A Blasphemer Writes

Ah, schadenfreude …
A guy got on the train this morning at Ipswich and was struggling up the aisle, looking desperately for a seat.
Big guy. Smart business suit, briefcase, laptop bag, newspaper under one arm, coffee in one hand.
He suddenly rears back and lets rip with an enormous sneeze, at the same time raising his hand politely to cover his mouth.
As a result, he sneezes into his latte and sprays three rows of seats, then drops it and it spills coffee all the way down his front, at which point he tries to catch the falling cup and drops the rest of his stuff before falling flat on his arse as the train lurches into motion.

True!
I make no apology for laughing so hard I nearly wet myself. The rest of the carriage found it pretty funny, too - even those poor sods who got sprayed with coffee and sneeze.

Shadenfreude is the most basic form of humour; laughing at the misfortunes of others.
No matter how much we like to think of ourselves as enlightened, caring, civilised beings we still laugh like the pack of fuckwit chimps we really are when someone walks smack into a lamp post or Wily E. Coyote blows himself up with his own Acme dynamite.

Schadenfreude does of course carry with it an element of "there but for the grace of God go I".
But you shouldn't be thanking God for letting you off, you should be thinking "Holy fuck! What kind of sicko deity does that to somebody?"
Some twisted old git of a God sitting at a wall of CCTV screens, seeing this poor bastard and hitting the "SMITE" button, then sitting back and giggling at His own cleverness.
Twat!

If it turns out there IS an afterlife I'm going to track down that old fucker and kick His arse so hard!
Then we'll see who's laughing.
If Robyn and Shan are right and He is up there, glaring down at me, then all I can say is "Your aim is off. You'll have to do better than that, beardy."

That's the trouble with religion: we've made our Gods in our own image so when Hans Moleman gets smacked in the nuts with a football our Gods find it just as funny as we do.
Actually, that explains just about all of the Old Testament …

Our ancestors were simply too crap to think up a decent God.
Sigh.
The Greeks imagined a bunch of layabouts bickering amongst themselves and shagging anything that moved.
The Hebrews gave us a bullying big brother, "Don't you mess with MY God! He's bigger than yours and He'll thump you!"
The Hindus … well, that's just weird, but at least it showed a bit of imagination.
The Japanese had eight million of the little fuckers scurrying about. "Everything has a spirit so treat it with respect or it might bite your ass".
The Buddhists dispensed with a God altogether, but replaced it with the silly idea that if you behave yourself you might get reborn as a bald bloke in an orange bedsheet … or an ant.

Religion … almost as funny as schadenfreude.
God walking into a lamp post. Now THAT would be funny!

A hahahahahaha! I laughed too so hard i almost choked on my own coffee here at the desk. Your description of the miserable unfortunate was so graphic, i was ducking the spray.

What happened to him afterwards? Did he laugh himself? Was he embarrassed, poor devil, what? I need more...ohhhh....lol....sigh....:)

Hee hee, Lynn.
The poor guy gathered up all his stuff and apologised to his sprayees who seemed to see the funny side, then he got off at Manningtree (the next stop).
I felt rather sorry for him, standing forlornly on the platform, drenched in coffee, waiting for the next train back to Ipswich where he would disembark onto a crowded platform, still sopping wet and brown-stained, then drive home to be laughed at by his wife, get changed and catch a late train to the office … where he would be laughed at some more.
Ah, schadenfreude!

I just laughed my ass off, and if I was the guy on the Metro, I would have laughed at myself (though admittedly, I would be embarrassed as hell)! I often blurt laughter at inappropriate times, though. It's often viewed as a fault. (You know that song with the line, "I'm the kind of guy that laughs at a funeral"? I've been guilty of this. I can't help it.)

You are so irreverent, Dive, and you do it so uniformly that I almost cannot be offended. You are like the person who says, "I'm not prejudiced. I hate everyone." (I have been known to use that line.) I can see you using this entry as a piece of stand-up comedy.

Incidentally, I don't believe in a God that makes us sneeze coffee or inhale toast up our noses. I think it's purely poor design in the human body or in our technology--I cannot decide which. It might even be poor design of the coffee cup. And while my mother might say, "See? God GOT you!" I don't believe God "gets" anyone.

To you, my funny friend!

