Goodwood has something for everybody (or at least every kind of car nut).
About a mile's trudge up a very steep hill brings us to the forest rally stage, where the cream of the world's rally drivers (actually, most of them are Norwegian or Finnish, the rest of the world seems not so disposed toward suicidal insanity) were having a bit of fun.
There's no possible way to type the noise of a rally car tearing off the start line in a cloud of gravel and dust, so I won't try. It's a bloody good noise, though!
Of course it never all goes quite to plan.An exceedingly expensive little prang on the priceless vintage Lancia.
Oops!
For those of the non-gravelly persuasion, here's a taste of things to come later in the week:
Sir Stirling Moss fiddles with his … ahem … helmet at the start line for the hill climb. The man is a true God of racing.
Leaning out of the window of her Maserati and chatting to the other drivers as they pass (yes, Phil got a wave and a smile) the world's only supermodel with balls: race queen extraordinaire and lead-footed maniac überbabe, Jodie Kidd.
Yum …

A forest rally is a great idea, although I'm sure the trees were actually screaming in terror. Looks like fun, Dive. And yes, I do have a soul. hee hee
The surgeon general warned that driving cigarette cars can be bad for their health and sure enough...it ends up getting a part lopped off while still in it's prime.
Glad you had such an exciting time with all the swanky cars! I can't believe that electric one went so fast. Jenkies! It's exciting to see all the hybrid business in the works as well. :D
More pictures of the brothers Crane please....
Got love a girl who drives like she's trying to rip off her life insurance company, eh?
i am so glad i saved you until this evening, sugar! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! sweet/sexy/stuff these cars are. . . i keep saying yes! yes! yes!

I'll take whatever it is that Sir Stirling Moss is driving! Sweet looking car. I'm sure Jodie Kidd is able to easily distract the other drivers with a wink. That and driving her Maserati really fast. Zooooom!!!!
The trees had good reason to scream in terror, Robyn; several of them got rally cars wrapped around them over the course of the weekend.
Hee hee, Shan. The Marlboro Man may be good with a horse but he sure is a crap driver.
Electric cars are getting pretty hot these days. Generation One biofuels suck huge environmental ass and our government is right to rein back on them, but give it ten years and the next generation should actually do some good.
A "certain sporting automotive company" are making something secret and totally awesome in the environmental stakes that I may be allowed to reveal later in the year.
And there may be a sickening photo of the brothers Crane later in the series.
Rich. Here's to Jodie. A supermodel who can talk cars. What a dream girl!
T: She's awesome. She trashed all the men in Top Gear's track challenge and was only pipped by a few hundredths of a second by another insane girl, Ellen Mc.Arthur, the solo, round the world yacht lunatic.
They sure are sweet, Savannah.
More to come.

Yup. Fun for girls and boys alike, Katie. Sir Stirling still races all his original race cars; this one's an Aston Martin.
You're making all the boys out in blogland jealous you know, particularly of Phil.
I used to navigate for my father in cross-country rallies. He raced all sorts of cars and had a hill-climbing vehicle - I don't know what else to call the thing. Quite a few access weekends were spent in a place called Kuitpo Forest, south of Adelaide where forest rallies were held. On one hills rally, Dad almost won once but came second because I made one silly mistake with the name of a building. Took a long time before I heard the end of that one. I think I was only about ten years old at the time.
You were a rally navigator, Mme? Wow! The most truly insane job in the known universe! I am in awe!
Hoorah for your dad! Rally cars scare the crap out of me.
All that shine....
