Still in Notre Dame today, looking at the housework. Sheesh! How much dusting can you stand before you go crazier than Quasimodo? Some poor sap (click on the top picture to see him or her toiling away with the brass polish) has to crank these hefty candelabra down from the ceiling, clean off the wax, polish the brass, replace and light the candles and crank 'em back up again. Looks like a never-ending job.
Pretty, though …

How great that you could show us the second shot of that enormous (how could it be otherwise?) chandelier. The details and scale are daunting. I imagine that they go through much polish and an uncountable number of candles!
Congratulations on your 5 years of blogging - having just finished my first year, I have the greatest admiration for your perseverance and dedication. (Plus I am learning new "words")
Bises,
Genie
How freakin cool is that.
And especially being there when its down for cleaning so you can really appreciate the scale of the thing.
If Dobby had unscrewed that out of the roof and dropped it on Bellatrix she'd be stone cold dead.
I gotta say I envy you Dive. Europe is a small plane train or boat ride away, for us it's deep vein thrombosis time and massive jet lag to get anywhere slightly old and majorly cultural.
Genie, those things are HUGE! Whoever has to do all the brass polishing must have forearms like Popeye.
Five years of blogging seems a long time but it has just flashed by. I hope to still be here to help you celebrate your own first five years.
Kate, it is freakin' cool. Hee hee.
I've seen some of the Harry Potter movies now so at last I know what you are all talking about. Never mind a chandelier, you can drop me on top of Helena Bonham Carter any day.
Yes, it takes longer to get from London to my house than it does from London to Paris. Though of course Sydney is a teensy bit further for me.
Thanks for this insider's view to these incredibly massive candle holders.
I guess cleaning them could be spiritual experience in these surroundings.
Very interesting to catch this "behind the scenes" glimpse. I wonder if there are companies that specifically specialize in upkeep and maintenance of candelabras? All the employees would have Popeye arms: "yes, I'm a professional candelabra custodian."
Neetzy, I think cleaning these things must be a real pain, with thousands of people wandering past you all day and taking photos.
Hee hee, Ms.M. Now I'm stuck with an image of Popeye with a candelabra tattoo saying "I yam what I yam."
When I visited, they were in position. It's fascinating to see them up close. They're far more ornate than I imagined them to be.
And HEAVY!
Ooooo, I love the chandelier on the floor! Seeing up close and at ground level makes me want to climb inside and scale it, like when I was a kid and imagined exploring the inside of the Christmas tree.
Wouldn't it be fun to swing on one of those, pretending to be Quasimodo?
