Apropos Obama's immanent inauguration, does anyone else feel that his retracing of Lincoln's train journey to Washington is a case of semiological overkill? Don't get me wrong, I enthusiastically approve of his election - I just think a little more originality is in order for someone so keen to promote change.
Yes, Lucio. I've been watching the tv coverage of Obama's train trip all day (while doing other things), but I'm afraid that by the time Tuesday comes, I'll have burnt out. I may have to take a 2-day hiatus and come back on Tuesday.
I suppose you're right, Lucio, but we're so weary of the previous "occupant" and so excited for the new president it may be hard for you to imagine. I don't know about other towns but in my town there will be parties all over the place on Tuesday. I'm having one and have received several invitations. I haven't seen this much excitement for an inauguration in my lifetime.
I see Katherine's noticed the excitement building. Any other Yanks here notice it in their locales?
Petrea: No, I get the universal euphoria - it's the historical reprise that surprises me. There's nothing wrong with it (or unexpected, given Obama's adoration of Lincoln), but I would like to have seen him mark the transition to the new America with a more original gesture. Then again, it's not for me, an Australian, to cast aspersions on his political savvy, which is considerable.
Let's hope the next 4-8 years sees a turn around in the fortunes of your country!

I keep thinking that there is going to be some sort of terrorist attack on Monday, because they KNOW that this is their last chance to do it while there is an idiot at the helm.
