My Funny Valentine

Be afraid.

Be very afraid … for the world is surely about to end.

Stop whooping, Shan; it's not Judgement Day just yet but I do believe one of the signs of impending apocalypse is for me to receive a Valentine's Day card; something I have not done since college, when Jackie the anorexic girl (model for "Anorexic Girl" in the New Kid comic strips) was chasing me.

And speaking of Anna Rex, the card that plopped on to my doormat (or was it into my in-tray?) features her, too.

Hokay, conspiracy fans, over to you:
The clues are:

(a) It was addressed to "Dive" so I must assume it came either from Blogville or one of those weirdo lurkers (hi, guys).

(b) How the fuck did the sender find out where to send it (though I confess it is pretty easy to figure out where I live and where I work from my posts)?

(c) There is an initial inside, but no name.

Any clues as to who Dive's secret admirer may be?
I know and I am grinning bashfully.

Hee hee hee hee hee …

I was going to post the Chet Baker myself; but, since you've beaten me to the punch, I've taken up your MBV theme:

Ah! I was sorely tempted by that one myself, Lucio, but I needed a fix of Bilinda … sigh.

Happy Valentines day !!!nice card.....

Your Mum has got a card and is being taken out to dinner tonight, also as usual a dear neighbour cooks heart shaped shortbread with strawberries and cream for his wife me and two other OAP's... so you see life can be good on Valentines day....even for old folk...

By the way your sausage rolls are in the fridge awaiting you.....

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

Ooooh you got a card Alifan! Fantastic. Enjoy your meal. I got an online card ... post hasn't arrived yet...:)

Well. Dive. Hmmm. Interesting. You say you know already which is a bit of a shame. I wanted longer. I shall put Amanda's name forward. Or Joy, although she's taken, she's thoughtful.
Thing is; are you going to fill us in?
Happy Valentine's Day Dive!

dive said...

Happy Valentine's Day mum.
Have a great time tonight!
Damn, I want sausage rolls now. I'm going to crave them all day.
Hey ho.

Happy Valentine's Day, Lynn. I know you are a fan of romance and all that icky stuff so I do hope your day is full of pink, fluffy things and lots of chocolate.

So far it's two votes for Amanda (hahaha) and one for Joy.
Poor Joy! I just spent an hour with her at breakfast and left her pouting and stamping because I've been tormenting her as to who it might be.
This is such fun!

Katie?

dive said...

Lupine Lady!!!!!!
Your own niece? Scrivens! How could you do that to her? Hee hee.
Katie won't even tell me where she's going on vacation.

dive said...

Oh, Joy did wonder whether it was a boy or a girl.
And now you'll be wondering that, too.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

It wasn't Dive. You'll see what I got, over at mine.

dive said...

Yay for Love Hearts, Lynn!

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

I know they're so yummy. Half the pack is gone.

savannah said...

did you see the anti heart yesterday? black heart with "don't believe the hype" on it! as to your secret admirer, my vote is with amanda!
xoxoxoxo

dive said...

Lynn, I would have done exactly the same thing. Hee hee.
Enjoy!

Savannah: I did! The hearts cracked me up.
xoxoxoxo

So:
The guesses so far:
Amanda … 3
Joy … 1
Katie … 1
Joy had lots and lots of guesses but they won't be part of the score because I can't remember them all.

I'VE GOT NOTHING!!!!!!!!! But, I'm terrible at solving mysteries! I guess I'm going to have to go with Amanda as well with the in tray possibility and your recent giggle fest. But, that is not my final answer.

I love that it made you grin bashfully. YAY!!

Oh, you just reminded me. I had a dream about the apocalypse the other day and now I'm VERRRRRY scared of it. I'll not think on that today. Eek, I dream too much.

Now, get out there and hunt down that Valentine! :D

dive said...

Shan, I thought you'd be happy about the apocalypse. You'll be one of the ones pointing and laughing at the rest of us.
Bad dreams suck, though. Poor you.

You really have nothing?
Well, I suppose it's time I disappointed the pollsters and eliminated the current leader.
It is not Amanda.
And yes, I am still grinning bashfully (and kinda smugly). Hee hee.

