To Goodwood House, home of Lord March, patron of vintage and modern motorsport.
This isn't the Revival Meeting, where we dress up in period costume and watch racing drivers thrash the shit out of priceless vintage cars (that's in September … look out for more car porn then); no, this is the Goodwood Festival Of Speed; a more up-to-date affair, featuring today's top racing drivers and racing cars and sporting supercars from around the world, tearing up the infamous Goodwood Hillclimb course.
This is Phil, modelling a rather heavy sculpture of Marge Simpson's hairnet. And that's Andy with his back to us, trying to figure out how they drove those Land Rovers up there.
Some of you may recognise this little cutie as being one of the toys from Phil's Magical Kingdom.Well, today it is here to be raced … With Phil in it …
Enough teasing.
This week will see a multi-post car porn extravaganza, culminating in Phil's hair-raising race, where he was joined by everyone from Sir Stirling Moss, through a bunch of top Formula 1 drivers to TV race-girl Vicki Butler-Henderson (racing the Tesla electric sports car; another of Phil's toys) and überbabe model and race nut Jodie Kidd, who tore up the hill just after Phil in her Maserati (that girl can DRIVE).
We had a rather splendid time.

bring it on, sugar, *swooning* this made me forget my blues! (which is becoming harder and harder to do these days) xoxoxox
I can't wait to see more photos and hear about Phil's race! Oh to be Jodie Kidd chasing men in a Maserati. Where do I sign up for that gig?? Cool that there was a Tesla! That's a SF Bay Area company as I'm sure you know. They make fabulous looking electric cars, that's for sure. Generally I'm not a huge car nut, but cool looking sports cars really start my engine!
Ah, those blues, Savannah. One day soon they'll be history.
In the meantime, I'll do my best to entertain you with … er … car porn this week.
xoxoxox
The more girls who race cars, the happier I'll be, Katie.
Check out the "Phil's Magical Kingdom" link to see where the Teslas are born and bred (here in Norfolk, naturally) before final assembly in California (Phil turned down a job there, for which I'll never forgive him … hee hee).
That looks like a lot of fun--and I am also baffled by that sculpture.
They build a huge, car-based sculpture every year and this year was the fiftieth birthday of Land Rover, the go-anywhere, mountain-climbing car, so they built this thing and then had mountaineers clambering over it all day.
Weird.
The artist is Gerry Juddah. Weird is good.
Indeedy.
He always seems to come up with something startling and different.
And fun!
I can almost feel the speed in that last photo, dive. I wouldn't want to hit that wall.
glad you had a fun time!
Will that be the sculpture's permanent installation or will it be dismantled?
Madge's hairnet huh? Very neat and I'm with Andy - how did they drive those cars up there?
Good for Phil! I hope he won. Every time I drive fast, M.B tells me to slow down. Ok, I'm the lead foot in the family. I'd love to race a Maserati too - see, I know how to spell it so I'm sure I could drive it. Fast.
Rich: That wall is truly scary, even standing next to it!
T: The sculptures are dismantled after each show. This one took two months to erect!
Mme: A LeMans driver in the Jaguar GT1 car posted the fastest time of the day (more later).
Glad to hear you're a leadfoot! Hoorah!
It's a pity you aren't coming over here in September; we could have dressed you up in fifties chic and taken you and Monsieur to the Revival Meeting.
I think maybe they should be dismantled and then re-erected on the Queen's front lawn in the middle of the night.
Can't you just see her coming out in the morning to get her paper, tea and ciggy in hand, and then...bam! she catches sight of that bad boy and drops dead from the shock.
What would you call your post that day?
I'm not sure, T … I think I prefer her to Chazza and the Camel … or (God forbid) the Nazi runts Diana spawned.
Kill' em all! That's my advice.
Oh, I have been just waiting to find the time/energy to come visit and it looks like it will be FUN.
