A big hoorah for Sr. Rafael Correa, last seen hurtling headlong toward a sizeable victory in Equador's presidential elections.
Another step forward for democracy and common sense in the Yanqui-oppressed sub-continent.
Sr. Correa's opponent is Equador's richest man, billionaire banana tycoon Alvaro "Nob" Noboa, who has been campaigning on the kind of right-wing Christian fundamentalist ticket better suited to Texas than Equador.
He's been toting a bible and spouting crap like "Like Christ, all I want to do is serve …"
Unlike Christ, he wants to do this by attracting more American companies to profit from Equadorian labour …
Well, capitalism never did Sr. Noboa any harm; no wonder he believes in it. Whether or not that belief is shared by his workers, only the polls will show … and indeed they are showing …
Oh, and just to give you notice so you can get geared up to PARTY, Saturday 2nd. December sees the glorious fiftieth anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.

I have nothing to say to this post, which shouldn't surprise you. It's like the scene in Joe vs the Volcano when Joe says something thoughtful, and the dopey girl says, "I have no response to that."
I can pick up on the cigar thing, though--my husband likes cigars, but over the holiday, he bought a pipe. I prefer it.
I must admit, I can't imagine many street parties in Middle America come Saturday.
But as for this old Marxist, I'll be drinking Cuban coffee and Cuban rum, handing out Cuban cigars to my lefty chums and dancing to Cuban Music.
It won't be long before the Beard passes on and the US wreaks its grisly revenge on the Cuban people, so I'll party while I still can.
No, there won't be street parties in general, but the very vocal Cuban-American community in Florida will probably have some kind of reaction. Still, it won't be publicized.
Speaking of publicity, there was a war protestor in Chicago recently who commited suicide by setting himself on fire in a heavy-traffic area. He left a suicide note that was all about how he was ashamed of the war in Iraq and the death of innocents, so he was making a statement. The note got lost in the shuffle and is justing coming out now. so the discussion is about whether he was a nutjob or a martyr.
If I had to vote, I'd say a nutjob with convictions. I'm against the war as well, as are most of us, but his act seems self-absorbed to me. The attention is drawn to him, not the victims, and he could have used his zealous energy toward something really productive. But that's just me.

If he'd waited a bit, both our countries are looking to pull out anyway.
The "Exit Strategy" seems to be to wait for George and Tony to go so our respective governments can shift as much blame on them as possible, then get out as quickly as they can, without seeming to run.
We'll see. There are plenty of people here who think the situation is a disaster but to leave too early would be irresponsible. So much can happen in the next two years, it's tough to call.
I was thrilled by the news. I think it's great that Latin America is standing up to the US.
After a century of subjugation, things are beginning to look up (at least in Central and South America, if not the Middle East).
As Robyn says, it's a tough call in Iraq, but it looks like our governments are looking for a way out at last.
