I awake this morning to a feeling of powerlessness.
It's the day of the big bunfight across the pond and there's nothing I can do about it.
The news announces that no more than a forty percent turnout is expected. What the fuck are the other sixty percent thinking? Probably nothing at all. Anyone who has the power of a vote and doesn't bother to use it (even tactically) deserves everything they get.
Wankers.
My Favourite Americans (TM) will all be exercising their constitutional right to kick some ass, so I'll support them the only way I can by standing here waving my pompoms and high-kicking. Rah! Go Team!
Meanwhile, on the rest of Planet Earth, a couple of reassuring snippets of news:
As I sip lovely Cuban coffee from my Nicaragua Solidarity Campaign mug (www.nicaraguasc.org.uk; and buy more of their stuff from my Marxist Shopping link in the sidebar), with its picture of Augusto "Mad As A Chocolate Hat But At Least He Kicked Yankee Butt" Sandino on the front, I am warmed to hear that old Sandanista pal Daniel Ortega looks set to regain power in that CIA-blighted country.
Monkey Boy sent his disgraced, senile and incompetent evil sidekick Ollie North down there during the campaign, where he bumbled around, more like Ollie Hardy, ranting about Ortega being "Hitler". Ortega's opponents hung their heads in disbelief and stated that US interference in their elections has been "clumsy and embarrassing".
Nothing new there, then … except at least this time they didn't bring guns …
And a glimmer of hope for a future Iraq with the news that today, Vietnam is to join the World Trade Organisation.
Decades after kicking the US out of their country (sorry guys, but to paraphrase Clausewitz: "Strategic withdrawal my ass! Getting soundly beaten and running away is 'defeat' in my book"), the ex-"Gooks" have rebuilt and at last rejoined the world.
Once America gets the hell out of the Middle East, give it a few decades and they might do the same.
Mind you, Vietnam didn't have oil …
So. In a few hours the bunfight will start and I'll have to watch from the sidelines.
And if any of the sixty percent are reading this; get out there and vote Democrat, you morons!

I'll do my part, Marxist pal (gosh, I never thought I'd have a Marxist Pal). Anyway, I'm not sure when the polls open, but I should be there by 8 am.
Rah! … and indeed, Rah!
I never thought I'd be so excited by the thought of people voting in a US mid-term bunfight, but I've been jiggling up and down like an impatient child all morning, waiting for things to happen over there.
I have different newsfeeds up on different computers, but it's much nicer to have real news from real people.
Thanks, Robyn. Have a great day.
Let's hear it for Papa Karl!
Well, I'm off to the polls now. Have a raging head cold (seems that the funtime gods did have a price to exact), but I'm going to do my part ot piss off George.
Oh, and waking up to the news about Ortega made me smile... as I reached for the tissues.
For a fleeting moment there, Sassy, I thought you meant Rove! Eek!
The funtime gods always exact their gleeful revenge, but hopefully the exit polls will give you a nice warm glow later on.
My favourite cold cure: hot water with freshly squeezed lemon juice and honey, washed down with plenty of scotch … or just plenty of scotch …
Hot Toddys. I just might have one this evening. It might help me sleep soundly instead of having all these crazy dreams.
Oh, Hot Toddys. I love those when I'm sick. My dad used to make them for us when we had bad colds. What a guy.
My mother clicks her tongue at me when I tell her about having one. Everyone else just sighs with contentment.
I had a really bad cold two years ago, the kind where you stay up all night coughing. Hot Toddys were the only thing that cleared everything up enough so that I could sleep.
So, I've learned that staying home sick after starting up this little blogging obsession means spending all of one's time on the Internet. I need to get into my comfy chair and watch Grey's Anatomy or something relaxing like that.
Funny toddy story: a few years ago I had a nasty brochial infection around the time I was playing in a pit band for a high school musical (they used adults in the band). I couldn't miss the rehearsal, so I filled my travel mug with a good stiff toddy. It was a little too strong, though, and half way through, while playing The Princess and the Pea on my horn, I got a bit of a head rush. So I went out into the hall and dumped my precious toddy in the high school drinking fountain. I missed, and most of it ended up all over the floor smelling quite like whiskey. It was embarrassing and funny and ironic all at the same time. I imagined the janitor walking by in the morning and wondering what foul kid had spilled his flask. Anyway, I played the rest of the show and giggled through the whole thing.
Ha! THAT is funny. Drinking in school. Robyn, you are just full of delightful surprises.
Elections and liquor. I love this discussion.
Hee hee hee!
You can always tell when a professional musician arrives anywhere; they head straight for the bar. You fit the bill perfectly, Robyn.
I'm now going to settle in with a scotch (for medicinally sympathetic reasons only, you understand), and flick channels and interweb to catch the exit polls.
Cheers!
Keep your drunken fingers crossed for us. :)
Democrats in my book can be called the lesser of two evils, weak, compromising leadership can do as much damage as greedy over zealous leadership, they are well screwed either way, time for Britain to take control again, we'll flatten the place and rebuild it.
I'm more nervous than I've been in a Brit election for years.
I'm out of the office most of tomorrow so I'll miss all the fun and not get the results until after lunch, by which time you and Robyn will be up and posting.
Damn.
More scotch …
Fingers are crossed.
Hi there, Old K.
Yup, if things don't go well, it could be time for a counter-revolution.
Grab the colonies back again and smack some heads together.
Polish up your claymore.
They are the lesser of two evils, but since the ruling evil is truly evil, evil, evil, I'm casting my lot in with evil lite. When the fundamentalists are no longer ruling my country, I will work with the Greens.
Vote Evil Lite!
I love it!
Sassy, the fact that my city council is Green makes me so proud and happy. I only hope that before you get to my age, yours is the same.
I doubt that will happen in this town, but I don't plan to stay here.
It's a big country.
If you can't find a decent corner of it, we have a ready made Green city over here to try out.
All this talk about Green. This morning at the coffee shop, I had a chat with a customer about the stench that comes from a closed land fill about 10 miles from here and how it doesn't smell going north, but going south, good God.
Just dragged myself out of bed. Half asleep, listening to Newsnight. A real bi-party bitch slapping fight going on which was stopped in its tracks by the phrase:
"Gentlemen, You do realise that this is not going out to a single American voter?"
Utter silence …
Delicious.
I don't think I'll get much sleep tonight. This looks worryingly close.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow, gang.
