I do love a nice long soak in a hot bath of a weekend.
I don't have the time during the week; it's strictly showers only, so when the weekend rolls around I find myself called by the deep, primæval urge to soak; to luxuriate in the sensual yumminess of my bathtub and to let my mind wander whither it will.
A big mug of coffee and maybe a few squares of Green and Black's chocolate and I drift off into realms of weirdness unplumbed outside of that steamy haven.
Last week I lay in the bath thinking about Jesus - and you know what that led to.
Next up, it was quantum mechanics … Hey, I happen to like quantum mechanics! And I am fortunate enough to possess the arithmetical chops required to ponder the subject in the bath. It is not boring!
Today it was - somewhat more prosaically - "How the fuck did all the fish get to the Lake District?"
Hokay, so it's rather more mundane than Jesus or quantum mechanics, but my mind has many and varied dusty corners and that's what came creeping out this morning.
So: freshwater fish …
We have river fish and we have lake and pond fish. And a lot of these lakes and ponds are ultimately connected into river systems that reach the sea. So I can see how fish got into those.
But …
The Lake District.
Ten thousand years ago, at the end of the last ice age, the glaciers retreated to leave a series of valleys with pretty melt-water lakes in the bottom. All very picturesque and great fun for old Wordsworth and his chums, but not in any way connected to a river system (okay, Phil; I know that technically only one of them is a "lake" and the others are "waters", but semantics aside, the point I am trying to get across here is that they are a just bunch of overambitious ponds with no aqueous link to any possible piscine parental source).
So somebody tell me please, how the fuck did they get to be so full of fish?
Don't try to tell me Og and Ug decided to catch loads of river fish in their stone nets, put them in their stone buckets and haul the buggers up to the inhospitable heights of the Lake District and tip 'em in there.
And don't tell me God did it. There's not a HA! in the whole wide world big enough to pour scorn on THAT one!
Just please, for my Sunday sanity's sake, give me a plausible explanation.

Gosh, I wish I could write the way you do.
How do you know Og and Ug didn't put at least some fish in there, thinking it would be easier to catch fish closer to home, so why not stock the pond and let the things produce and provide years and years of easy fishing?
The "ponds" are huge lakes and you have to climb some very steep hills to get there, Robyn.
And you really wish you could write drivel? Wow! You are a brilliant writer and I'm very relieved you don't write the way I do.
:) Envy you the hot soak. When I remodeled decided to go with a great shower with glass bricks and no tub - because there are plenty of spas in Budapest if I want to soak. Well, it was a mistake. :)
But then, if it would bring quantum mechanics to mind in my case as well that would mean a giant headache - so, who knows :)
Hee hee.
Much as I love an invigorating shower, Isadora, I cannot live without my long, languorous, lingering latherings.
I don't care that I come out looking like a prune; I just need my deep, delicious fix of bathtime Heaven.
Sigh …
What with wearing the cast on my arm at the moment, it's showers only. Baths are out of the question, because I can't get out of the bath using one arm!
All I ever think about in the bath, pathetically enough, is ideas for blog posts, which means that blog posts will probably be sporadic for the next few weeks.
O.K. so, fish eggs are very small for the most part. They are also very sticky, that's to say they are adhesive rather than long, thin and brown with leaves on.
So they are transported on the feet and legs of aquatic birds and mammals and can also be taken up into the atmosphere during storms and floods.
Fish have, remarkably, also developed a cleaver matter transfer device which ensures they can find and populate new environments with relative ease.
Hope this helps Bro.
Bummer, Betty!
If your cast comes off for the Christmas break you can spend the whole time in the bath and bollocks to everyone else.
Full: fish eggs are delicious.I prefer to eat them in Japanese restaurants rather than wear them on my legs and feet.
I do like your second option, though.
The things you ponder when you have a bath!
I have no idea how they got there - GPS?

A lovely long, hot bath is the perfect place to let your mind wander weird paths, Joy.
Possibly you could apply your biblical meanderings to the question, as well.
Genesis Chapter 11 mgith have some insight, i f you can gert past all the begats and the boring verbal timeline of it all.
Ho hum. Coffee and chocolate in the bath? I take in wine, cheese and candles!
The Tower Of Babel, Vic? Hee hee. Are we back to the Babelfish again?
Wine and candles are good in the bath, but cheese? That's one I'm going to have to try!
I take a bracing shower each morning and a long hot soaking bath each night before bed. This baffles Bing who wonders how I could get dirty from bedtime until morning...
I don't often think about quantum mechanics, fish or Jesus in the tub, though. You know what I do? I mentally write my blog posts. And it sort of sounds as if you do as well!
Yeah... what Full said.
When I built my home I made sure that the tub would accommodate my 5'10" body. It cost me a bit but it is 6' long and 4'deep with arm rests. No jets just a big ol' soaking tub. Sadly, I have soaked approximately 5 times in the last 7.5 years. Never seems to be enough time.