Shan said...

Ok then, it's Lynn via her Mom and Pop. Heh? She loves romance. It just works for me. Big smile.

dive said...

Hee hee hee, Shan!
Lynn will be horrified to find herself on the list of suspects.

Petrea Burchard said...

I admire you Dive, but it's no secret.

I hope it's not a platonic admirer, and someone you admire in return.

I've got to start coming here more often because I always have fun but I don't know all the players. I'm intrigued. Your glass planet can take another inhabitant, I hope?

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

he he Shan!
Dive I'm not horrified in the least. Shan knows that I shall soon be in your area... er...so to speak! LOL.

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

Lightbulb! Is it Peahen?

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

Ooh ooh! It's Judith isn't it? Judith from school; hot Judith!

Cheltenhamdailyphoto said...

OMG it's not the girl with the strange collection is it? You know the weirdy one?

OOOOMG oh no - it's the little people isn't it, the ones you call inbred and who drag you off to frightening parties. It's THEM isn't it?

See Petrea what you're missing when you don't come here? Pull up a chair... :)

dive said...

Petrea, it is indeed someone I admire in return.
Greatly.
And you know you are more than welcome over here as long as you don't mind all the swearing.

Lynn: you mean at long last your long-suffering unvisited mum and dad will be blessed with your presence?
And maybe me, too?
I hope you're still up for coffee and goss.

Lightbulb: When I last spoke to Pea (on her birthday last week) she was striding across the snow-covered Peak District in the loving company of her lovely Rog.
So no, it's not Pea, though I do love her dearly.

dive said...

It is not Judith from school, Lynn. Regrettably, she is now happily married to some software magnate in the US.

And yikes!
Holy frijole!
No, it is not Kelli from "The Village Of The Damned", nor - mercifully - is it anyone else from the cast of Deliverance.
Sheesh! You scared the living crap out of me then!
Hee hee.

You do realise that multiple guessing is kind of cheating, don't you?
Not that I mind … as Joy found to her frustration this morning I am keeping this one under my hat for a leetle while.
I like tormenting the Sewing Circle. It is my revenge for the Pride And Prejudice-fest that exploded over here a while back.

I have no idea. I am still miffed that Katie hasn't told us - her BFFs, blog friends forever - where she is off to for vaca and now this?

Happy bloody Valentine's Day anyway. :D

Your card reminds me of an extremely politically incorrect joke: What do you call a guy with no arms, no legs and half a torso?

Dick.

dive said...

Hee hee hee hee he, Cali!
Excellent Dick joke. Thank you for that.

Katie certainly seems to be enjoying teasing all of us. But then I can't complain too much, doing much the same thing myself today.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, too. I do prefer the bloody type. What a great band MBV are.

Anonymous said...

I thought all Dick's were jokes. ;)

Can you believe there was a whole book of those "no arms, no legs" jokes. I still remember a few of them, but Dick is the best!

Petrea Burchard said...

I don't mind the swearing. You swear so charmingly.

So glad you greatly admire your Valentine and I can't wait to find out who it is! But I'll have to wait.

Now I have to go to the farmer's market before everything's picked over. Don't tell before I get back.

dive said...

Wow, Cali! That's a book I don't have, more's the pity.

Oooh, have fun at the farmers' market, Petrea. I love those places.
And don't worry; I won't tell for a while yet. Hee hee

Here is a link:

I guess the Dick joke should actually be: with no torso!

dive said...

Hee hee, Cali. Thank you for that. I had forgotten the "Bob" joke!

Maria said...

I think it is anonymous, who is no longer that.

And I wish I had thought to do it, but I am so horrified by blog stalkers that I would never even try to find out where you live.

Whoever it is, I hope you plant a big wet one on 'em. We haven't got the mail yet, so no idea if I got a valentine from afar. I did get the ultimate gift from Bing this morning...get your mind out of the gutter, Dive. She is in our bedroom bathroom right this second, repairing the toilet. Now, that's love.

dive said...

Woohoo!
A new suspect!
Actually, I'm kind of fascinated by our mysterious Anonymous. He or she will not tell me ANYTHING! I have a feeling he is a "she" and she maybe lives in France but I am probably completely wrong. Hee hee
Anything to say, Anonymous?

