contingent to make myself understood. The sooner they actually learn the English language over there, the sooner pigs will fill the skies.
Gee, thanks, Dive. Some of us translate as we go along as we are bilingual. But a "bonnet" implies foo-foo ruffles and big bows, as in "sissy." A "hood," I think would imply something hidden, so as to surprise with its power at opportune moments. So why would a 12-cylinder engine need to hide under a foo-foo party hat?
It depends on the car, Speedway. A Shelby or a Chevy has a hood but a Jaguar, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati or a Lotus has a bonnet.
Oh, and Ford GT40s, too, as they were designed and built in England.
Actually, those are mid-engined so I suppose it would be a cowling (which sounds something like a small cow).
It's as true as it ever was that we're two nations divided by a single language.
Interesting terminology differences. Bonnet/hood I've come across, but not wing/fender.
That said, you've got some fine photos there of engines/motors.

Mark, I never understood why the Colonies chose to drive on the right. Our driving on the left is a hangover from charioteering days; keep your sword arm free to attack the guy coming the other way. It's much more fun. The Japanese do it, the English do it - it's a fine tradition of ancient, sword-happy, warrior cultures.
