As Seen On TV

Meet Mum's mate Darren.
Mum lives in Suffolk, near the coast and as it was another gorgeous, sunny February morning I picked her up and we toddled off to Southwold, home of Adnams' brewery and Darren's yummy wet fish shop.

This is Darren and Mum.
Darren was on telly this week, taking one of those celebrity chefs out into Sole Bay on his boat to catch sole, then cooking them on the beach.
He was well peeved as he'd spent the whole day with the TV crew and they didn't show his shop on the programme.
Bastards!

So here it is.
Go there.
Buy stuff.
It's brilliant.

It's like the tardis inside. There's a fabulous seafood restaurant out the back and - as the sign says "Bring your own bread and wine".
Fantastic! Great quality fish taken straight off his boat, cooked as you want it and plonked on a plate with no astronomical mark-up for wine and stupid bread. Grab a bottle of Chablis from the supermarket on your way over and save a fortune.

And this is the wet fish counter. Some of you were wondering what a wet fish shop was, well you're looking at one.
All of this is fresh caught and landed at the dock ten yards in front of the shop.

And this is the dock.
With some fat old man stuffing his face.

These are fucking glorious. Juicy, sweet fat cockles … That's cockLES, ladies!
Soft and melt-in-your-mouth succulent and tasting of the sea. Yum!
A splash of vinegar and a grind of pepper. Simple perfection.

This is what happens when you live too close to Adnams' Brewery.

More seaside frolics to follow.

How do you do, Darren. Your shop looks delightful, i'm sorry it ended up on the cutting room floor. Media types. Pah.

I love cockles Dive! Years since i had them but i fancy them like crazy now. Looks a great day out you had, wish i'd been there.

Come on up, Lynn. We don't have to do coffee in Norwich; there are plenty of other places to meet up.
Sitting on Southwold harbour with you eating cock(les) is indeed rather appealing.
Hee hee hee!

Like I said at Alifan's, what a lovely day. It's cloudy and gray and raining here, great for washing away snow. I have never had cockles, and if anyone reads an innuendo into that sentence, shame on you.

Me? Innuendo?
Robyn!!!
Next time you are in England I shall personally introduce you to the pleasures of cockles.
Hee hee. Shame on me!
Actually, they're like baby clams. And soooo juicy!

Now clams I know about. I am practically an expert now. hee hee

After yesterday I would think you'd never want to see another clam the rest of your life!
Whooee!

That looks like a top fish bar, just what you'd need after a visit to one of your luxury designed brothels.

Innuendo?
Wasn't there a Derek & Clive sketch that featured clams?

it's surprising the number of people who have no idea about the real taste of fresh seafood, sugar! we're fortunate here to live so close to the source.

OK Sweetheart - perhaps it is my age, culture or the fact that I've been indulging in the bubbly in early celebration...but what is WET FISH? and what in the world are cockles?

I'm so looking forward to my trip to Rome with my daughter next month - there will be a seaside brunch for sure; then May in Boston, it should be in the middle of lobster season...but I don't want to miss anything that is good, so do tell me about wet fish and cockles.

You sweet fella with the guitar, you!

I will get there, Dive, i will. I need to be there with you, is the harbour a comfortable place to eat cock-les?

Scout said...

Oh oh! Let me answer Isadora because now I know. Wet fish means fresh fish, straight out of the sea--wet.

Istvanski: Now I'm gonna have to dig up my old D&C tapes. I don't know about clams but I remember they did one about picking lobsters out of Joan Crawford's arse.

Savannah: Fresh seafood is indeed wonderful!

Isadora: I'll let Robyn tell you about wet fish, and cockles are a small and delicious shellfish.

Lynn: The harbour is a splendid place to partake of that particular delicacy. Hee hee.

Robyn: Yes indeedy.

My mouth is watering Dive, cock-les and mussels/muscles - what more could a girl want!!!

I was rather hoping a girl would want "that gorgeous, balding, flabby, middle-aged look".
Hee hee.

They didn't show his shop, not even once??? That's unforgivable! Which TV station is this?

Never had cockles in my life. Do they taste like oysters, shrimps or fish or something else? At the moment, I'm detoxing and the thought of food makes me ill :(

Would love to visit Darren's shop though! And you eat like a 5-year old! So excited, you'd think that was cake or ice cream. :)

It was ITV1, Joy, not your lovely Beeb; don't worry.

Cockles taste of cockles. Unlike oysters, mussels, shrimp or indeed anything other than more cockles.
You'll just have to try them when you've finished detoxing (but not those crappy ones in jars you get in shops).
Cockles are much better than cake or ice cream! Hee hee.

There is so much that I just WANT in these pictures. I want to walk by the sea and go into a wet fish shop and buy something. I want to eat cockles. I never have, although my Da spent my childhood singing to me about Molly Malone.

And I want to stroll around with that delightful looking man in black....

You can have all of that and more, Maria.
Come on over for a vacation and meet the English bloggers.
