Very Moving

Sheesh!
Moving offices sucks. Even though we were just moving to another floor in the same building it's been chaos (hence the blog break).

This is our new room. Much bigger than the old one but kind of echoey so when it's quiet it seems REALLY quiet and everyone just grins at one another and starts whispering and giggling.

I was supposed to have the first desk on the left with CB on my right but it was too exposed so I'm now in the third desk down and Chris the second. Nobody wants the end two desks so we've given them to the surveyors to hot-desk.

Here's our Genevieve (who some of you might recognise from Christmas drunk-time).
Gen's American so she is always getting overexcited about everything. She loved moving; it made her jump up and down and squeal a lot.

That's one of our little informal meeting areas along the corridor.
For once the architects' department has a whole floor to ourselves! Yay!

A nice new kitchen to mess up.
Note the fire door (which should always be closed) propped open with a fire extinguisher. Luckily the Fire Officer gives us notice of when he's coming round to inspect so we have time to run around and close all the fire doors that we usually leave propped open.

Pauline, Melissa and Little Amanda (as opposed to Big Amanda who you all know and love) watch the rest of us work.
Pauline sits across from me on my right. She's Queen Bee; second in command after CB.
We share the same surname and occasionally have to put up in a hotel together when visiting one of our more remote schools.
We book two single rooms and then turn up together at reception and announce "Mr.and Mrs. 'X' … Two rooms; we're having an argument."
Well it always makes us giggle.

This is where Old Dive will be checking your blogs and emails from now on.
Not until lunchtime though, as my boss now sits just off camera to my right and can see my monitor, dammit!
It's a more heirarchical set-up in the new office so the kids are all down at the far end (you can just make out Amanda's head way in the distance behind Tim's shoulder) and my life will be a lot more peaceful.
When kids actually have to get up off their asses and walk a few paces to ask a question you'd be amazed how many fewer questions they actually ask.
It's great! It filters out all of the dumb questions - well most of 'em, anyway.

Anyhoo … We moved in and the first day the aircon broke, leaving the rest of the building stifling and our new floor freezing, so now - while I am happily working from home - there are men on ladders everywhere, taking the ceiling to pieces and scratching their heads. Hopefully it will be sorted by the time I get back there on Friday.

So that's what I've been doing. How about you?

Looks like you all had fun, despite the inconvenience!

Well the girls had fun watching the rest of us carry heavy crates around.
Hey ho.

It ALL seems too exposed—no walls or anything. It's better than cubicles, I guess, but it looks like one big mess of desks with no privacy.

No privacy at all, Robyn, so blogging and emailing will be pretty much unavailable now unless I'm working from home like today.
Hey ho.
For work, on the other hand, it appears to be very good.

Wow...way too much coziness for me. I tend to go in my office and shut the door a lot, which then causes everyone to ask me if I am "mad" when I come out because they think I was angry and giving myself a time out.

I do like your windows, though. Our office has one side of windows and that is it and they look out on to a busy street. My office has NO windows. And I never blog at work, time gets away from me. I will sit down and read one blog and then think, "Oh, just one more." And pretty soon I realize that it is quittin' time and I have yet to narrate my charts.

Everyone looks happy, though. By the way, I showed your recipe for clams to Bing and she now wants to make them. She and Liv are all yippy skippy about it.

I like yippy skippy, Maria. Looks like you'll have to endure clams.

I don't like the windows in my new room because we're down on the ground floor. In my old room I could see over the opposite buildings to Big Ben and the Eye. Now I can't even see the sky without wheeling my chair right back and craning my neck.

Gosh that's really interesting. I somehow imagined you in a room of your own in a lofty tower to which all subordinates come and lower themselves upon entry. These workstations, I've only worked in one in my life, are so strange. I found it quite inhibiting with others watching everything. I'm not sure it produces the most work myself but still.
In the newsroom though, when I work there, we are all together though in an oblong arrangement, side by side with enough space so no-0ne is peeking over your shoulder constantly. I prefer that I think.
Thank you for letting us in. Where's Amanda though? Where will she keep her clothes? I need a shot of the bathroom too by the way. I am concerned about the new facilities for Amanda's pre and post party preps. One needs to know....

What have I been doing? I went back to bed this morning to war with the flu and woke up at 12. Ha!

Hi, Lynn.
Amanda is right down the far end where her constant jabbering is less distracting.
The washrooms are great and of course there's still the big old penthouse bathroom and the showers on the top floor. That's where she keeps her party togs, though we do have a cloakroom down here which is now full of her shoes.

We work in groups so interaction between us is vital (hence all the video-conflabbing with the office while I'm working from home).

The main group is CB and myself with Pauline and Tim and we have Donna, Amanda, Dan and Stephen as our gophers and Gen and Little Amanda as our admin peeps.
There's lots of interaction and discussion so open plan is the best way to work for us.

I hope you're on the mend at last!

I say "yippy skippy" sometimes too, Maria! Must be a location thing. :)

Hi there Dive! I've been a quiet little mouse this week, peeking in at your pictures and those horrible tube "foods" but enjoying your gruesome descriptives all the while, of course.

