Pier Perambulation

More aimless meanderings from last Sunday:

In striking contrast to the soul-sucking emotional bleakness and appalling plethora of chav tat festooning Great Yarmouth's piers (see last week's distressing photoblog), where they appear to have aimed for the lowest common denominator, missed it and kept on falling 'til they hit bottom, Southwold's pier is a refreshing oasis of Edwardian gentility.

For a start, the buildings on it are clean and they sell nice things like teas. There's nary a carnie or a pikey to be seen, and no greasy chippie! Woohoo!

All along the railings are nice little brass plaques commemorating folk who loved it here (or in some cases were actually conceived on or beneath the pier).

From a distance you can see how quaint and uncluttered it is, compared to the hideous Yarmouth piers, redolent as they are of Carnie-sweat, mingled with the stink of stale chip fat and vomit (you saw the photos so you know I'm not exaggerating) and aswarm with slot machines and racist seventies "comedians".
We get a different class of tourist here at Southwold, as witnessed by the polygamous Mormon family taking their hunchbacked child for a walk on the sand.

The locals fish off the end of the pier.

And with a view like this, it doesn't matter if they don't catch anything.

Halfway along the pier is this somewhat alarming contraption. It's a water clock … of sorts.

I'll leave you today with this happy pair of gents, trousers around their ankles, behaving as only the British do at the seaside.

lol that was hilarious Dive! Great pics again, i'm thoroughly enjoying my tour.

I'm not enjoying computers, though. Every time i upload pics, it renders the mouse useless; the whole thing freezes. Having disconnected the whole laptop and reconnected i can use it again but i can't upload any more pics. Any idea at all Mr. Techie?

Yikes! That's not one I've come across, Lynn. I hope it's nothing serious. I need my Tewkesbury fix every morning.
Do you have a spare mouse anywhere? Or have you tried it in different USB sockets? I don't use a mouse or a Windows machine so I'm afraid I'm a bit lost with this one.
Good luck fixing it!

And I'm glad you enjoy the sight of men with their trousers around their ankles. Hee hee.

I do indeed, Dive. Nothing better he he.
Well i've tried the different USBs yes and i've tried a spare mouse. Grr. Thanks anyway. I'll still bring you the Tewkesbury fix (ahh, thanks) but the timings might be all out, as i've got to wade into a teenage bedroom when it's vacant to upload my pics on my son's pc then email my choices to myself. Good God what a bore all that's going to be! I must have been very wicked at some point, though i don't recall it... sigh....

Not for your awful plight, but for that last sentence!

So it's a classier version of Brett and Mary shagged here 1993?

I wonder how many conceptions under piers worldwide have taken place?

Love the gents with their pants down at their ankles...they have horrible aim though.

Great Pics Dive!

I LOVE the clock, although I thought you said this was a place for the more gentile.

What's pikey?

Lynn: Hee hee.

Vic: Not so much "classier" as more genteel.

Shazza: That's a statistic I really wouldn't like to have to collect data on.

And guys are given the equipment to aim with but never seem to do so. Hey ho.

Kate: twin Ned Kellys peeing. Hee hee. Perhaps you should have this clock down under.

Robyn: I think it's regarded as "quaintly eccentric" and "ahem"med over by little old ladies.

Pikeys are fake Gypsies. Just bunches of crooks in caravans who leave a trail of litter, filth and burgled houses as they travel round the country. They tend to congregate at places like Yarmouth.

Why? Why must there always be some sculpture of men or boys pissing? Why? Why? Do men really think it's cute?

Southwold really looks inviting, Dive. It does look a lot neater than Great Yarmouth, though missing its character hehe. Where's the colour???

And may I say, beautiful shots!

I thought it was only the Belgians who found this kind of thing attractive, Joy, but it obviously appeals to Suffolk people, too.

The colour is coming up later in the week, when I get to the town and the lighthouse.
