Yikes!
Halloween!
No internet for the last 24 hours!
Thanks to all those who noticed I'd dropped off the planet. I work from home on Halloween and the ghosties have eaten the interweb.
The reason I work from home is so that I can be there with the goodies when the kids come to demand stuff with menaces. If I'm in London, I get home too late.
The first year I worked down there I got back to find my house egged because I hadn't answered the door. That stuff sets like concrete. It was all over the brickwork, the windows and in my door lock. I spent about an hour that night and several hours the next weekend cleaning it off.
Luckily, last night we had a howling northerly gale, straight down from the north pole, with horizontal freezing rain, so the miniature crime wave stayed indoors. As a result, I've got oodles of chocolate and good stuff to eat! And the ghosties have now left the machine, so my normal crappy internet service is resumed.
Hoorah!
Belated Happy Halloween.

I did notice your absence. Sassy and I were speculating. Glad to have you back.
Oh, and we had only five little kids knock on our door--our neighborhood is growing up I guess--so I have a big bowl of assorted good things too. Yum, or yikes.
darn, and here I thought you were out painting Norwich orange with Ms. Stripey-Tights...
you may both feel free to share your gooey goodies with me. :)
Glad to be back.
I've never really missed the internet when it's gone down before. This blog business is too addictive.
As for Halloween: I'm just glad I didn't carry out my threat to give out boiled sweets and toffees.
I'd love to send some goodies your way, Adair, but things get a little messy when I try to force chocolate into my modem …
excuses excuses... hee hee.
grrr... it is early. Norwich = Norfolk.
Dive, I was really hoping you'd discovered stripey tight heaven. Looks like Adair and I think alike.
I bought chocolates just in case the little goblins belongning to downstairs demons decided to come knocking on my door. I didn't want to have "Die Bitch" on my car or something like that. But, they didn't knock. I'm bringing the chocolate to work.
Glad you're back.
Thanks, Sassy. Stripey tight heaven eludes me for yet another year. Oh, well …
Adair: I wasn't trying to confuse you (this time). Norfolk is a county and Norwich is its capital city.
And it's not early here; it's lunchtime. This time zone business can be a real pain. I'm half a day out of sync with the rest of you …
>>demand stuff with menaces
I'm afraid I'm with Mrs T. on negotiating with terrorists, and wasn't it Chaimberlain who found that all appeasement achieved was that they just say thank you (if you're lucky) and then come back for more goodies. (Please feel free to correct my history knowledge. I'm with the others on how enjoyable your history lectures are).
Glad you're back with us.
You know my history. You should run, screaming!
Hey, do you remember that Viz cartoon of Neville Chamberlain on the toilet?
"I have in my hand a piece of paper …"
That one will be lost on our Americans, but hee hee …
Ummm... Excuse me? American with a graduate degree in HISTORY here. I know what you are talking about. I also know all about the ice cream trucks.
I genefluct in your general direction, oh history mistress.
My old brain had forgotten one of the major reasons I call your blog "Intelligent America" (other than your admirable political proclivities).
Being a patronising and condescending old goitre, I naturally assume all colonials get their history from Hollywood.
I also get a bit crotchety when I see photos of "historical" or "heritage" sites in the States which are younger then me!
Grovelling apologies once more …
None necessary. Just wanted to let you know that not all of us get our history from Disney.
I have done a post on Neville Chamberlain, a true historical account, if 'blooper' (the normal not the beta) was up and running I could link you all there and educate sicken and delight, its in me archives somewhere.
Ah, yes … the missed chance at Munich.
I'm a great reader of people's archives. If I don't like their archives, they dont go on the list. And yours, Mister K, are as eloquent a tribute to your beautiful country as has been set down since that young Burns chap went off on one.
Cheers.