Glad the move went well. Jamey did this same type of thing about two years ago (only their original offices were even more private and almost homelike) and now it's everyones business is everyones business as usual. He still somehow manages to watch movies on a small bit of one of his screens while he works though the constant internet surfing has quieted. ;)

I think it all looks quite modern so that's nice. You seem to be handling all the changes nicely by the way! Way to roll with it! It seems like you wouldn't be so amiable about it all but maybe that's Dive and not your agreeable other self. wink
Enjoy working from home!

Hi, Savannah. At least I was only moving office, not moving house like you. Sheesh!
xoxoxo

Hee hee, Shan. Sorry aobut the "tube foods", but they were delicious and succulent and they didn't scream too much when I murdered them.

Many years ago I had my own office but I hated it. In my job we need constant interaction and the ability to bounce ideas off one another and my little team has been together for enough years to know that it works better like that. We were all really glad to get rid of those awful "cubicle" workstations and get back to a more co-operative working environment.

Of course it curtails the blogging and crap but then that's not what we get paid for.

And apologies to "Dive" fans for me taking over so much lately. What with the regime change in the US among other things, Old Dive has not felt the need to come out of his box and shout so much.

Ah shucks. Should I get ranty then? baha I usually just don't blog when I'm not feeling super silly and carefree. My blog is mostly my happy side perhaps. Uh oh. Things are quiet at my place...nah, I'm just trying to get my brain sorted out. :D You don't have to respond again...I'm just flapping about before going off for a walk with a buddy. Later!

dive said...

Hee hee! Have a nice walk, Shan.

Re: your last comment: now that we have an intelligent person at our helm, we do feel we can relax a bit and let him run the ship.

Glad your move went well and all your shouting and coffee drinking didn't go to waste. I notice the windows and light more than anything else. England has a certain light (yes, I know those are fluorescents but I'm talking about outside the windows). I'm sorry you don't have the view you want, but it sounds like you got everything else. Except A.C.

Does everyone get to work from home today?

Interesting new work space. I don't think I'd like being out in the open like that; but I can understand this set-up based on the collaborative nature of your work. I like having my own little cubicle, with 3 walls onto which I can place items of interest (like a huge map of Paris, lots of pictures of ancient mosaics and a poster of one of my tree photos to try to trick my brain into thinking I have a window). Sorry you've lost your view, but at least you have some natural light coming in.

Love the windows, Dive. (Genevieve's pretty cute, too.)

It's nice to see some of your office mates,Dive. And the new kitchen is...well, very white.

Where is the photo of Big Amanda, the lusty and busty queen of the castle?

Petrea: Only I get to work from home. Hee hee. But that's only because I'm fifty and the seven-nour a day commute would kill me if I didn't have a couple of days a week respite.
Hopefully we'll have proper A/C when I get back there Friday, but I'll take an extra sweater just in case.

Katie: we work better as a talky, interactive group so we won't miss those horrid partitions one bit.
Your cubicle - on the other hand - sounds quite nice and homey. I'm just miffed because I have to walk twenty yards to the corner to see Big Ben now.

Lucio: Yes, she is. We have a lot of cute girls working there but office romances are frowned on. Not that any of them would be interested in me anyway; I'm just Old Dive, the crotchety architect.

Rich: the new kitchen will soon be a total mess if the girls have any say in the matter. I'm just glad they don't go near my own kitchen.

Mark: Amanda is right down the other end of the room now, though her shoes are still everywhere.

Good that you finally moved. Thanks for the message on Norwich Daily.

Shazza said...

WOW - you actually have a STOVE in your kitchen area?

Good luck in the new space - I wish you many "happy and productive" years there!

neetzy said...

The new space looks spiffy! I do love the windows. I just moved an entire high school art department last summer. We were given two days to pack! (We still can't find everything).
I never thought to post photos of my new digs, but of course I just started this blogging kick in August!

It's a lovely office and it's lucky that you are at home while the aircon is being fixed. How anyone could work with a man crawling about overhead beats me!
Bad luck about not being able to see Big Ben anymore. I rather like the new less ranty Dive but on the other hand, if you feel the need to rant, it is always highly entertaining so don't give it up completely. That's a message to "Old Dive". :))

It is nice to be near Big Ben, even if you can't see it. That's a famous location. Can you step out for lunch and have a look?

I like that I know the neighborhood where you work. Then again, a lot of people do.

dive said...

Yes, the move was frantic but pretty successful, Joy. At least this time we didn't need to go dumpster diving for our stuff.

Shazza: all our kitchens have basic cooking facilities; plus we have a full catering kitchen with chef in the conference suite.

Neetzy: It'll do for now. It's better than the last place.

Mme: The old ranty Dive is just itching to get back in here so look out!

Petrea: Yes, I have to walk past it and across Parliament Square and past Westminster Abbey twice a day just to get to the office and I can always pop upstairs and take a look at it out the window.

That's one of the nice things about working here; I don't need to go visiting blogpals; sooner or later they all come to me. Hee hee.
