Bloody Ice

Brr …
Well, at last we got our first snow flurry of the winter.
Driving home from the station last night in a northerly gale and one hell of a blizzard I thought the village would be snowed in this morning, but …

Hey ho.
It stopped snowing during the night and the wind blew most of it off the fields and roads leaving just a dusting.
It's still bloody freezing, mind you. I've slid as far as I've walked this morning as everywhere is just sheet ice.

Walking alongside the river it was like an ice rink and to stop myself falling arse over tit I put my hand out and grabbed hold of a wall which had what looked like two inches of soft snow on the top …
Fuckity, fucking fuck!
And "OW!!!"
There was blood everywhere.
What looked like soft snow was solid and very sharp ice.
Buggrit!
So, bandaged with a handkerchief, I slid about the city taking photos.

Here are a few shots of the Cathedral:

Looking across the playing fields from the riverside walk.

Same thing again only closer.

The lovely old cedar at the east end.

I took a load more before heading for breakfast with Rugby Guy, but I'll save them in case I can't think of anything to post about later.

Toodle pip!

You hurt yourself! Did you use anti-septic on it?

Lovely shots indeed! I was wearing my flipflops yesterday - as usual. Thom parked the car after picking me up from the library, I got out and 5 seconds later, I thought my feet were going to freeze! They didn't of course, but was it cold!

I dressed it properly when I got home, Joy. What a mess.

If you're out and about in your famous flip-flops today, be very careful on the ice. The roads are mostly clear now but the footpaths are treacherous.

Oh dear Dive. I'm most sorry for your hand, how painful! I still have a similar scar on my hand from an encounter with ice. I knew you'd be dusted in snow as my parents informed me this morning of the crunching ice. We have none. Yet.
I see the cathedral spire - and you went up there! my goodness, i just couldn't have, Dive.
Was Rugby Guy put off his breakfast by his bloodied companion?

Joy - flipflops - they are LETHAL in the rain, let alone ice. Get those boots on!

It's bloody freezing, yet you go for a walk. Why is that?

The cathedral is lovely in winter.

The hand bled much worse than it really was, Lynn. Though it stings something wicked!
And Rugby Guy is well used to blood and contusions; it comes with the territory.
As for the spire; I've been up it inside and out and both times were pretty scary.

Robyn: Just look at it! How could I NOT go outside and breathe in the crisp air and look at pretty things and … er … fall over like the old saddo I am?
Hey ho.

Crikey, Dive,

You live a dangerous life. We're worried about bushfires heat, no rain and how to keep the trees and gardens alive.
Would that be a Cedrus Atlantica Glauca; we have tons of those here. We just have to keep them alive.

Get some fur lined snow boots. With Michelin treads! We need you a bit longer, mate.

Cedrus Libani, monsieur; the original Cedar of Lebanon like Solomon used to build his temple. There are plenty of Atlantica Glaucas around but they've only been planted here in the past 200 years or so.
This one's quite a bit older.

If you ask Lynn nicely I'm sure she'd send some of the Tewkesbury floodwater down under to help you out.

Well i've sung and danced in my sitting room especially for you, M. Benaut. Should be on its way.

Is there a video available, Lynn?

Hi Lynn - and Dive! :D I was wearing flip-flops yesterday, but not today coz I thought they wouldn't have much grip. Would hate to fall flat on my bum!

But it was warmer by about 3pm, wasn't it?

I see Dive that you can still blog, even with an injured hand.

Aw...sorry for your poor hand.

I take the dog for a walk twice a day and I have had so many near falls on that freaky black ice that I must look like some sort of jerking puppet when people see me. I step gingerly, sort of glide and then whooooooppppsss...nearly fall, right myself and swear...start all over again.

And you went out in that willingly?

Joy: Warmer? Hee hee. Maybe by a degree or so.

Maria: that's a pretty good description of me in Norwich yesterday.
And yes, I went out in it willingly as we get snow so rarely here that I couldn't waste the opportunity to take some photos of it.

Even though, when I got out the front door I slid all the way down my driveway and halfway down the street before I could stop myself.
I had to gingerly make my way back across front lawns where it wasn't slippery.
The drive is still sheet ice this morning; no thaw yet.
But then this is just "play snow" compared to what you get!

At least you caught yourself. I didn't, and now I've got a painfully swollen knee to show for my clumsiness. I think I got most of the snow out of my ass crack, though.