Blog stalkers suck, Maria, but if you ever want to come visit, Robyn and Prudence and Katie and Mme Benaut know my address as we are Blogville neighbours of long standing, so just email 'em.
This only applies to you, though! All others will be vetted. Hee hee.

You and Bing are the most romantic couple I know (run a close second by Joy and Thom) and I love reading your adventures.
When I read that she measured your finger for your ring wile you slept I almost cried. Plus of course, she's a brilliant musician, a great cook and she keeps her towels straight. What's not to love.
The three of you are welcome here any time.

Joy said...

We're only second to Bing and Maria???

dive said...

It's a close second and the fact that Bing is a better guitar player than Thom kinda tipped it.
Hee hee. Please don't hit me too hard.

I had a little wine last night...did I accidently pledge my undying love to you?

Shit.
I was trying to keep that under wraps.

Anonymous said...

(...sorry,F P,archeolog. and anthropolog.)

Are you O.K?

Anonymous said...

Holy Shit! You have received a ton of posts on this. Im gonna go way out on a limb and say it was sent by royalty. Im going with Princess Anne as my guess. With Amanda running a close second. Bless that bawdy gal.

ps The Porterhouse steak has been seasoned and I am about to go find some really nice wood. That "wood" of course mean wood for the fireplace. I know how your mind works Dive. Enjoy.

savannah said...

and how do you propose i am to be vetted, sugar? ;) xoxoxo

MmeBenaut said...

Twasn't me. I swear. Honest to god. I'm taken. I think.

Petrea Burchard said...

Oooh, vet me, vet me!

Mark, I hope you had a great time. I think you had the right idea.

Volmon said...

Okay, nobody seriously thinks it was Amanda. ... Do they?

Never mind. It definitely wasn't me and it probably wasn't you (was it?), so I'm stumped.

On the other hand, if I were a betting man, I would happily have put a fiver on Katie.

Terroni said...

You know, Lucio... Katie could be vacationing in Norfolk.

Terroni said...

(hee hee hee, says the pot stirrer)

dive said...

Anonymous: So … Boy, girl, angel, devil or demigod; that narrows it down just a little.
But did you send the card?
Hmm …

T: I don't think it was you, though I'd have been so flattered to receive a card from a drunken med school girl (my favourite type of date at college). Hee hee.
If you can't remember then neither can I.

Anon": Yes, I am OK, thank you. How are you?

Mark: Hee hee hee hee hee!
You get the big prize of a Porterhouse steak and some nice wood (hee hee). Your suggestion of Princess Anne had me choking with laughter and sent coffee up my nose.
You so totally rule.

Savannah: Very carefully, I assume.
xoxoxo

Mme: I hope it is you doing the taking. I shall narrow it down and reveal that the card did not have an Adelaide postmark.

Petrea: Hee hee hee!
I agree; Mark's suggestion is my favourite so far. Wrong, but utterly wonderful, just like the answers to most of life's big questions should be.

Lucio: It wasn't you? Damn! I had kinda hoped.
Oh, well.
I am not a betting man either but I am wondering what you might put a fiver on Katie to do. Hee hee. As she made it abundantly clear when we met last year that we were meeting as friends and nothing more I would not risk that fiver on her to be a Dive-fancier; my money's still on Princes Anne.

T: Tee hee. No; much as I can't wait to meet her and Eric in Paris in October, Katie is definitely NOT vacationing with me here in Norfolk. I am all alone as usual and about to hit the housework. I have no idea where Katie is, though it's a pity she's not here to join in the fun.

Weirdly, at least two other people I expected to leap on this post are suspiciously absent. I wonder what that might mean?

I do love having my pot stirred. Hee hee.

Scout said...

Hmmm. You didn't reveal the initial, so how can anyone give even an educated guess?

dive said...

Robyn, educated guesses are no fun; wildly inaccurate guesses, spattered all over the place are much more the flavour of the day.
And if you stick to the Roman alphabet that gives you a one in twenty-six chance of getting at least the initial right.
