Ventura Highway

The original and genuine.
Accept no flashy, upstart American substitute.
This is the real thing.
Californ-I-A.
It used to be a tiny clifftop fishing hamlet on the East Norfolk coast.
Of course, all that is left now is a single row of fisherman's cottages, an exceedingly good fish and chip and wet-fish shop perched atop the cliffs, the rather splendid and Dive-frequented California Tavern (Hi, Bob) serving up great local bands, good food and real ales and … er … hundreds of acres of dishearteningly shabby caravan and chalet parks for the fucking tourists.

The price of living in a beautiful place is that other people want to come and look at it.
And by the time they've parked their stupid fucking caravans all over it (and blocked up all the tiny local roads) it is no longer beautiful.

The next post, however, will be. I'm heading out to the Norfolk we keep secret from the tourists.

I'll look forward to that, Dive. Know what you mean. Tewkesbury however, after the floods, is in dire need of those tourists right now. They believe we are still thigh deep in water all over the town and drowning in E. Coli. We're not. It's gone again. For a while. Send the pesky tourists over to us.

Like the sign. We should have a little thing going where we post such signs of otherwise famous places. There are a few round here too. Will post asap.

Cool idea, Lynn. Let's not let Washington (Tyne-and Wear) get all the attention.
I'll look out for your signs.
And you are more than welcome to our tourists. I think I'll put up some billboards at the Norfolk border saying "FUCK OFF! WE DON'T WANT YOU! BUT WE HEAR TEWKESBURY IS VERY NICE."
Hee hee.

LOL ! What a sign that would be. Great!

I see, you have a California. Next time I'm west of her a bit, I'll take a picture of the sign that points to Berlin, with the accent on the first syllable.

don't want to post any secrets dive for they won't be secret any more.

Sounds like a good place you have there. that will for sure be the first place my caravan stops when I come and visit. ;))

Call me an ignorant colonial but what the hell is a "wet fish shop?"

Kate, I was wondering the same thing.

Okay ladies, i shall fill you in in the absence of Dive, who is obviously somewhere in the Norfolk broads right now.

A wet fish shop merely means fresh fish i.e. uncooked. A fish shop tends to mean fish and chips, like cooked food.

Robyn: if that "Berlin's anything like the "Cadiz" where Clark Gable was born then I suspect it's another one of those upstart Yanqui pretenders.

Rich: you can park your caravan on my driveway. Then we can sit with a couple of guitars and play Old Folks Music.

Kate and Robyn: Give praise and thanks to Lynn (I was stuck on a crappy, broken down train, by the way).
Lynn is correct as ever. This particular place is divided in two and sells fish and shellfish straight from the local fisherman behind the chip shop. It's wonderful.
As the old saying goes: "She was only the fishmonger's daughter, but she had a wet plaice for me."

Joy: Come the warm spring weather we can all traipse up the coast with our cameras. That'll be cool!

Where is the "New Beach"?

We spent soooo many hours of soooo many summer seasons there banging out sweet music for the lovely holiday folk.

I'm staggered that you didn't include it !!!

You also missed out the snails, the marina centre, the wax museum........... o.k. fair point, it's all arse.

The New Beach is still there (as I didn't have any bomb-making equipment with me).

And yes, it is all truly arse.
