En route to Southwold for yesterday's cockle-fuelled innuendo-fest (thank you, ladies), we parked up near Blythburgh marshes and Old Dive crept, Elmer Fudd-like through the frost-hoared pinewoods to stalk Blythburgh Church (almost falling down a badger sett on the way … those stripey-nosed bastards seem to make a habit of digging bloody great holes in the ground and hiding them in undergrowth).

As you can see by the still frozen waters of the marsh it was fucking cold at that hour of the morning.
That's the beautiful, late gothic church of All Saints, Blythburgh in the distance behind the drowned stumps of pine trees and the avocet flying across the middle of the photo (don't argue; I've got the hi-res original and can see it's a bloody avocet. This marsh is where most of the blighters over-winter).
We'll be visiting the church in some detail later in the week, which is actually a lot more of a thrill than it sounds, because Satan appears, together with a dancing bear with a big cock, plus a man with a chamberpot on his head and a spectacular codpiece, but you'll have to wait for that.
In the meantime I am still trudging across a frozen marsh.Oh, looky! A pair of oystercatchers keeping their feet off the ice.
What do you mean you didn't know you were signing up for a birdwatching course?
Here's the church later in the day, when the sun had burned off the ice and I was full of cockles.I love these sunny Sundays; they give me enough photos to spin out a travelogue all week without having to think of anything to write about.
Hee hee.

I loved the shot of the birds!!!
Lucky you - you were able to have some fun this weekend. I spent my yesterday mostly trying to get better, and I'm getting there.
Hey, thanks for listening to the interview! I know - didn't the presenter sound totally off? For a second, I couldn't understand what was going on. It was like he and I spoke two different languages.
If anyone else wants to listen to the interview I had on the BBC, just click here.

Glad to hear you're on the mend, Joy.
That interviewer was such a dork! He sounded like he'd never interviewed anyone in his life. He just seemed to have a list of really dumb questions and not to listen to any of your answers.
Hey ho.
I enjoyed that, Dive. Old Stumpy looks quite creepy and i'm not sure i would be up for crossing a marsh, suppose you had sunk? Brr.
The photos are wonderful.
Listened to your interview, Joey! I thought it went well and the interviewer was okay really!
"Joey". Hee hee hee, Lynn! that was a great start by Mister Crappy the interviewer.
And yes, the marsh was pretty squishy underfoot but I didn't venture too far.
Dive, Nice photo and it looked very cold.
Joy, nice interview there.
Thank you, Alice. It was not as bad as it looked. The sun was shining and the air was warm enough not to need a coat, but the water took a bit longer to thaw out so the poor birds had to wait for their breakfast.
Well, we have a few theories. But the most logical one was that he was forced by his producer/s to do the interview because it's seasonal. He obviously didn't prepare at all, and I just laughed it off - Joey indeed! And you know, right after the interview, he didn't say goodbye to me at all! It was the producer who picked up the phone and thanked me and said they'd definitely want to have me again. Hmmm....
@ Lynn - Yes, loved the presenter :)
@ Alice - thanks! :)

It's looks just about as cold there as it has been here, Dive, minus the snow. I can't wait to tour the church.
And Joy, he actually asked you your sign. hee hee. Dive, did you cringe?
It WAS funny, Joy!
Would you actually go back on if you were asked?
Robyn: I did indeed cringe. I pictured him in a velvet jacket with medallions. Ew.
Eeeuuwww Dive that's worse than my imaginings of a grubby shell suit.
We males do come in an extraordinary array of mating plumage, Lynn; most of it thoroughly disgusting.
I'm really enjoying the photos Dive! I took some over the weekend, but I have one of those old fashioned "film" cameras, so I can't post anything until I shoot the whole roll and get them developed.
Looking forward to the codpiece!
I sympathise, Shazza. I too own a comprehensive array of "steam camera" equipment (far too much and far too good to replace with digital), but for blogwork I just use a tiny and cheap pocket digital camera for point and snap stuff like this.
The codpiece will be with us shortly, but tomorrow I was thinking of posting a couple of guys I found on the pier with their trousers around their ankles (yes it was a strange weekend).
WoW...some very beautifully captured shots!
I really like the shot of the birds dive. The reflections and the misty background make a good composition. Very good shot!!
You know how to tempt us girls don't you Dive.
Thank you, F.S. You're too kind.
Cheers, Rich. It was worth stumbling about in the ice then.
Maria: I aim to please.
Lynn: Apparently so; though I've never managed it outside a blogpage. Hee hee.
Hahaha, Dive! You're too modest. Come on, fess up. How many girlfriends?
Yeah, I'd probably be say yes to another interview, hopefully with another presenter!
@ Robyn - I know! But I wasn't interested in his zodiac.
And all my friends had one question - was the presenter gay or straight?
You tell me.

A mere half dozen in forty-nine years, Joy. But I did go for quality over quantity … hee hee.
That presenter was far too much of a misogynist to have been gay.
And far too much of a dork!
Do you really have to walk through the marsh to get there? And then to see the very gates of hell inside, barring the burning dogs?
What an incredible church and mixture--marsh, gothic stone, dead tree in the mist....brings me back to my favorite books as a child..."Five Go to Smuggler's Top." Mystical house with catacombs on top of a hill, complete with a houseman named "Block."