Thank you, Katherine. I'm with Douglas Adams' character, Wowbagger, The Infinitely Prolonged. He was accidentally made immortal and, being unable to cope with it developed a hatred of the universe in general and everybody in it in particular.
He built a time-travelling spaceship and made it his task to personally insult every living creature in the entire history of the universe … in alphabetical order.
A fine role model. Hee hee.

Surprisingly, Dive, I think this post is brilliant. I agree that we have made God into our own image. We know so little about the being that we have assigned all we can understand about humanity to it, including a gender and human emotions. I think God laughs, but that's just because I do, and I would have doubled over at laughing at the poor slob on the train. Did anyone help him up? I think God would have done that, but that's just because I might have offered to help out.

Robyn, you are too kind.
The poor guy did get a lot of sympathetic help but we were still giggling when he left the train.

Well it's a great post to kick off a philosophical / religeous debate - something we have to thank man from Manningtree for!

So, assuming there is a God (let's continue to focus on the one from the Old Testament), then it's interesting to blame any person's misfortune on that diety. Reading along those theological lines, then why do most people not blame Ol' Nick?

I reckon Jehovah's had a tough press and...

...OI! STOP THROWING THOSE STONES AT ME!

Could I interest you in these pamphlets, sir?

Classic story; I could visualize the entire scene! If that poor guy knew that his morning embarrassment was going to be giving a good chuckle to people all over the world, he would have just gone home and gone to bed.

It's just a shame I'm working from home tomorrow, Katie; I have a feeling he'll get a cheer when he gets on board in the morning.

Poor fellow. Is he a regular on the train then? I bet you look out for him at Ipswich every time you commute from now on. You and ole Nick are just plain mean, mean, mean.
I would have felt responsible and offered to wipe his shirt and buy him another coffee while dabbing his nose and asking if he had a fever.
I bet when he went home to change he decided to call in sick; sometimes when one wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, it's best just to get right back in.
Teasing Tuesday ... right on form there Dive!

Sprayed the tea all over the monitor!!!

I wish I was there to witness that - I would have laughed to.

Sometimes you just gotta.

I wonder if he has a blog?

I didn't recognise him, Mme. but I'll definitely be looking out for him next week, if only to protect myself with a newspaper when he approaches.
It is the height of hay fever season here, so everyone is sneezing. He was offering to help the people he sneezed coffee all over as much as the other way around.
As for me, I was trapped in my window seat half a carriage away and anyway I was laughing too hard to be of any help to him.
I love being mean. It makes Tuesdays worthwhile.

Shazza: It may be mean to laugh at other people's misfortune but it sure feels good. Hee hee.

He'll be laughing too in time. Perhaps just not today. These are the best types of stories to tell to your friends later over (unspilled or sneezed on) coffee.

And you can forget any other big God-bothered rants from me today 'cause It's ME BIRTHDAY! Weeeeeeee

It is positively not possible to ruffle my feathers today! :D HAPPY MY BIRTHDAY TO YOU AND YOU AND YOU!!! la la la la la
I'm still kickin' it in my thirties! Woohoo!

I'm going to call you Divebert from now on.
Maybe only you and me will know why.

And as for Dogbert: I hadn't turned over my calendar since the weekend so I just took a look and laughed my ass clean off.
I'll scan it and post it tomorrow if I remember.
Hee hee hee hee hee.

I tried to reply to this yesterday and just after I wrote a whole heap of stuff and clicked "publish comment" the freakin' blog server had a shut down. I said a few choice words and stumped off.

Anyhow decided to come back and do a summary of my comment today!!!

There is definietly no God and I can proove it - Today (that is yesterday now) there was a message on our local TV station informing us that "Due to a technical problem they could not screen the doco - The Miracles of Christ -part II" We fell on the floor laughing and I thought of you immediately!!! I go to your blog and there it is "A Blasphemer Writes" - what a hoot!!!!!

Hee hee hee hee hee!
Jules, once again you have made my day. I am sitting here giggling after a chortle-fest with tears rolling down my cheeks. That's gonna make me grin all week.
Thank you so much.

I would have been laughing behind my hand, because I tend to feel terrible when I laugh at people (my neighbor was shoveling snow last winter and literally did a pratfall with his shovel flying off into the street and I laughed so hard that I fell down too.)

Poor old sap.

Hee hee hee hee hee, Maria! Guilty fun is all the more fun for the guilt.
